Q&A: 5 minutes with Rozemerie Cuevas
Twenty-five years in fashion makes you a veteran, but RozeMerie Cuevas and her label, Jacqueline Conoir, are far from retirement. Case in point: Cuevas recently upsized her Jacqueline Conoir Boutique & Studio (164 W. Fifth Ave., Vancouver, 604-688-5222, jacquelineconoir.com) to an 8,000-square-foot space and launched a younger, edgier line, called JAC.
What type of girl did you have in mind when you were designing JAC?
“A cross between Kate Moss and Chloë Sevigny. She’s urban. She’s modern. She’s subtle. She has her finger on the pulse of things.” -

The red statement coat
Red rocked the fall runways—from Michael Kors’ long, lean jumpsuits to Victoria Beckham’s tailored coats. Fire up your autumn wardrobe with a dashing red topper, like this military-inspired jacket by Old Navy ($120, oldnavy.com). The double-breasted chill-chaser is an affordable way to tap into two key fall trends: the colour red and the statement coat. And should you want something a little more understated, it also comes in a rich camel colour.

Trunks show: St-Tropez makes a splash in Montreal
I love suit shopping (bathing suits, that is) and this season men’s swimwear is making a splash in Montreal. Finally, the St-Tropez brand Vilebrequin (vilebrequin.com) has opened its first Canadian shop at Ogilvy (1307 Ste-Catherine St. W., 514-842-7711, ogilvycanada.com). Known for its bright and quirky prints, this label’s fans include Prince William and Hollywood royals like Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise. Now, if only Vilebrequin would design swimwear for women.

Q&A: 5 minutes with J.Crew
Finally, our fashion prayers have been answered. J.Crew (jcrew.com), the famous American prepster palace, is opening its first Canadian store this month in the newly renovated Yorkdale Shopping Centre. (Can I get an amen?) Here, the ever-stylish Jenna Lyons, a.k.a. J.Crew’s president and executive creative director, talks fall must-haves and brand power.
Why did J.Crew decide to launch in Canada this year?
“We saw an increased level of traffic to our website from Canada. There was definitely a following [and] it was a natural progression. And fall is a great time to enter into a new country.” -

Male order: The return of the borrowed-from-the-boys look
Luckily for Calgary, Dani Izzo of Check Mate Shoes has opened an additional boutique, the Shoe Muse (326 Aspen Glen Landing SW, Suite 106, Calgary, 403-453-0490, theshoemuse.com). With the return of the borrowed-from-the-boys look this season, now’s the time to slip into a cool pair of oxfords or brogues.
