Ascending the ranks of typical two-year hair trend cycles, the ombre has proved perennial: it just keeps coming back. And although we can’t exactly pinpoint when and how the trend came to be (one too many missed trips to the hair salon could be a possibility), there is no doubt that many celebs have caught the ombre bug, including two of its earliest adopters, Jessica Alba and Nicole Richie. 

The classic ombre (think Sarah Jessica Parker) shows no signs of departing, but an edgy dark versus light a la Demi Lovato has become more and more popular in recent years. If standing out from the pack is your thing, Brit It girl, Poppy Delevingne works a reverse take on it that may be one of the best celebrity ombre hair looks we’ve seen. And then there is Kylie Jenner whose hairstyles may not be considered ombre per se, but the dip dye-like effect is definitely one chic version we know many fans will follow suit this season. What exactly is a toning shampoo and what is it used for?

What can I use on my hair to make it feel as though it’s never been coloured or heat-styled?
Hair that hasn’t felt the wrath of a flat iron, blow dryer or dye is usually a distant, fond memory, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Hair in its natural state—that is, unprocessed—has a lipid layer that exists shaft. This layer is comprised of 21 carbon molecules, which, when we begin heat-styling or colouring our hair, become heavily eroded. The result is hair that has less lipid protection than before, making it prone to damage, dryness and breakage. Certain hydrating hair products are useful in balancing our lipid layer molecule count, which drastically improves the texture of hair. Try a new hyper-hydrator for thirsty hair like Schwarzkopf Professional BC Moisture Kick Beauty Balm ($18, at salons). It contains hyaluronic acid, which has the same effect in hair as it does for skin: drawing moisture from the environment into hair to help replenish and hydrate.

Ah, white eyeliner! If you came of age in the mid-’90s, white eyeliner was basically the only makeup necessary.
