SNP’s word of the day: Goz
Word: Goz
Meaning: Ryan Gosling. Did you actually just ask me that?
Usage: “Perhaps it was too obvious and People magazine decided they wanted to be edgy by not choosing the Almighty Goz, but the Internet is angry” — Toronto Life
You should know it because: The words we need to use the most—like please, like thanks, like you, like me, like like-—are all one-syllable’d. At this point I think we can all agree: Ryan “Hey Girl” Gosling needs to be one of those words. Hence, Goz.

SNP’s word of the day: Dude
Word: Dude
Meaning: Slang term for cool guy or cowboy, although meanings have shifted and accumulated over the years.
Usage: “I’m the Dude. So that’s what you call me. That, or His Dudeness… Duder… or El Duderino, if, you know, you’re not into the whole brevity thing.” ― The Dude, in The Big Lebowski

SNP’s TIFF word of the day: Meet-cute
Word: Meet-cute
Meaning: A romantic-comedy trope in which two future lovers meet in a wildly unlikely and thus totally fateful way.
Usage: “Oscar and Amy fall in love. And what a Meet Cute they have! On their first evening together, they go out for the evening, their taxi explodes (yes, explodes) and they run in the rain and wade in the mud and find a restaurant where they eat tuna melts that make them sick and they run outside and hurl. This is the Meet Cute as Meet Puke.” ― Roger Ebert in his review of Three to Tango, 1999.

TIFF 2011: We teach you how to create the drinks that the celebs have been sipping while hobnobbing at the Grey Goose Soho House
One of TIFF’s most guarded secret spots is the Grey Goose Soho House. Its location has been more or less kept hush-hush throughout the festival, and that’s why it’s probably been such a popular joint for celebs, including Ryan Gosling, Keira Knightley, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Olivia Wilde, and the list goes and on (and on).
For the first time we’d seen the venue during daylight hours, we stopped by on Saturday to check it out and chat with Grey Goose global brand ambassador Dimi Lezinska, the man in charge of creating Soho House’s cocktail menu. While all manner of good-looking stars come through Soho House, we could easily see patrons being more interested in catching Lezinska’s eye, and not because they needed to get a drink. The Frenchman is charming and handsome, which itself is the best cocktail. Lezinska has been with Grey Goose for six years and has created cocktails for soirees from the Oscars in Los Angeles to the Cannes Film Festival.
Lezinska created the menu for TIFF about three months in advance, and he says when planning he tries to incorporate flavours and ingredients that reflect the location of the event. Experimenting with all of these ingredients and creating signature cocktails sounds rather scientific, but Lezinska makes it sound like more than pouring the right mix: “It’s not a science—it’s an alchemy.” We think he’s struck gold.

TIFF partysphere: Ryan Gosling, Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård, Emily Blunt, Jon Hamm, and every star ever hit the Soho House again last night
Once again, the Grey Goose Soho House was home to just about every star you’d ever want to be home with last night, as the casts from Drive and A Dangerous Method celebrated their screenings. Who, pray tell, is all the hype about? Just Ryan Gosling, Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård, Emily Blunt, Bono, George Clooney, Jon Hamm, Evan Rachel Wood, Anna Faris, Dave Matthews, Sarah Sadon, David Cronenberg, Jimmy Kimmel, Kate Mara, Emile Hirsch, Albert Brooks, and Brian Cranston is all. Wish you were there? We’ll give you the next best thing…

TIFF partysphere: Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Evan Rachel Wood, and Mark Wahlberg were all hanging out together at the Soho House last night
Amongst the many (many) velvet ropes of TIFF, the ones that you’ll most want to get past are the ones guarding the Grey Goose Soho House. Held at an undisclosed location (we would tell you, but that would probably mean that they wouldn’t let us back), the ultra-private bar, with its specialty cocktails (more on that later), its mishmash of expensive-looking antique furniture, and its teeny-tiny DJ booth, is going to be home to some of the most exclusive parties of the week. Last night, the megawatt cast from Ides of March—ahem, Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman—and We Need to Talk About Kevin—ahem, Tilda Swinton—held court. Plus, Mark Wahlberg made drinks! Later, it was reported that Alexander Skarsgård was there, though until we see him with our own eyes, attempt to kidnap him, and then get arrested, we won’t be satisfied.

FASHION plates: Dress for TIFF 4 ways with help from these red carpet stars
We’ve given you the etiquette guide on how to snag the best seats in town, whether it be the steam room at Stillwater or beside Ryan Gosling (swoon!) at a Queen West watering hole, but now it’s time for us to show you how to really get his attention: by looking good, ladies. Taking our cue from some of TIFF’s most beautiful women, here are the four ways we’d most like to wow the industry (and boyishly good-looking) crowd.

Sarah Taylor’s FASHION + Music picks: David Bowie, Caribou and Dead Man’s Bones
David Bowie, Station to Station (Deluxe Edition)
It’s my personal opinion that David Bowie is an almost perfect musical creature. You might even consider him an otherwordly artistic genius whose four decades of music continues to influence pop culture and leave imprints on our creative souls. That’s why I’m happy to sneak him in here just before Halloween so you can rethink your Ziggy Stardust costume. Again. Incidentally, it’s also the perfect time to dust off your favorite Bowie albums, and maybe even add to the collection, since he recently released the 40th anniversary of Space Oddity, as well as a deluxe edition of 1976’s Station to Station that includes live versions of “Stay,” “Queen Bitch,” and “Fame,” all currently on repeat in my world. The original release of the album marked the introduction of Bowie’s alter ego, the Thin White Duke, who had a tendency towards aggressively apathetic romanticism, a love for Adolph Hitler, and a severe drug problem. The album feels like running through a dream towards a soulful love affair with your own ego. No matter how many delicious fame monsters follow, I still prefer the original. (Also look out for the War Child David Bowie tribute album that was released this week.) -
TIFF red carpet: Right this way for pictures of Ryan Gosling at the Blue Valentine premiere
Of the Ryans floating around at TIFF this year, the vastly superior one (in our humble opinion) is Ryan Gosling, who showed up last night for the Canadian premiere of Blue Valentine. Rumour was that he would skip it, so imagine the relief when he ambled, with his mom, across the red carpet and into […]
