Red carpet round-up: Plenty of quirk and black dresses at the British Fashion Awards
The British Fashion Awards were handed out last night at the Savoy in London. (Check out the winners here.) The red carpet scene was one of the more enjoyable we’ve seen in a while–even the sea of black dresses gave us something interesting. Standouts were Alexa Chung, who paired prim Chanel with a biker jacket, and Lara Stone doing her best Diane Kruger in a minimalist Calvin Klein sheath. According to Chanel fashion president Bruno Pavlovsky, haute couture is making its triumphant return after the recession. “We have new clients from Europe and the Middle East,” he says. “Today, we feel a new interest in haute couture.”[WWD]

Daphne Guinness is the new face of Akris’ spring campaign. The off-the-wall fashionista will officially be tied to the new handbag collection launching in February. Alexander Wang was presented with the Swiss Textile Award and a $147,000 grand prize last night. Last year’s winner, the Rodarte sisters, presented the award while commenting on the significant difference it made for their business in the past year. Among the runners-up were Erdem and Thakoon.
