Inside Jeanne Beker’s personal art collection: LaChapelle, Gaultier, Saint Laurent, and more!
Photography by David LaChapelle Jeanne Beker’s lifelong romance with fashion has been widely broadcast over the years, but did you know that she’s also an art lover? The Fashion Television host has been collecting contemporary art since 1980, beginning with her first painting from artist Marion Perlet. “Starting a collection seems daunting because it sounds like you’re making a commitment to a certain style or form or sensibility or type of work,” says Beker. “Art is all around us and exists in so many wonderful, different forms and at so many different price points.”
Beker was invited by the Art Gallery of Ontario to share several works from her diverse collection as part of the gallery’s Collector’s Series. FASHION got a one-on-one tour of her favourite pieces, along with some tips for would-be art aficionados. “Buy something that really speaks to you at the moment,” she advises. “And don’t ever buy anything just because you think it’s going to look good over your couch!”

Oscar de la Renta on life, love and his new fragrance
Photography by Jason Hudson For as long as I can remember, my mother’s vanity held curvy glass bottles of Oscar de la Renta’s namesake eau de toilette. The elegant black signature on the bottle stood out, and I remember asking her more than once, “Who is Oscar de la Renta? Two decades later at the Bay’s Queen Street flagship in Toronto, I finally got a chance to see the man himself, in town to promote Live in Love, his newest addition to the fragrance world. Accompanied by the Bay’s CEO Bonnie Brooks on his left arm and Fashion Television’s Jeanne Beker on his right (he’s always been popular with the ladies), the navy suit–clad de la Renta was the very picture of living in love.

TFW diary: Joeffer Caoc teaches us how to stay glam on and off the court
Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani Joeffer Caoc showed us how to stay glam on and off the court in his Spring 2012 collection. Despite the early afternoon start time, the fashion week veteran drew in high profile attendees including Jeanne Beker and our very own Bernadette Morra. Models marched down the runway like they were about to play a championship game—a champion in a much more chic uniform. Sportif looks included loose tanks and shorts with flashes of fuchsia, orange, and blue layered under breezy jackets and tunics, singlet-inspired column dresses, and gold lamé harem pants covered in black mesh. Aside from the occasional colour-blocked tote on the models’ arms, Caoc held back on accessories. (Who wants to lose an earring during a game?) Next time Caoc is hosting a game of pickup basketball, we hope we make the cut.

TFW style snaps: We spotted ombre, fur, and Amanda Laine outside LG Fashion Week
Photography by Lewis Mirrett Judging by the action outside the tents at LG Fashion Week yesterday, a few definitive trends have carried on from the international shows, namely candy coloured hair, brights, a bit of Pradarama, and the addition of a new and weather-appropriate one: fur!

Toronto fashion week street style snaps: Round 5
Photography by Lewis Mirrett This fashion week, the style on the street (or rather, red carpet) outside of the shows was at times even better than what was being shown on the runway. Especially when captured by the lens of our prodigal street photog, Lewis Mirrett. Here are the last shots of what was captured from the last day of shows. Our favourite? The inimitable Jeanne Beker in an embroidered Christopher Kane biker jacket.

Snow storms derailing clothing deliveries (including a Tom Ford suit stuck in London!), SAG Award stylists hoarding shoe samples and 2 model moms in tow, are all in a weekend’s work as we shoot supermodel Irina Lazareanu for our behind-the-scenes issue as a modern day fashion editor.

And speaking of Jeanne Beker, she says she’s only “scratched the surface” of things she still wants to accomplish. Expect two more books and a clothing line at The Bay in coming months. [Eye Weekly]
