FASHION plates: Let’s play ball!
By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter
Nothing says summer quite like that first day spent at the ballgame: sun on your face, cheering fans, popcorn and hot dogs with all the fixings! This summer, we’ll be carrying that carefree feeling off the field with collegiate chic baseball bombers, classic baseball tees, vintage caps and a whole lot of red and white. We’ll also be wishing we were Geena Davis and/or Madonna in A League of Our Own.

Patrick Robinson is out at Gap… but why?
We’re barely halfway into 2011 and the fashion world has already seen our fair share of industry shake-ups: the Galliano scandal, Carine Roitfeld’s exit at Vogue Paris, Christophe Decarnin’s mysterious mental illness/ousting at Balmain, and now Patrick Robinson has been booted from the Gap.
While most of the recent switch ups seem to make sense⎯Galliano’s anti-Semitic outburst couldn’t very well go un-reprehended and Decarnin’s health issues were clearly in need of medical attention⎯we found ourselves puzzled upon hearing the news that Robinson had been presented with a pink slip due to lackluster sales in the first quarter of this year. We’ve seen many a powerhouse figure reinstate retail dinosaurs (Bonnie Brooks at The Bay , Jenna Lyons at J.Crew), so why not Robinson at the Gap?

TFW diary: Go big or go home at Lucian Matis
At the Lucian Matis show on Wednesday evening, the first word that came to mind was big: big shoulders, big knits, big hair, big embellishments. And yes, there was even a big marquee sign that spelled out “Lucian Matis” in bright lights, should you happen to forget where you were. Held off-site at the Design Exchange in Toronto’s financial district, the show continued in the vein of Matis’s signature ornate style. Black bodysuits with oversized shoulders and exquisite bronze beading held their own against bulbous chunky knit sweaters. Stunning beading adorned Balmain-style, pointy-shouldered blazers and bedazzled the derrières of a few onesies. Matis’s streamlined gowns stole the show, including one with a floor-length skirt covered in ombré tassels, as well as a gold teacup dress with black beaded shoulders. While the collection was at once exquisite, extravagant and elegant, its saturated looks could have used a bit more of one thing: editing.

PFW diary: Feminine wrappings at Calla, Nina Ricci and Roland Mouret
Where to begin. Last night, I took in a presentation by the lovely Canadian expat Calla Haynes, who loves to play with watery abstract prints in soft shapes. The models lined up before a row of potted flowers, then Haynes bashfully stepped in among them to take her bow.

PFW diary: A beautiful balance at Balenciaga
Woke up with a smile knowing I had a Balenciaga ticket in hand! After a gulping a cappuccino, I dashed down the Rue de Rivoli to the Hotel Crillon where paparazzi lined the entrance waiting for fashion photo ops. It doesn’t matter how dressed I get for these things, there will always be someone better. This morning, it was a woman in a red Balmain studded moto jacket who got those cameras snapping.
