Forget false lashes: At Chanel Couture Spring 2013 it’s all about fabric appliques on the eyes
See all the backstage pictures from Chanel Couture Spring 2013 »
Even from the front row it might have looked like elaborate eyeshadow, but models on the Chanel Couture Spring 2013 runway had their eyes decorated with custom fabric cut-outs. Made from the same fabric used in the headpieces, two different snowflake-shaped pieces were affixed around the outer corner of the eye to enhance the otherwise all-black makeup. The result is a fluttering, feathered look that’s so pretty we’re ready to start snipping out pieces of tulle for our own eyes. (After all, if you tried to duplicate this with makeup alone, smudges would certainly soon follow—making these appliques all the more genius!)
As for the non-arts and crafts portion of the beauty look at Chanel, Peter Philips began by prepping the skin with Hydra Beauty Serum.

Runway to Real Life: A lighter version of Rodarte’s starry blue eyes for Spring 2012
Find out how to get this look! »
Rodarte’s Spring 2012 collection had two magical muses: Van Gogh’s iconic work Starry Night and Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, and the opaque navy blue smoky eyes echoed the rich colours found in both. To balance the dramatic feel of the collection, Nars makeup artist James Kaliardos painted eyeshadow all the way up to the brow bone. While this certainly made a statement on the runway, it’s a bit too Maleficent-esque for day-to-day. With a few minor adjustments, however, this look is perfect for a night when you want to sparkle.

Having thoroughly fallen in love with their gemstone brows, it only took a day to find something else to obsess over from Chanel’s Fall 2012 beauty offerings. Are you ready? It’s “Frenzy,” a pale mushroom shade that’s due on counters this fall. Just when we were about to claim exhaustion over neutral nail polishes, the Chanel effect hits. Hard.

Afternoon beauty fix: Show off your love for bright colours without pulling a Katy Perry
I love Katy Perry’s blue hair but I could never pull it off amidst my real-life obligations. Is there a more accessible way to show off my love for bright colours?
I’m with you on adoring a splash of colour against a sea of typical shades—Kelly Osbourne‘s violet tint looks toned down compared to Katy’s, though it would still take an informed stylist and tons of work to maintain a bright dye job on your own. Candy-coloured hair started trending with the Thakoon Spring 2012 runway show and has caught on like wildfire with musicians and actors alike. -

Afternoon beauty fix: The most flattering way to wear the “no makeup” look
I don’t like to wear much makeup but it’s been hinted to me that I look tired. What can I wear to perk up my face without compromising my natural self?
“No makeup” makeup was a major trend on the Spring runways: Proenza Schouler, Chloé, and Burberry Prorsum all had it, to just name a few. A clean face is the most natural looking, though entirely nude isn’t necessarily the most flattering (or professional!) look for work or an evening out. We love the clean, dewy skin that makeup artist Pat McGrath created for Stella McCartney and it only takes three products to recreate. -
Rose does Joe Fresh! Michelle loves bright nails! Our 4 beauty picks from the Screen Actors Guild Awards
It seemed like many were playing it safe on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend. The dresses were pretty, but there was nothing overtly jaw-dropping, and in terms of beauty the trend seemed to lean towards keeping it simple. Dare we say that the stars (and their stylists!) are holding back until the Oscars? We’ll have to wait until February 26 to find out. But until then, here are four looks that managed to stand out:
Rose Byrne does Joe Fresh! »
Michelle Williams’ bright nails! »
Ashlee Simpson’s short and sculpted hair! »
Dianna Agron’s fishtail braid! »
