Ann Taylor announces Canadian launch with two Toronto stores
It’s been a long time coming, but retailer Ann Taylor has announced that it will open two Toronto-based locations in time for fall. The stores—designed with the inspiration of the modern home—will stock classic wear-to-work pieces and elevated weekend wear (yet another reason yoga pants are an unacceptable Saturday uniform). Mothers and daughters alike will […]

They said/We said: Oh the scandal! Jackie O’s famous bloody Chanel suit was in fact not…Chanel!
Photography via Fashionista There are a few outfits that have had a lasting impact on society. Kate Middleton’s blue Issa engagement dress, for example. Marilyn Monroe’s white dress in The Seven Year Itch. Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl halftime show costume. Okay, maybe not that last one.
Amongst that iconic list, the pink bouclé suit Jackie Kennedy wore the day her husband, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated (she famously refused to take off the bloodstained jacket), stands out. In fact, it was so iconic that Carine Roitfeld told Tim Blanks it was the first Chanel piece she recognized: “The first Chanel jacket that I saw–that I knew was Chanel–was on TV. It was on Mrs. Kennedy–the pink one.”
Sorry, Carine, but it looks like you “knew” wrong. Karl Lagerfeld quickly countered, saying it was a line-by-line fake. Wait, Jackie Kennedy wore fake Chanel?!
Well… not exactly. While the Kaiser seems to think Oleg Cassini made the line-by-line copy, consensus is it was actually tailored at the Chez Ninon dress shop in New York. Apparently, the store had received the OK from Chanel to copy the dress and used Chanel fabrics, buttons and patterns to make it.
It appears Kennedy wore the “knockoff” (though with Chanel’s approval, it probably can’t be classified as one) suit to show patriotism and support American clothiers. And considering all the fuss that was made when Michelle Obama wore Alexander McQueen (not American) to the Chinese State Dinner, we think we can understand why she went in that direction.
Either way, the iconic suit will be locked away in a vault in Maryland until 2103. Chanel or not, this is one piece of fashion history we’d love to have seen.

They said/We said: The best tidbits from Karl’s Metro interview, including thoughts on M.I.A.’s middle finger and Michelle Obama
Photography by Peter Stigter If you were ever in doubt if Karl Lagerfeld had a verbal filter, his musings in Metro should clear things up. Acting as guest EIC, the designer took to the global newspaper to give his two cents (more like an entire change purse!) on various topics.
Amid the array of outrageous comments, the most shocking is calling Adele “a little too fat.” Lagerfeld has been known to weigh in on body size and has said before that those who criticized models for looking anorexic were fat “chip-eating, jealous mummies”—ironic coming from someone who’s no stranger to being heavy, having lost nearly 100 pounds in 2001.
Adele however, was not the only singer in his latest musings—Lana Del Rey also gets a mention. As well as the Greek economic crisis and Florence Welch, the designer had things to say regarding:

They said/We said: Michelle Obama and the Queen of Qatar spend $50,000 at Agent Provocateur
Michelle Obama may preach a budget-conscious wardrobe, but that must not apply to her skivvies; the first lady reportedly dropped a nonchalant $50,000 at lingerie shop extraordinaire Agent Provocateur.
We normally wouldn’t comment on anyone’s pre-Valentine’s Day prep (which must be why Mobama and Queen Sheikha Mozah took to Madison Ave—and partly closed it off due to their arrival—for their luxury lingerie shopping spree) but for someone whose husband is up for re-election in a time where budget issues are a vital factor, we say it’s probably not the smartest idea to spend on lingerie what most people spend on a car.
Agent Provocateur is certainly benefiting from the Mrs. O’s business; the Telegraph reports she was the reason the store increased 12 per cent in sales last year, which makes us think: could all this be a publicity stunt to garner attention for the store?
We’d like to think the first lady is smarter than this, and likely had a bit of help from Queen Mozah in racking up the huge bill (that is, if the spree actually happened). Either way we can’t help but wonder what the Prez had to say about all this. Actually, we’re pretty sure he won’t be complaining.

SNP’s word of the day: Blackgeoisie
Illustration by Lewis Mirrett Word: Blackgeoisie
Meaning: A “new” class of African Americans with money and “fashion power.” (Just typing this, I shuddered.)
Usage: “But if in 2012 the “black-geoisie” has integrated all the white codes, it does not [do so] literally. [There] is always a classic twist, with a bourgeois ethnic reference (a batik-printed turban/robe, a shell necklace, a ‘créole de rappeur’) that recalls the roots.” — a French Elle writer named Nathalie Dolivo in “Black Fashion Power”

SNP’s word of the day: Camarilla
Illustration by Lewis Mirrett Word: Camarilla
Meaning: A private, often secret, even sinister group of unelected advisors surrounding a leader or ruler; a cabal.
Usage: “SEKVIA’S DARK OUTLOOK; King Peter Dominated by the Military Camarilla. Prospects Are That Radicals Will Win at Approaching Election—King Peter May Then Leave the Country.” – a New York Times cablegram in 1903. (Sekvia, by the way, was in the Balkans… I think.)

Q&A: Michael Kors looks back at his 30-year career—the trends, the tears, and the trunk shows
Michael Kors Fall 2011. Photography by Peter Stigter. Michael Kors on celebrating his 30th anniversary, staying plugged in and becoming an adjective.
All-American. Spirited. Jetsetter. You can spot Michael Kors from a mile away. Over the course of his 30 years in the fashion industry, the man and the brand have become one and the same, morphing into a mega-empire that, as rumour has it, hit a billion dollars in sales this year. Not bad for a boy from Long Island, New York. Adored by Hollywood A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez, soccer moms and First Ladies alike (Michelle Obama wore Kors for her first official White House portrait), his rise to fashion royalty took off in 1981, when he launched his eponymous womenswear line.

Q&A: Kate Betts on the influence of (and her new book about) Michelle Obama
Cover shot by Sabrina Rossi Though spotting her in the front row is unlikely, you better bet that more than a few of those showing at New York fashion week are designing with a certain Mrs. O in mind. Michelle Obama is the definition of what a modern-day first lady should be: cool, confident and effortlessly-clad in hot American talents like Thakoon, Jason Wu and Narciso Rodriguez. In the new book documenting her style, Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style, in stores today, writer and former Harper’s Bazaar Editor-in-Chief, Kate Betts shines a light on the first lady’s lasting effect. We quizzed Betts on why she was so inclined to do Mobama justice.
