Exploring the magic of a Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola collaboration at the Daisy Dream launch
When Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola take the stage at the launch for his fragrance Daisy Dream (from $85, Hudson’s Bay) at New York’s Dia Center for the Arts, you want to study them the way a zoologist watches animals in their natural habitat. You’re compelled to scrutinize not only their behaviour but what they’re wearing—she’s in slim, cropped black pants, a coral sweater (both by the designer himself) and black ballet flats, while he’s in a suit paired with dingy Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. Being in such close proximity makes the impenetrable sphere of cool that surrounds them all the more apparent; you fantasize about what their conversations must be about, what clothes he designs with her in mind and whether they share current iPod playlists.
They’ve been friends since the early ’90s, and Jacobs has enlisted Coppola over the years for various projects, from modelling in the ad for his very first fragrance to advising on shoes and bags for Louis Vuitton. He tapped her once again for directorial duties on the TV commercial for Daisy Dream, and it sounds like it was an effortless task. “We have similar tastes in music and photography, so I felt like I knew how to approach it,” says Coppola. “How Marc sees women is something I identify with.” As a feature film director, she embraced the opportunity to not have to deal with dialogue. “I think in the way that a fragrance is sort of abstract, I liked not having to tell a story, but more a mood or an atmosphere.”

Peak peformance: View our stunning November issue fashion shoot photographed on location at the historic Bruce Trail
These boots may not be made for trekking. But we couldn’t resist pitting fall’s mighty coats, knits and leathers against the 420-million-year-old dolostone of the Bruce Trail, which turns 50 this year. Timely designs against a timeless backdrop. Happy anniversary to us all.

Watch the Bruce Trail fashion film »Rugged and rocky Canadian terrain may not be an ideal setting when combined with fall temperatures. But when paired with the latest Fall 2012 trends, the trek seems to look a lot more attractive. We put the best of fall’s coats, leather and knitwear to the test against the beautiful backdrop of the Bruce Trail, who like us here at FASHION are celebrating a big anniversary this year (they turn 50, we just turned 35). By layering modern pieces from the likes of Balenciaga, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, it made for a stark contrast against the 420-million-year-old dolostone that makes up Canada’s longest footpath. So while the boots in this shoot may not be made for hiking, the clothes sure fit beautifully against the timeless backdrop of the Bruce Trail.

We go behind the scenes with the National Ballet dancers as they rehearse for Chroma
Chroma, the mind-blowingly different ballet, is back for the National Ballet of Canada’s summer season and we seriously can’t get enough. We just don’t know quite how to describe how fantastic the ballet is, but we’ll just say this: The White Stripes are used on the soundtrack. Also, the amount of undulating body rolls and hip juts throughout the set are far too many to count. To capture some of the ballet’s uniqueness, we sent Lewis Mirrett to shoot the dancers as they rehearsed for the showing.

Behind-the-scenes at Eva Michon and Calla Haynes’ apocalyptical fashion film shoot
View the film »
Go behind the scenes »Welcome to the set of our first fashion film, the apocalyptical Welcome End, by director Eva Michon. Starring the Spring 2012 collection by Calla Haynes, the film is the stylish telling of what might be the last day on earth. And what better place to prep for the end of the world than a North Toronto mansion complete with marble fireplace, glass tabletops, and a cavernous book-filled library?
Lewis Mirrett was on set to capture all the action, from Fashion Television’s visit, to model Devon Owens hissing at a porcelain cat.
