Rarely is there a time when an A-list star’s style does not get more refined with age. Sure, they have stylists to thank, but it’s still pretty amazing to see what a few years can do to a celebrity’s personal style. Goodbye “what was she thinking,” hello “why can’t I have her closet!” We may have already mentioned Nicole Richie’s cringe-worthy outfits, as well as Victoria Beckham‘s glorious matching ensembles with hubby David, but we decided to round up 13 more of our favourite celebrity style evolutions, from country princess-turned-glamour girl Taylor Swift to fashion icon Rihanna, because who doesn’t get a kick out of some good ole’ fashion throwbacks from time to time. Whether on the red carpet or the street, you can’t go wrong wearing black. This week it looks like celebrities everywhere proved just that. Continuing her best-dressed streak, Nicola Peltz looked babely as ever in a hot leather two-piece ensemble for the Rio de Janeiro premiere of the latest Transformers installment. While the young actress is no stranger to showing some skin lately, we were pleasantly surprised to see Kate Hudson join in on the trend. The actress attended a New York screening going borderline Goth wearing a black strapless gown (cut-outs and all), sleek-straight hair and deep plum lips, which hit the midriff-showing look out of the park.

The 2014 ESPY Awards (the Oscars of the sports world) took place this past Wednesday, where top celebrities sat side by side with the top athletes. And did we mention, Drake had the honour of hosting the event? Yep. While all eyes were on the superstar athletes, we were completely occupied by the standout outfits over on the red carpet. Once again, LBDs were the favoured look of the night (cases in point: Cameron Diaz and Iggy Azalea both rocked it!), but Jessica Alba who donned her second gold number in the past month, naturally stood out from the rest of the A-list stars.

A lot has happened since Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie burst onto the scene with their 2003 mega-hit reality show The Simple Life. Their chronic party girl ways (a leaked sex tape, multiple arrests, and some really questionable fashion choices) have been left in the past, but thanks to the Internet, their trashy early 2000s style will live on forever. In honour of the duo’s return to the spotlight—Richie’s reality show #CandidlyNicole and Hilton’s sparkly music career comeback with a pop video—we decided it was time to take a look back at the style metamorphosis of these reality TV veterans.

If we were to name our favourite kind of celebrity news, dramatic hair transformations would be high on that list. Though it comes as no surprise to hear that some of our fave celebs are changing up their looks for film roles (it’s in the job description, you know), we’d be lying if we said celebrity hair transformations don’t faze us from time to time. So whether the A-listers are going from long to short or from blonde to red, we’re all for it.

There’s no question short hair was a clear celebrity trend last year with Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway making the change from long to short. But judging from the latest celebrity hair transformations, this trend is here to stay. While Taylor Swift went for the drastic change earlier this year, chopping off her Rapunzel-like hair and opting for a bob style instead (possibly inspired by her IRL BFF Karlie Kloss?), the most recent (and surprising!) celeb to go short is Jennifer Aniston. Known for her wavy blonde hair, she shocked fans by debuting a sleek lob in a soft brown hue.

If reports about Anna Wintour wanting this year’s Met Gala to be more exclusive were true, they certainly did not apply to the A-list. Last night’s red carpet was stacked (and we mean stacked) with just about everyone from the recluse to rising star. Surely, it had something to do with the fact that last night was the inaugural Met Gala celebrating the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s renamed Anna Wintour Costume Center. Maybe too, it was just like the rest of us have been trained to understand: The Met Gala is not to be missed.

Honouring oft-forgotten American couturier Charles James, last night’s event was all about 1950s glamour. Its “white tie” guest-list prompted gents like Johnny Depp and Kanye West to wear tails, Zoe Saldana to wear a recreated Michael Kors bustle and both Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker to take to the stairs with over-the-top Oscar de la Renta trains. Unlike the sometimes cookie cutter Oscars, the Met Gala is a time to break out some real steez and red carpet queen Lupita Nyong’o did just that in a flapper-inspired feathered Prada dress. Perhaps more Poiret than James, the dress made for some serious chatter from both the “for” and “against” camps. Fellow red carpet queen (and queen of life, truly) Rihanna went anti-theme in a sexy stomach-baring Stella McCartney dress which killed, as usual.

