5 tricks from Lily Collins’ TIFF red carpet look that will totally change the way you apply makeup
With bright hazel eyes and possibly the best eyebrows since Brooke Shields, it’s pretty much impossible for Lily Collins to not look stunning. While in Toronto this month for the TIFF premiere of Writers she walked the red carpet in an extremely elaborate Balmain dress—but it was her the simplicity of her glowing skin and dramatic lashes that held the look together. “I told Lily that I think this [red carpet] was a dress moment more than a hair and makeup moment [but we] still wanted to make her skin and her eyelashes a star,” explained celebrity makeup artist Beau Nelson. To do so, he used a full range of Victoria’s Secret VS Pro makeup products—but the real beauty was all in the application. Here are five tricks that will change the way you apply makeup:

Beauty Fix: How to do the perfect red lip, is it worth the splurge on a $25 mascara and heal your chapped lips for once and for all!
When you ask most women which beauty product they couldn’t live without on desert island it usually comes down to either a great mascara or a favourite lip balm. The choices makes sense: a full, fluttery set of lashes brightens the eyes and draws attention away from under-eye circles or blemishes, and nothing’s worse than the thought of being trapped with chapped lips and not a single drop of lip balm in sight. Regardless of whether or not you’re facing exile to a desert island, you’ll certainly appreciate the tips in this week’s Beauty Fix.

Beauty Fix: How to hide tan lines while wearing a strapless dress, mascara with the best curl and prevent your bike helmet from causing a breakout
Sometimes even the best beauty intentions go awry. A perfectly curled lash can be ruined by a too-stiff mascara or the safety of a bike helmet can lead to something actually worse than flat hair. However, there’s as many fixes out there as there are beauty products! This week we’ll tell you how to hide your end-of-summer tan lines, keep dark under-eye circles at bay and share a new eyeliner technique you need to try.

Beauty Fix: When to toss your razor, how to completely clear your lashes of mascara and a foolproof way for knowing when your makeup has expired
From almost-rusty razors to moisturizers you’ve had since university, we’re all guilty of doing whatever we can to get the most out of favourite products. The same sentiment can be said of a good blowout: you’ll do anything to make it last just one more day. But sometimes, for the sake of cleanliness, you just need to say goodbye. This week we have a foolproof trick for knowing when to pitch an old product, a razor that encourages you to keep sharp blades on hand and the best way to get a completely clean face at the end of the day.

Runway to Real Life: 5 easy steps to recreate Jonathan Saunders’ Miami Beach-inspired cat eye
When creating his Spring 2012 collection, Jonathan Saunders had an unlikely muse: chemically sedated Miami housewives from the ’50s. His models, clad in full skirts of Floridian pastels, sauntered down the runway with bronzed skin and flesh-toned lips. It was makeup artist Lucia Pieroni’s bold use of an oversized cat eye, however, that had beauty editors swooning.
By starting with a sunny glow, bringing some drama to the eyes, and slicking on a creamy nude lipstick, you can channel Saunders’ South Beach chic with just five products!

Runway to Real Life: 5 products are all you need to try Phillip Lim’s silver and pink look for spring!
When Phillip Lim created his Spring 2012 collection, fond memories of his childhood hobby of constructing and flying kites translated into a feeling of lightness and fun in his predominantly pastel collection. Models breezed down the runway wearing icy cool silver stripes of eyeshadow that perfectly complemented the fluttering fabric
The beauty look is really fresh and easy, so there isn’t much adjusting required to rock it in real life. You can recreate the eyes almost exactly—but add your own twist with a flush of pink on your cheeks and a creamy sheen to your lips. It’s a look that will breathe fresh air into your summer makeup routine.

Runway to Real Life: Try a softer version of YSL’s sultry spring look in just 4 easy steps!
“Young, eccentric and rich” were the words makeup artist Pat McGrath used to describe the beauty look she dreamed up for Yves Saint Laurent’s Spring 2012 show. McGrath painted models’ eyelids metallic brown, their lips metallic red and bleached away their brows. The look was confident and glamorous, if not a little bit severe.
I created a softer version of this dramatic look for real life with a few small tweaks and just four products. By opting for a wash of colour on the eyes instead of opaque brown, and by highlighting your brows with tinted gel instead of bleaching them off, you’ll be super glam without looking harsh. Finish with a pop of crimson red lipstick and you’ve got an elegant look for any occasion that requires an extra jolt of confidence!

Afternoon beauty fix: Stop a last-minute fleck of mascara from ruining an otherwise perfect makeup application
What am I supposed to do when I finish off a perfect eye-makeup application with a mistaken touch from my mascara wand? Black smudges ruin it every time!
It’s so typical that only when you’re halfway through your shadow application do you realize it may have been practical to apply your mascara first to avoid this inevitable flub. And since super lengthening and volumizing formulas have become en vogue, I swear it’s doubly difficult to avoid a dollop of the black wax. -
Afternoon beauty fix: Your best bets for amplifying lashes without falsies
Forget false lashes—what are my best bets for amplifying minimal eyelashes with mascara?
With baby doll lashes being a notable trend from the Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and Viktor & Rolf Spring 2012 runway shows, your efforts will not only amend your lack of buxom lashes, but also get you on-trend faster than you can say, “Is the glue dry yet?”
