What’s in your bag, Jay Manuel?
When we heard Jay Manuel was in town promoting his raved-about makeup line, available on The Shopping Channel, we couldn’t wait to catch up with him. After 18 seasons of America’s Next Top Model, Jay Manuel shed his role as coach to model hopefuls and started focusing more on his own vision for what women’s beauty should […]

They said/We said: In one fell swoop, ANTM says goodbye to J. Alexander, Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker
Longtime America’s Next Top Model cast members J. Alexander, Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker were handed some Tyra mail yesterday, but not the kind that’ll whisk them off to a thrilling international locale. Rather, the runway coach, mentor and photographer (sorry, noted fashion photographer!) were given the axe: their contracts will not be renewed for season 19.

They said/We said: Industry fans react to the end of Fashion Television
Say it isn’t so! As we reported yesterday, the fashion world was hit with a major disappointment with the announcement that after 27 fabulous years on air, Fashion Television has stopped production. This end of an era certainly had us thinking “what happened?!” While FT had always been known for bringing insider access to the masses, it seems that the industry invasion of bloggers and runway live streaming has resulted in poor ratings as of late.
While Fashion Television certainly blazed the trail for leading fashion news and introduced many of us to the industry while giving us rare insights into the surreal worlds of Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld and the like, the show has suffered a viewership plunge in its last years. Scarce one-on-one interviews are a things of the past with greater access to designers (most fashion houses produce their own branded media content).
What does this all mean? The Globe and Mail writes “spending tens of thousands of dollars on travel is no longer considered a smart investment when access to designers and tastemakers […]”
The world may have changed since FT first aired in 1985, and the show’s end may seem inevitable, but we’re certainly going to miss seeing Beker’s trademark quirky charm and can’t wait to see what she what future endeavor she has up her stylish sleeve. And according to Bell Media, we do not have too long to wait: “Bell Media remains committed to the fashion genre & will continue to grow FTC to deliver a broader appeal for viewers & advertisers. Jeanne Beker remains with Bell Media & we look forward to new projects with her.

America’s Next Top Model hits Toronto Fashion Week!
Apparently, we were sleeping for a few days last Toronto Fashion Week, because America’s Next Top Model came and went without us even blinking an eye! Last October, the model competition brought their contestants to the tents to strike a pose at a few of the shows, including Jay Manuel (natch), Joe Fresh, Pink Tartan […]

TFW diary: One stellar spring collection and a model tumble at Attitude Jay Manuel
View the runway photo gallery »
DIY: We teach you how to tie a turban, Jay Manuel style »
View the runway video »The intense dry-ice spectacle at last night’s Attitude Jay Manuel show may have blurred the sight of some, case in point, the gorgeous Yasmin Warsame’s disoriented runway tumble, but Jay Manuel’s vision for his collection is crystal clear. For spring, it’s all about jet-setting ‘70s style. After a 30-minute delay, the antsy crowd settled their sights on the Missoni-inspired runway, to a parade of slick jersey jumpsuits, off-the-shoulder open knits, breezy cotton tunics and brightly coloured Palm Springs prints. On my personal can’t-live-without list is the chic two-tone denim trench. A shout-out must be given to our go-to guy, George Antonopoulos, for an amazing job styling—the headscarves, raffia fedoras, and oversized sunnies secured a care-free cool factor and added the perfect finishing touch.

TFW diary: Holt Renfrew opens LG fashion week with 56 looks of Canadian-made cool
Holt Renfrew kicked off LG Fashion Week with a noisy, crowded bang last night—editors and buyers (and a one Mr. Jay Manuel) got to know each other really, really well, all squished in together on benches in the tents at David Pecaut Square. As is their wont, Holts sent out micro collections from eight of their Canadian best—for whom the question of whether their collections will actually make it to stores has already been settled. The best bits, in order…

They said/We said: Kelly Cutrone will replace Andre Teon Talley on America’s Next Top Model. Cue the waterworks!
Looks like Tyra’s gaining another female perspective. It was announced this morning that Kelly Cutrone will replace Andre Leon Talley as the fourth America’s Next Top Model judge next season. Known for her intense attitude (and that’s putting it mildly) on The Hills and The City, the founder of now-famed PR firm People’s Revolution will no doubt up the drama ante on the panel.
As for the rumours that a tiff with Banks is the reason for Talley’s departure, he dismissed them, telling Page Six “It’s all good in the neighborhood.” (Oh, okay.) Although we’re sad to see Talley’s high-fashion credibility go, Cutrone’s blunt and quote-worthy advice is sure to bring some entertaining moments. Cue the waterworks.

Jay Manuel showed some Attitude yesterday in Toronto. View the photos!
Jay Manuel, the silver-haired and Toronto-raised fashion personality best known by his roles on America’s and Canada’s Next Top Model was in his hometown yesterday to launch his much-anticipated line, Attitude Jay Manuel, at Sears Eaton Centre. The die hard–fan-filled runway style presentation attracted gawkers and passers-by alike, who—if they didn’t know before—definitely were clued into Manuel’s celebrity status by the 40-foot poster that hung in the entrance to the mall.

TFW diary: Jay equals cachet at ATTITUDE
A few days ago, as my alarm-radio clicked on, I awoke to the distinctive sound of Jay Manuel’s voice. He was describing his humble fashion beginnings as head honcho of his Scarborough high school fashion show. Last night, the hometown boy did his alma mater proud, and Sears has taken notice⎯Jay equals cache. He brought a slick, polished feel, lacking from the Attitude collections of seasons past, as well as a serious dose (and strong nod) to the international designer runways. Strutting out in a tailored, sharp shouldered, white pantsuit, Yasmin Warsame led the way for a collection dominated by work-wear separates, a clever move for the Sears customer. What began as an ode to black and white, quickly turned to a lesson in colour theory with on-trend combos of eggplants, pumpkins, periwinkles and teals. My must have? The saturated cerulean coat sure to inject a little “Attitude” into my fall fashion lineup.
