Quotable: Iris Apfel isn’t just some empty-headed fashionista
Iris Apfel is exactly what we want to be when we get older. She’s inspired everything from a M.A.C collection to a pair of Jimmy Choo pumps to a tattoo on the body of Alexis Bittar PR Director Samantha Shaw‘s body. But don’t get the sassy granny wrong, she has more than fashion on her […]

SNP’s word of the day: Iconoplast
Word: Iconoplast
Meaning: One who chooses to age naturally (or at least, who appears to age naturally).
Usage: “I love what Julianne Moore hasn’t done with her face; she’s such an iconoplast!”
You should know it because: Sometimes—or perhaps always, and I only sometimes notice—New York Times Magazine puts up neologisms for adoption. I love reading these, duh, although sometimes they should most definitely not be used as words. “Skinjecture,” for example, as in to speculate about who has had plastic surgery? Grossssss. “Iconoplast,” though, is great. It’s a hybrid of “iconoclast,” which in turn is taken from iconoclasm, and “plastic,” as in plastic surgery.

The fairest granny of them all: Get a load of the Iris Apfel collection for M.A.C!
Eccentric and perfectly over-embellished, the bold style of Iris Apfel is coming to M.A.C Cosmetics just a few days into the New Year. Full of bright and warm shades, the 20-piece collection includes vibrant nail polishes, lipsticks, and eyeshadows, as well as a beauty powder. The products take inspiration from Apfel’s standing as a “rare bird”—with names like “Robin’s Egg” (a matte teal eyeshadow), “Party Parrot” (bright-pink lipstick), and “Oriel Orange” (a Pantone-worthy orange nail polish) appearing throughout. NYFW style snaps: Tavi Gevinson and Advanced Style’s Ari Seth Cohen team up for a night of granny styles and something called “Eyelash Caberet!”
For those of you who’ve been reading us for a while, you’ll know that we’re obsessed with Advanced Style—the photo blog profiling stylish ladies aged 50 and over—as well its ever-dapper creator Ari Seth Cohen. When we heard that Cohen was teaming up with pint sized (well, not so pint sized anymore) über-blogger Tavi Gevinson for a one-night-only celebration of age and including something called “Eyelash Caberet” (!!!) during New York fashion week, we jumped at the chance to shoot the all the ladies in action. Well, the event certainly didn’t disappoint, as the Ace Hotel swelled with feathers, baubles, and of course old ladies shmoozing, performing, and generally lapping it up. Noted granny stylista Iris Apfel made an appearance in her signature black-rimmed glasses, and so did famed director Albert Maysles (as one part of the genius behind Grey Gardens, he knows a thing or two about eccentricity). The whole concept was plucked out of our fantasies, and is now brought to onscreen reality for you all by none other than our boy Lewis Mirrett.
