TFW backstage beauty: Slick hair, soft shadows and tarnished nails at Jeremy Laing

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Clean, simple and slightly androgynous was the idea for hair and makeup at Jeremy Laing. “It’s masculine, but with feminine tones to contrast the gender-bender look,” explained CoverGirl makeup pro Greg Wencel. Eyebrows were defined with a brow pencil, but the desired effect was for a full, soft brow—not a harsh or bold statement. Eyes were equally soft, with a light wash of CoverGirl Intense ShadowBlast in “Beige Blaze” and a dusting of warm eyeshadow on top. In a very Downton Abbey sort of move, no mascara was applied—this further impressed the idea of a masculine, androgynous look.

TFW backstage beauty: Pompadours and ombré lips at Jean-Pierre Braganza

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »One of the biggest challenges with The ShOws is the beauty: because the designers have already presented their Fall 2012 collections elsewhere, hair and makeup has to take inspiration from what was previously done. However, there’s always room for adaptations and change—which was certainly the case at Jean-Pierre Braganza’s show. “He wanted a smaller version of the hair,” explained Justin German, Pantene’s consulting stylist of the loose pompadour style. “There was trouble getting the clothes on over the hair in London!”

They said/We said: Ellen DeGeneres is the new JC Penney spokesperson and a Christian conservative group is not happy about it
Conservative group One Million Moms has a bone to pick with JC Penney and its decision to hire Ellen DeGeneres as the department store’s spokesperson.
The disapproving anti-gay group writes on their website, “Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families” and goes on to claim “DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store.”
However not everyone on the group’s Facebook page seems as troubled by JC Penney’s decision. Comments in support of DeGeneres include: “Being gay is only a part of who she is […] she is modest in her dress and behaviour.”

They said/We said: Taylor Swift’s Cover Girl ad got banned, but it may not be for what you think
Taylor Swift is known for her knockout red carpet beauty looks, but today her work for Cover Girl’s Nature Luxe Mousse Mascara is coming under fire for the not-so-natural lashes in the ad’s photo. The National Advertising Division in the U.S. has banned the ad for excessive photoshopping and noted the disclaimer at the bottom of the ad that states Swift’s lashes are “enhanced in post production.” The ban was also based on the ad’s superior performance claims, which claim the mascara will give your lashes “2x more volume” and is “20 per cent lighter” than other mascaras.

Afternoon beauty fix: A little blush will make your bronzer last all winter long
I feel like my face looks too fair and round without bronzer, but I heard it’s a faux pas to wear in the winter. What shade of blush should I wear instead? The faux pas that you’re referring to is true… sort of. There are certain types of bronzer that are suitable for summer tans—they’re […]

View the runway video »Soft and romantic, the look at Calla Haynes was a modern approach to ‘60s beauty—and if that brings to mind visions of fresh faces and at-home hot rollers, you’re on the right track. For hair, Justin German, Pantene’s consulting stylist, created two different versions of a rough half-updo, with a textured bump—“For lack of a better word,” he noted—on top and loose, brushed-out curls at the back. German pointed out that the finished look included visible bobby pins to make the hair look “almost like you did it yourself.”

Afternoon beauty fix: How to prime skin for smooth application (buh bye creases!)
Foundation tends to crack over my dry skin, especially if it’s loose powder or matte. Is there anything that can help smooth it over before I apply the second layer? Use a light exfoliant on your skin twice per week and hydrate morning and evening with an oil or a collagen-rich moisturizer. After prepping skin […]

FASHION plates: Gone tribal
By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter
The seemingly never-ending delay to summer has us day dreaming of a getaway to the most exotically out-of-the-way locales. We want to feel the warmth of the scorching sun on our spf’d faces and feel the rains down in Africa, we want to show off our bronzed bods in electric brights and the boldest of graphic prints, and dance to the rhythm of a tribal beat. Alas, an across the world sojourn is not in our future, but while we wait for summer to show, there’s no stopping us from going global when it comes to retail therapy.

Runway beauty: The mastery of Pat McGrath
During one of our first interviews with runway makeup artist Pat McGrath, we asked her was what book she was reading for pleasure. “Nothing at the moment,” she quickly responded, “I don’t have time.” We believe it: aside from her duties as CoverGirl’s Global Creative Director, everyone wants a piece of Pat, including all the top designers who enlist her season after season to create looks that complement their collections. And, because McGrath is the mastermind backstage at countless shows, almost every beauty trend can be traced back to her. Here are some of our favourite McGrath-made looks and the trends they inspired for Spring 2011.