Brightly coloured hair, don’t care! It took less than a day for Katy Perry’s new “slime green” dye job to make an appearance on the red carpet and we have to say… we’re pretty into it. Sure, the ends may look just a touch fried and if you squint you could easily mistake her hair for part of the background foliage, but her almost-neon style is pretty eye-catching and, well, flattering.

Perry was out with a few other notable names (Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie) to support California congressional candidate Marianne Williamson. Fun fact: Williamson, who is best known as the author of the Oprah-approved A Return to Love officiated Elizabeth Taylor’s last wedding, which was held at Neverland Ranch in 1991. Needless to say, Williamson has some pretty influential people in her rolodex, hence the star-studded press event.

Forget the paparazzi! When you’re a celebrity with thousands upon thousands of Twitter followers, a selfie is the best way to announce a new hair colour. Change is clearly in the air right now, as Nicole Richie, Demi Lovato and Kate Bosworth all debuted bright new looks this week. Subtlety doesn’t seem to exist in any of their vocabularies either, as all three stars have made a dramatic change to their hair colour.

Demi Lovato may be the least surprising of the bunch, as she’s rocked almost every hair colour you can imagine, from platinum blonde to raven black to navy blue. However, fans on Lovato’s Facebook page were freaking out yesterday when she posted a photo with the caption, “So…. This happened…… Oops. #NEONLIGHTSTOUR.” The photo showed an electric razor alongside a pile of pink hair and a snipped off ponytail, prompting speculation that the singer had gone mega short. However, Lovato soon uploaded a selfie debuting her new look, a side-shaved hairstyle alongside the cheeky caption “IDGAF”. Either Lovato was feeling that YOLO attitude or perhaps she took inspiration from Rihanna, who championed the side-shaved look while on her 777 world tour. Either way this feisty new haircut matches perfectly with the singer’s rock-star stage persona.

The fashion crowd was out in full force last night to celebrate Salvatore Ferragamo’s Spring 2013 runway collection at the iconic Chateau Marmont Hotel. Guests, which included Nicole Richie, Rachel Zoe, and Gia Coppola, were treated to an intimate presentation of the collection by creative director Massimilliano Giornetti, as well as a private dinner hosted by LA society fixture Jacqui Getty.

Oh, Rihanna! We were starting to get worried about her, but this look from Wednesday’s Battleship photocall has alleviated all concern. The singer—who has a starring role in the board game-turned-film—looked positively glowing with luminous skin and bouncy, blown out curls. While she’s been rocking this blond hair for the last few weeks, we have to admit that the intentional toupee-like crown of dark brown roots are (pardon the pun) growing on us. With the heavy fringe, she almost looks like Nicole Richie, no?

Last night, the stylish set filled the new TNT flagship at Toronto’s Hazelton Lanes in Yorkville to celebrate the store’s 20^th anniversary as well as to peep the brand new multileveled shopping emporium, which has expanded to 18,000 square feet. That means even more space for ultra-covetable merch from Helmut Lang, The Row, Theyskens’ Theory and more! Across the sprawling space, homegrown likes of Greta Constantine, Payne, and Camille and Laurence were all on hand to debut their newest collections and raise a glass (and a pretty penny) in honour of the Toronto Fashion Incubator.

While the soirée seemed to attract just about every designer, socialite and fashion personality around⎯even Dan Levy came home from LaLa land to make an appearance!⎯the real star of the night was deb-cum-designer Nicole Richie, who hit the town to promote her lines House of Harlow and Winter Kate. We snatched her away from legions of adoring fans to chat about all things style and asked if a Canadian collab could be in the works!
