I’m looking to refresh a lot of the eyeshadows in my makeup bag. Any interesting items I should consider? (It might be worth noting that I have a dark complexion.)
Skin tones ranging from olive to ebony have no shortage of options to create flattering eye-makeup looks. Must-have tools for your kit include eyeshadow primers to even skin tone and manage oil production as the day wears on, coloured shadows with highly concentrated pigment, and gold-flecked champagne shades for highlighting.

Olivia Wilde cut quite a few inches off her hair during the holidays and debuted the new style—complete with ombré highlights—this weekend at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. It’s easy to see why the ombré trend is one that won’t go away anytime soon: done right, it’s always flattering. Wilde looks undoubtedly modern and fresh, and her caramel-coloured strands add another layer of dimension to her already glossy, textured hair. Eccentric and perfectly over-embellished, the bold style of Iris Apfel is coming to M.A.C Cosmetics just a few days into the New Year. Full of bright and warm shades, the 20-piece collection includes vibrant nail polishes, lipsticks, and eyeshadows, as well as a beauty powder. The products take inspiration from Apfel’s standing as a “rare bird”—with names like “Robin’s Egg” (a matte teal eyeshadow), “Party Parrot” (bright-pink lipstick), and “Oriel Orange” (a Pantone-worthy orange nail polish) appearing throughout. Daphne Guinness’ collection with M.A.C Cosmetics launches next week, but before you choose which pieces to add to your collection, she has a few tips about experimenting with makeup. Pantone has announced the colour of the year for 2012 and our future is looking bright. Tangerine Tango (that’s Pantone number 7625C for the designers out there) is a punchy mix of orange, coral, and red—making it an extremely versatile shade for all skin tones. And, considering that Sephora and Pantone are rumoured to be working on a Tangerine Tango–inspired makeup collection for March 2012, it’s a good thing this chosen colour is so multifaceted.

One last dispatch from Paris just arrived at our desk: a rundown of makeup used at the 2011 le Bal des Débutantes at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris. M.A.C Cosmetics was the exclusive makeup partner for the ball, and responsible for making the 23 debutantes look flawless. The main inspiration (seen here) shows a deep smoky eye, lots of lashes, and a youthful glow across the cheek—after all, most of the debs are still only 16!

We must be very used to seeing Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj in outlandish outfits on the red carpet, because we totally missed the fact that they had almost identical hair and makeup at the American Music Awards. (And pink hair is usually easy to spot!) While most people live by the beauty rule of wearing either a bold eye or bold lip, Perry and Minaj love making a statement with hits of bright colour on both. Thing is, when you’re an international pop star, it totally works.

But, for the rest of us, it’s a little harder to pull off the “heavy-handed cat eye and bright lips” combo. If you’re going to try it, do so when it’s event appropriate: meaning, not for dinner at your boyfriend’s parents’ house, or when you’re chatting up the boss at your office holiday party. Instead, break this style out when you’re going to be around Minaj and Perry types—that is, at a crazy concert or one of those parties that just seems to last all night long.
