Why Blunt Cuts Are Making a Comeback this Spring
I had only one directive for my hairstylist as I slipped into her chair and sized up my piece-y, shoulder-length mane. “Cut it really blunt,” I told her. She paused, surprised, with her scissors in mid-air above my head. “Like a blunt bob?” she asked. I took it she hadn’t heard that request in a […]

Braided updo: How to do a sweet summer style in just 5 easy steps
What could be more representative of the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer than a braided updo? When the hot sun is doing its sweaty, sweaty thing, there’s nothing better than keeping your hair off your face—and this braided updo does just that while also looking super pretty. (Also, if you’re headed to music festival, why not weave your hair into a braided crown instead of wearing a flower headband?)
I met up with Moroccanoil artistic director Antonio Corral Calero at the Quartz Crystal Spa at Toronto’s Trump International Hotel to talk about his work at New York Fashion Week and summer hair trends. It’s the fashion-forward appeal of the braided updo that made this look sit at the top of his summer hair list and he showed me how easy it is to do. (Just two French braids, some hairspray and bobby pins are all you need!)

How to get wavy hair: Loose, broken waves are on-trend for summer and easy to master with this tutorial
As the weather turns warmer and muggy temperatures make us want to spend as little time playing with blowdryers and heat tools as possible, it’s no surprise that summer is so synonymous with letting your hair do its own thing. Loose curls, natural textures and beach-inspired styles are all popular during summer months—but for those of us with straight hair a little bit of extra effort is required. So before you put away that curling iron, read on. Because if there’s one new summer style technique you’ll want to learn, it’s how to get wavy hair.
Showing us how to get wavy hair is Moroccanoil artistic director Antonio Corral Calero. I met up with Antonio at the Quartz Crystal Spa at Toronto’s Trump International Hotel to talk about summer hair trends and it was his recent work at New York Fashion Week during the Spring 2013 season that inspired this wavy hair look. Without a doubt the biggest style for this summer is the loose, broken wave.

Beauty Fix: Vacation time! Keep dyed hair safe in chlorine, what to pack for the cottage and how to look flawless after a long plane ride
The best part about summer? That it’s also the season of vacations! While we’re not lucky enough to do like the Europeans do and take an entire month off work, most of us will split town for at least one weekend. Whether you’re going to the cottage, have a far-away holiday booked or opt for a last-minute road trip, one question remains the same: What to pack? This week, Beauty Fix is here to help—after all, we want you to look your best when you’re stepping off the plane, coming out of the pool and cooling off after a long (protected!) day in the sun.

Afternoon beauty fix: Curlers are not just for your grandma
Every time I attempt to style my hair in an interesting way it backfires—I either look like a prom queen or my hair becomes way too greasy from all the product I use. What can I do differently? The most covetable styles this year are those with natural movement and a high-calibre shine. Think: big, […]

Afternoon beauty fix: Sick of short hair? This healthy mask will help make it longer
I’ve been wearing my hair short but am now anxious to grow it long enough for a ponytail—is it possible to speed up the growth, or do I need to rely on patience alone? Some argue that supplements, low stress, a healthy diet, and the warm summer months can speed up hair growth, while others […]

Inside Thursday’s Paws for the Cause gala: Toronto scenesters and doggies in designer duds
Walking through the oversized doghouse gate in Toronto’s Distillery District, it was clear that the Paws for the Cause gala and fashion show had marked its territory. The second annual doggies-on-the-catwalk event had the city’s cutest pooches sporting Canadian-made coats from Babies & Beasts while their celebrity dog walkers strutted their stuff in darling duds by Philip Sparks. Plaid-on-plaid suits, faux fur–collared jackets and ladylike dresses ensured that models like eTalk’s Tanya Kim and MTV’s Aliya-Jasmine Sovani looked (almost) as cute as their leashed companions.

Hair nectar of the gods
The FASHION copy department is home to a lot of thick, curly, somewhat unruly hair. Siofan Davies (assistant editor/research) possesses a mane of blonde shoulder-length curls, while I (copy and health editor) have tons of long chestnut waves prone to frizz. So we are a fertile testing ground for moisturizing/anti-frizz hair products—beauty editor Lesa Hannah will often lob something new over the partition for us to try. The two of us don’t always have the same hair reactions (she usually blow-dries, I arrive at work damp), but we are in complete agreement about one thing: Moroccanoil ($39, moroccanoil.com) is hair nectar from the gods.
