The daily steal: Distressed jeans, $30
Distressed denim has become my weekend wardrobe staple. These bleached-washed skinny jeans from the Gap will make a nice addition to my stack of jeans. Even better: They’re on sale right now for $30 (gapcanada.ca).

By the numbers: Toronto denim institution Over The Rainbow turns 35
It’s not a bad gig to spend the afternoon getting a behind the scenes tour of one of Toronto’s top denim destinations, Over The Rainbow (101 Yorkville Ave., rainbowjeans.com) lead by the owner himself, Joel Carman. Carman’s jean shop celebrates its 35th anniversary this weekend and is throwing a big party tomorrow and Saturday with a DJ, photo booth, pizza and BBQ, samples from DaLish cosmetics and Dermalogica’s Clean Start, and denim giveaways, naturally.
Here’s a by-the-numbers peak at jeans institution:
1975 The year Joel Carman was driving a cab and met his future Over the Rainbow business partner, one of his passengers. (The two parted ways after the first year.)
$300 The monthly rent for Over The Rainbow’s first location on Bloor Street. If the shop didn’t work out, recalls Carman, “I’ll put a bed in there and I’ll have an apartment on Bloor Street.”

The daily steal: White jeans, $19
Though I’m probably asking for trouble sporting these clean white jeans from Joe Fresh during ice cream season, at only $19, it’s a risk I’m willing to take.

Men’s daily steal: Dark denim jeans, $39
Around this time of year I usually need a new pair jeans, because frankly I can’t be bothered to steam out road-salt stains on already frayed hems. And for $39, I don’t feel like too much of a lazy spendthrift when I mosey over to Joe Fresh Style (joe.ca) and nab a pair of their […]

Fashion news: Phi to close, Westwood does denim, and jewellery from braces?
Cult label Phi is another victim of These Times. The label, founded in 2003, is closing and the pre-spring delivery will be its last. [WWD]
U.S. department store Macy’s flagship Herald Square location was evacuated yesterday after an escalator caught fire. The blaze was minor and there were no injuries–except to Macy’s sales figures. [Racked]

The daily steal: Super-stretch jeggings, $78
Whoever thought that girls would want to wear jeans while practicing yoga was crazy—and yet, brand after brand has launched “jeggings”: leggings comfortable enough to wear while doing downward dog, but made to look like jeans. Some versions have included denim-like fading and materials, but I prefer the new Serena by Mavi ($78, mavi.com): the […]

Fashion news: The denim bubble, marathon fashions and Naomi Campbell sued
One of our fave FASHION Lovely/blogger/models, Hanneli Mustaparta has bleached out her brows for a shoot. [@HanneliM]
Surprise! The premium denim market was overinflated. “Charging $600 for jeans for no reason at all — those days are over,” You Nguyen of Levi’s told the New York Times. Ridiculous, right? You can buy a whole Where the Wild Things Are jumpsuit for that. Much more sensible. [NYTimes]
Forbes has named Yves Saint Laurent the top-earning dead celebrity. Congrats? [Forbes]
