FASHION plates: Marilyn Monroe
By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter
Are you sick of putting aside your blonde ambitions? Have no fear. You can finally scratch that Seven Year Itch. Jewels, the new exhibit of Bert Stern’s iconic images of ’60s icons, including Marilyn Monroe in the last images ever taken of her, just opened in Toronto and has the icon firmly planted in our minds. Why not catch the exhibit (on until July 9, at IZZY GALLERY, 106 Yorkville Avenue, 416-922-1666) while channeling the screen star in some of the pieces we’ve spotted!

Katy vs. Selena: Who wore it better?
Selena Gomez shot by George Pimentel/Getty Images By Allyssia Alleyne
Last night co-host and performer Selena Gomez brought out the heavy embroidery during the MMVAs, wearing the same blinged-out dress Katy Perry wears on our Summer cover. The jewel-encrusted Dolce & Gabbana mini combines three of summer’s hottest trends: lace, white and lots of leg. And so, the fashion battle begins!
Our favourite California girl made the dress fun and sexy, pairing it with colourful rings, purple polish and a pop of fuchsia lipstick.
In the other corner, Selena’s subdued makeup, messy updo and subtle dangling earrings make the risqué hemline seem downright wholesome. Not that it’s a bad thing. We like our 18-year-olds looking, you know, 18.

MFW diary: Milan at its best at Dolce & Gabbana, Aquilano Rimondi, Versus and Salvatore Ferragamo
Dolce Gabbana shot by Keystone Press Dolce & Gabbana is about to begin. This is one show I never mind waiting for. And why would I? The seats in the Metropol theatre are cushy-comfy and actually have backs (YES!) There’s plenty to keep you entertained⎯from the waiter plying you with pizza and red wine at your seat, to the video scenes of backstage primping, people arriving, and front-row eds gossiping in their seats that is looped and playing overhead. Any moment, the theatre will go dark and like clockwork, my favourite, “Cavalleria Rusticana” will swell on the sound system and, from what I can see from the backstage video, fall will be another colossal hit for this dynamic duo. So far, from the monitor above me, I spy enormous star earrings, lace, and glitter galore! Sequins mix with fur and there’s a gender-bending mix of masculine/feminine… feels like classic Dolce to me!

Dispatch from Milan: A lacy affair at Dolce & Gabbana, plus schoolgirls at Versus, short-sleeve dresses and more
DOLCE & GABBANA Spring 2011. Photography by Peter Stigter Yank your grandma’s white linen tablecloths off the table! If Dolce & Gabbana have their way, spring will be a lacy white affair with doilies, curtains and table linens doing double duty as pretty, feminine dresses, bloomers, corsets, lady suits and babydolls. The dynamic duo did their favorite silhouettes all in “bianco” lace, embroidery and broderie anglaise. With only a few soft floral prints, a smidge of black lace and some signature leopard prints thrown in the mix, the collection was almost singularly one note–and a clean, fresh and a fabulously feminine, one at that.
