The real TIFF style star? The resort collections spotted all over the red carpet
During this year’s TIFF, the word we read almost as often as “red carpet” or “Martin Sheen” was “Resort,” as in resort collections. Indeed, no designer dominated the premieres and parties, but these collections certainly did, popping up on nearly every major red carpet. Our favourite was Carey Mulligan‘s celestial Christopher Kane dress, but Emma Stone (in Stella McCartney), Rebecca Hall and Jennifer Connelly (both in YSL) also chose looks from this “season” (can we call it that?). Freida Pinto wins for most resort-filled TIFF wardrobe, trotting out Alexander McQueen for the You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger premiere, an aqua Narciso Rodriguez for the presser and a fuchsia leopard-print Marchesa for the Miral party.

TIFF red carpet: Right this way for pictures of Ryan Gosling at the Blue Valentine premiere
Of the Ryans floating around at TIFF this year, the vastly superior one (in our humble opinion) is Ryan Gosling, who showed up last night for the Canadian premiere of Blue Valentine. Rumour was that he would skip it, so imagine the relief when he ambled, with his mom, across the red carpet and into […]

Life’s not fair: A guide to TIFF swag lounges and the celebrities who love them
What most elementary school teachers don’t teach their kids is that the word “gift” can also be a verb. To gift, or gifting is a major part of TIFF, where if you’re an A-lister (or even a B-lister) you’ll get spoiled and pampered just for being you. Brands want celebrities to be seen with their […]

TIFF poll: Do you like Malin Akerman’s dress?
Malin Akerman sported this shiny red J.Mendel gown to the premiere of The Bang Bang Club, in which she stars opposite Ryan Philippe. The colour is lovely, especially with all the variations in tone, but the whole things seems too stiff and shiny. Plus there’s something about the straps and the side panels that makes us think of the X-Men, which Akerman wasn’t in, but nevertheless, we can’t stop thinking about when we look at this dress.
You’ve heard our thoughts. What do you think?

TIFF red carpet: Jennifer Connelly wears a shorts tux to the premiere of What’s Wrong With Virginia
Just when we thought any semblance of glamour had gone out of TIFF, Jennifer Connelly swoops in in a sleek and cool YSL Resort 2011 tux. The actress attended the premiere of Dustin Lance Black‘s What’s Wrong With Virginia, where she plays the title role, and which also stars Ed Harris, Emma Roberts and cutie […]

Video: Little Miss Sunshine Abigal Breslin sings at Janie Jones party at Horseshoe Tavern
After trolling through the Yorkville and King West neighbourhoods, it was a delightful refresher to attend a party at a venue I actually enjoy. Last night at the Horseshoe Tavern, the folks from the film Janie Jones had themselves a little soiree, where cast member Abigail Breslin even got up on stage. -

TIFF gallery: Rachel Weisz, James Franco et al trade interviews for gift bags at Holts’ Variety Studio
While Holt Renfrew didn’t have their annual film festival bash this year, they did try something new with the Variety Studio. The in-store area, heavily blocked off from snooping shoppers, was a hub for talent to come in and get interviewed for Variety.com–and get a little something something to take home. The full complement of […]

TIFF poll: Who wore it best? Rachel Weisz and Rebecca Hall in duelling jumpsuits
We’ve got another hot battle on our hands today on Who Wore it Best?: Jumpsuit edition. Rebecca Hall is back for another round of judgment on her red YSL number, but this time we’re having her face off against Rachel Weisz, who wore a creamy vintage jumpsuit to last night’s premiere of The Whistleblower. Does Hall’s look (which, for the record, we liked–ignoring the somewhat ill-fitting bustier top) fare better here, or does Weisz’s stab at relaxed glam come out on top?

TIFF poll: Natalie Portman in Jason Wu. Good, bad or blah?
With apologies to Jason Wu, I think we’re all a little disappointed that Natalie Portman didn’t bust out the Rodarte for the Black Swan premiere. (Though, as our friends at Toronto Life have pointed out, this hasn’t been an exciting fest, style wise.) But let’s collect ourselves and consider the frock at hand. Do you like it?

TIFF red carpet: Nicole Kidman disappoints in Prada at the Rabbit Hole premiere
Nicole Kidman went decidedly low-key for the premiere of John Cameron Mitchell‘s Rabbit Hole. Kidman, in a midnight blue Prada dress, was joined by husband Keith Urban and co-stars Aaron Eckhart, Jon Tenney and a newcomer Miles Teller. The colour looks great on Kidman, but the whole look is a bit shapeless and–do our eyes […]
