• We match up Tom Ford’s latest scents with the men of A Single Man

After seeing Tom Ford’s spectacular directorial debut, A Single Man, my friend compared it to a two-hour long perfume commercial. She meant this as a compliment. The film contains characters of real dimension and weight, and sex appeal, which can also be said of the fragrances Ford himself has created. Ford had a hand in […]

  • Twihards join Degrassi kids, Fefe Dobson and Bella’s dad at the New Moon premiere

nov09newmoon8_lgTeam Edward and Team Jacob came out for premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon at Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre last night. The crowd ranged from tweens in kitten heels and crinolines (Suri Cruise in five years) to TwiMoms in satin and sequins. The accessory of the evening wasn’t sparkly jewels reminiscent of Edward’s sun-touched skin, but feathered headpieces that were more posh than goth. But back to the boys!

  • The September Issue will screen during Toronto Fashion Week!

FINALLY! Toronto documentary series Doc Soup will host the Canadian premiere of The September Issue on Wednesday, October 21–during Toronto’s LG Fashion Week. If you need reminding, the film follows Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington et al, as they put together the September 2007 issue of Vogue.

In the immortal words of Mick Jagger, “It’s only rock ’n’ roll but I like it!” There wasn’t much not to like about the award-winning documentary Rock Prophecies, which screened Saturday night at the Calgary International Film Festival. From director John Chester, this film explored the life of Robert Knight, an iconic rock photog who’s snapped everyone from Led Zepplin to Aussie band Sick Puppies.

After hearing the film’s wicked soundtrack, I was tempted to skip the after bash and head home to host my own personal party, complete with some long-shelved LPs, but I did my film fest duty and headed down to the Barley Mill for the bash.

  • Video: Grace Coddington vs. giant scarves in The September Issue

    aug09septemberissue

Two more clips from The September Issue are making the rounds. The premiere is tonight at the MoMA in New York, but it won’t make it to a theatre near (some of) you until October. The first clip shows some light Sienna Miller hair drama–the blonde bobbed wig they were using to cover her lank hair didn’t really work out, leading to the top knot that eventually made the shot. The second clip features Grace Coddington and her wild hair tending to Raquel Zimmermann, Coco Rocha and some gigantic knits. (Remember those big orange scarves from Giles?)

Enticingly brief clips after the jump.

  • The French New Wave spends July at Cinematheque Ontario

Jean Seberg in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless
Jean Seberg in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless

When Stuart Murdoch, the sad singing Scotsman best known for fronting Belle and Sebastian, met his wife, he left her Breathless.

Says the New York Times Magazine: “As a courtship present, Murdoch made her a replica of the New York Herald Tribune T-shirt Seberg wore in the opening shot of Breathless.”

Cute, right? But then: “‘I may have also done that for an earlier girlfriend,’ Murdoch admitted sheepishly.”

Ah yes. How appropriate. Like Murdoch’s women, all fashionable lovers of French New Wave know the delight of discovering a genre made exactly, exquisitely, for them—the super-chic haircuts, the striped shirts and plaid minis, the smoky-eyed (and forever smoking) gamines—only to realize they’re just the latest suckers for the lovely clichés of Parisian art-house cinema.

But don’t let that stop you from falling: this summer, the Cinematheque at the AGO is screening gorgeous pics by Godard and his precocious coterie of peers.
