Look again: Vintage fashion continues to influence runways and red carpets. We narrow down the most iconic pieces to invest in today

It’s a sunny Saturday morning in West Hollywood and Rita Ryack, the Oscar-nominated costume designer known for her work on Casino and A Beautiful Mind, is on a hunt for sequined dresses. Production on the film Rock of Ages is wrapping and she needs one more piece for Catherine Zeta-Jones’ character. Judging by the racks she’s browsing, which are filled with this season’s hottest labels and trends—Versace print T-shirts, heavily embellished Moschino jackets, sweeping red carpet–worthy gowns—you’d think she were shopping at an upscale department store. Think again. She’s at The Way We Wore, a vintage-clothing mecca that attracts A-list clients like Angelina Jolie, Dita Von Teese and Katy Perry. The shop is full of high-end designer pieces, like little black dresses from Chanel, elegant Christian Dior gowns, Pauline Trigère party dresses and Pucci pyjama pants, all dating from the 1930s to the early 1990s.

Going to see Mirror, Mirror this weekend? We have the scoop on the Van Cleef & Arpels tiara Lily Collins wears!
Images courtesy of Van Cleef & Arpels and Relativity Media Looks like Lily Collins is really worth her weight in gold! You might have spotted FASHION’s April cover girl wearing a gorgeous tiara in the trailer for Mirror, Mirror. Well, before you head to the theatres this weekend, here’s everything you need to know about the gilded piece: created by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1976, the headpiece features 144 diamonds set in platinum and white gold. All together, it totals 77.34 carats, or, in fairy tale terms, it works out to 11 carats per dwarf. That’s enough to make even Queen Elizabeth jealous!

Meet Lily Collins: Our April cover star discusses her breakout role as Snow White and gives us the lowdown on her spring wardrobe staples
Princess Diary
By Dennis HensleyLily Collins embarks on a thoroughly modern fairy tale with her first starring role,
as a sword-fighting, prince-saving Snow White. When Lily Collins arrived for her first costume fitting as Snow White on the Montreal set of Mirror Mirror, she assumed the most fabulous getups would go to her co-star Julia Roberts, who plays the evil queen. “I saw all these dramatic, colourful, amazing outfits and I thought, ‘Wow, Julia’s so lucky,’” says the 23-year-old British-born actress who’s best known for playing Sandra Bullock’s daughter in The Blind Side. “And then they started bringing them in, and I said, ‘Is this for me?’ The first outfit took 25 minutes to get into, and when I looked in the mirror I got teary-eyed.” Then there were the elaborate sets; she describes a giant indoor forest and 40 tons of salt for snow. “I was sprinting through this huge room of trees, in my ball gown, sword-fighting, going up cliffs,” she marvels. “When the crew brought their kids onto set, they would see me and start crying. They were like, ‘Blanche Neige!’”

Fan of The Hunger Games? Joe Fresh wants to send you to the Toronto premiere! Plus: enjoy this hilarious Lana Del Rey spoof video
Our enthusiasm for The Hunger Games movie (42 days and counting!) grew even deeper with the announcement of their China Glaze nail polish collaboration, and then reached full fandom status when Taylor Swift became part of the soundtrack. Thankfully, this new Lana Del Rey–inspired spoof song allows us to dial down our tween-age adoration to a more appropriate (ironic?) adult level.
But, before we sound too blasé about The Hunger Games, there’s yet another reason to get excited! Joe Fresh just announced that they’ve partnered with the film and are running a contest to send one lucky winner to the red-carpet premiere in Toronto—with a $500 Joe Fresh gift card. Continue over to torontolife.com for full details, or check out Joe Fresh on Facebook.

The first full trailer for The Hunger Games is here. Watch it now!
Edward who? The just-released full trailer for The Hunger Games has us totally forgetting about that other epic young adult obsession in theatres this week—can it please be March 23rd now? While the dystopian world of Katniss, Prim, Peeta, and Gale looks a little bit different than we imagined (the forest seems more Jurassic Park than post-apocalyptic) the action and emotion of the books is all there. Here are the other reasons we’re replaying it over and over:

Popcorn at the ready, we’re looking forward to a season of intriguing fare.
FALL FILMS
OUR IDIOT BROTHER
Paul Rudd as a cheerful stoner.
A grinning, bearded Paul Rudd—clad in baggy attire and Crocs—sweetly agrees to sell a little non-sanctioned herb to a despondent police officer in uniform while manning a farmer’s market stall. Promptly carted off to jail, he gets out early on good behaviour and returns to the fold of his three successful sisters—Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer and Elizabeth Banks—where family life proves to be entertainingly discordant. -
