How to wear glitter: 3 Beauty Panel tips for making the look appropriate for daytime
When it comes to winter beauty, glitter is a must-have. Who can resist a little sparkle when the weather outside is so dark and gloomy? Glitter, glitter, glitter! A closer look at the makeup from Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2014
See more backstage photos from Chanel Couture Spring 2014 »
The return of glitter makeup is a beauty trend we’ve been eagerly anticipating. While it may never again be as ubiquitous as it was in the ’90s (thumbs up emoji for the scented glitter rollerball glory days of Claire’s Accessories) whenever glitter comes down a runway, it’s GAME ON for the tubs of iridescent goodies we’ve been secretly hoarding for years.
As such, cue the beauty look from this morning’s Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2014 show. It’s glitter makeup at its best: a perfect mix of translucent silver, opalescent and rainbow-tinted pieces. Paired with a heavy cat-eye liner (courtesy Ligne Graphique de Chanel in “Noir-Noir” and Le Crayon Khôl in “Clair”) this glitter look is very editorial and totally easy to emulate. Basically, it’s going to be on our faces in a matter of days and no one will think we’re going to a rave.

How to wear glitter without looking too over the top: 3 Beauty Panel tips and tricks
Sparkly ornamentation made its beauty mark this spring—courtesy Marchesa and Christian Dior—and there’s no doubt that glitter accents will continue to trend throughout fall. At the forefront of our favourite shimmering looks was the bedazzled statement look that Peter Philips created for Chanel. Whereas brows got all the glitter in 2012, for Fall 2013 Philips brought the focus back to the eyes, making them twinkle with silver sequined appliqués.
When it comes to duplicating the glitter look at home, it can be tricky to keep the look more runway glam and less like you’re going to a rave. While the Chanel look was impressive, the best bet for some DIY shimmer is to keep it subtle. To help advise, we turned to the Beauty Panel and asked them to show us how they incorporate a little bit of glitter into your beauty routine.

Nail Corner: Brighten up a cloudy winter day with this snow globe manicure
At some point this week it actually snowed in Toronto—huge fluffy flakes!—and the snow globe-like atmosphere instantly became Nail Corner inspiration. I’ve been dreaming of opaque white glitter for a few months now, but after going down a rabbit hole of searching for such a polish, it seems it’s a mix that’s nearly impossible to acquire. So nail art, paired with two of my all-time-favourite glitters, seemed like an appropriate substitute. (For now, that is!)

Afternoon beauty fix: How to wear glitter without looking like a tween
I’m not a ‘tween or even a teen. Is wearing glittery makeup totally out of the question? No! There are plenty of ways to wear sparkle without appearing too youthful or, ahem, tacky. A swipe of effervescent powder on upper cheekbones looks nice, and so does a sparkly eyeliner layered over-top your favourite matte black. […]

Q&A: Priscilla Queen of the Desert makeup artist gives us the lowdown on glitter
Last week, we had the unmitigated glittery delight of catching Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical (until January 2, mirvish.com), the story of three drag queens who set out across the Australian desert in the titular bus to do a gig at a casino in Alice Springs. The costumes, all 500 of them, were spectacular, and while it is certainly difficult to compete for attention with a dress made of flip-flops, the makeup–from glow-in-the-dark eyeshadow to glittery lipstick, was pretty great as well. To find out more about the production, we grilled lead makeup artist Justen Brosnan, whose credits include Broadway productions of The Drowsy Chaperone and Legally Blonde: The Musical, about the behind-the-scenes ballet and just how much glitter goes into the show.
