When to Save and When to Splurge on Beauty Products (According to Industry Insiders)
It seems like the days of a three-step skincare routine and/or a vanity made up of just a handful of products are behind us, which can mean one thing: larger numbers on our credit card bills. With different products to cleanse, treat and moisturize (and tone and hydrate and…see what we mean?), and a long list […]

Why long-wear makeup will always be the holy grail of cosmetics
When Bobbi Brown wanted to illustrate the tenacity of her long-wear eye makeup, in a recent ad campaign, she had a champion skydiver drop out of a helicopter and sent a pro surfer crashing into an ocean’s waves—both wearing the product. While most of us won’t be swimming with sharks anytime soon, the experiment shows […]

Dorm beauty: 5 products to make back-to-school season way easier
Maybe your floor’s one and only bathroom is already packed with the 11 other girls you share it with. Or maybe, you woke up extra late for class due to last night’s vigorous flip cup game study sesh. No matter the reason, a lengthy beauty routine isn’t something that’s easily doable for the disorderly days (erm, […]

We went inside the CoverGirl lipstick lab to see how makeup moves from conveyor belt to counter
When CoverGirl debuted its first lipstick line in 1964, it featured shades like “Pure Scarlet,” which seemed made for Mad Men types, while pinks were a hat tip to the Carnaby Street crowd. Of course, those hues were jettisoned long ago. CoverGirl constantly assesses its lipstick portfolio to determine when it’s time for a reboot. […]

Ever wanted to go through a celeb’s makeup bag? We spoke to Lights about her signature look, beauty routine & more
“I don’t do anything the way it’s supposed to be done.” I’ve barely sat down before Lights warns me that her approach to makeup is just a whole lot of trial and error, plus a sprinkling of YOLO. Luckily, that’s exactly what I like to hear before rummaging through someone’s makeup bag. I’m sitting with the 27-year-old […]

I’m looking for a new beauty look this season. What’s the eye makeup trend to try this summer?
While summer can be a minimal makeup moment for many, it’s also a great opportunity to experiment with summer makeup trends. The sun is shining, so seize the moment and inject some colour into your look. If bright shades are a bit bold for your taste, pastels offer a dose of colour without overwhelming any particular feature of your face. Add the Bobbi Brown Surf Palette ($75, at Bobbi Brown counters) to your arsenal for a mélange of different textures and finishes to play with, such as soft aqua blue, green and shimmery pink shades, complemented by warm-toned neutral shades to ground any look from becoming too Easter-inspired. -
Sport meets city with ’90s-inspired waves for Bellavance’s Spring 2014 beauty look
Last night at The Shows in Toronto, the backstage was bustling as Covergirl makeup pro Amélie Ducharme and Pantene Pro-V consulting stylist Justin German created a look for Bellavance’s Spring 2014 collection described by Ducharme as sport meets city. Dewy skin was achieved using Covergirl Clean Liquid Makeup Sensitive Skin ($8, well.ca), while apples of the cheeks were given a sporty flush using Covergirl Cheekers Bronzer in “Copper Radiance” ($7, well.ca). Eyes were swept with shimmery orange and white shadows along both the upper and lower lash lines. Covergirl Smoky ShadowBlast in “Citrus Flair” ($9, at drugstores) was used on the outer half while Covergirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in “Blazing White” ($5, well.ca) lit up the inner half of the eye. This contrast in colour, as well as the bare bottom lashes, were intended to make eyes appear large and round, explained Ducharme. The final step was a neutral, soft pink lip created with a light coat of Covergirl Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm in “Be Sweet” ($6, well.ca).

What’s in your bag, Katie Boland?
See what’s inside Katie Boland’s bag »
Katie Boland ranks high on our list of young Canadians worth keeping an eye on. In the past few years the Toronto-based actress had made waves with notable roles including one alongside Kat Dennings in the 2010 flick Daydream Nation and in her own web series Long Story, Short (which she wrote and co-produced, by the way). The striking brunette, who has much to be excited about with a role on the new CW series Reign, stopped by our offices to give us an uncensored look at what she carries in her everyday bag. A self-professed iPhone addict, who admits she can’t live without eyeliner and is constantly on the hunt for the perfect red lipstick, is refreshingly down to earth and surprisingly low-maintenance (lipstick, Visa and phone is all that she brings with her to red carpet events). We got up close and personal with Boland’s must-have items as she let us peruse through her purse.

Runway to Real Life: Try colour blocking your makeup! Here’s how to do Marni’s playful Spring 2012 look
Marni’s Spring 2012 collection was suspended between girlish youth and confident womanhood. Although the ‘60s chic looks were structured and clean, little hints of whimsy appeared throughout. It was the collection’s playful accessories—two-toned oxfords and clutches—that inspired makeup artist Tom Pecheux to create the orange and white beauty look. By using shadows instead of liners, and by perking up the cheeks and lips with sheer products, you can make this work for real life. The bright, light colours are what make this look youthful and fun, so don’t be shy about using these creamsicle hues.

Runway to Real Life: Easy tips to help you master Moschino’s smoky eye makeup!
Inspired by Spain’s rich cultural traditions and mythologies, Moschino’s Spring 2012 collection definitely brought the drama. Models sashayed with toreador swagger, wearing ruffled dresses, jingling gold bells and even donning bullfighter hats. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux dreamed up a look that was a tribute to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, anchored by a strong brow, dramatic smoky eyes and contoured cheeks. The smudginess of the eyes had a painterly quality that was a perfect accompaniment to the vivid collection.
Since the classic black smoky eye is essentially the makeup equivalent of a little black dress, this is a great and wearable look for any special event. We’ll share some tips and tricks for creating a Moschino-worthy version that will stay put all night long.

Runway to Real Life: How to do the almost-fluorescent-pink eyes, lips and cheeks from Viktor & Rolf Spring 2012
Find out how to get this look! »
The ultra-girly “modern doll” look in Viktor & Rolf’s Spring 2012 collection was an unabashed celebration of sweetness and fun. Even better, the bright hues used throughout the collection were echoed in the beauty with fluttering fuchsia lashes and berry-stained lips. To make this look more appropriate for a day not spent on the runway, I created a slightly subdued but equally adorable and fanciful face. The eyes, cheeks and lips all used the same palette of bright, confectionary-appropriate pinks but without the theatrical embellishments of paper cateye cutouts and almost-neon lashes. That being said, it was impossible to resist the allure of a pair of bright pink falsies—which I added as a bonus at the end. Consider this: start the night off with the more subdued look, then pop on some pink lashes as you head out the door to a fabulous party.

Runway to Real Life: How to do Preen’s peachy-perfect Spring 2012 makeup
Find out how to get this look! »
When Preen‘s Spring 2012 collection was still in its nascent stage, designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi were reading a lot of Virginia Woolf, and Victorian era visions of English gardens danced in their heads. The collection featured prints in lush, pastel colours based on blown-up, pixelated peonies. Fittingly, the models faces were flower-petal fresh, their cheeks as rosy as ripe peaches.
