What Does Raf Simons’ Departure From Calvin Klein Mean for the Rest of the Industry?
In the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada, a helmet-haired Meryl Streep as chilly fashion editor Miranda Priestly castigates a junior employee for failing to recognize the difference between two similar teal belts. In an excoriating monologue, she traces the colour of the employee’s “lumpy blue sweater” back to a 2002 Oscar de la Renta […]

How Donald Trump Caused the Wild West to Reappear on the Spring Runways
The classic ingredients in a spaghetti western are good guys and bad guys, and there are plenty of “black hats” in the headlines these days. Though there’s also the odd sheriff who keeps his head down and tries to maintain law and order, villains generally rule the day. The shenanigans of cowboys and lone rangers […]

We’re head over high-top with this season’s 9 best sneaker collaborations
See the sneaker collaborations »
Thanks to the likes of Phoebe Philo, Isabel Marant and of course, Yeezy, sneakers have been on a fashion upswing for the past few years. No longer just functional, they’ve risen to the top of the heap with the stylish equivalent of bells and whistles: heels, studs, snakeskin and more. Fashion’s sneaker foray has also brought forth some seriously genius high-low collaborations, including Maison Martin Margiela x Converse, Riccardo Tisci x Nike and most recently Versace for Superga. And with the athletic trend showing little signs of backing down, it’s no wonder designers are kicking up their sneaker game for yet another season.
Here, we’ve rounded up 8 amazing sneaker collaborations that have us head over high-tops.

Paris Fashion Week: Seasonless dressing makes a comeback for Fall 2014
See the looks from Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014 »
There has been talk of seasonless dressing for, well, seasons, but at Friday’s shows and appointments, it seemed as though designers were foregoing traditional winter palettes and shapes in favour of short sleeves and sherbet shades. Don’t get me wrong, there were still plenty of furs, leathers and heavy wools, but arming ourselves against the raw winter elements is seeming less and less important. Maybe it’s because when these clothes start filling the racks in late August, the thermometer still reads 30 degrees? Whatever the reason, I’m calling out the springer side of fall shown here at Paris Fashion Week.
More than half of the looks in Roland Mouret‘s 41 look Fall 2014 collection were sleeveless (and I’m not even counting the short and sheer sleeved outfits). Among them were crop tops, exposed shoulders and mesh-panelled backs. The lightness of feather appliqués also seemed like a typically fair weather detail.

Paris Fashion Week: New shapes, fabrics and more at Lanvin, Dior, Chalayan and Isabel Marant for Spring 2014
Without actually going into the showroom and touching the fabrics it’s hard to know what you are looking at sometimes here at Paris Fashion Week Spring 2014.
Some of the shiny fabrics that designer Alber Elbaz showed for Lanvin on Thursday night looked crispy and light, like a glittery silk but that’s just hoping. I had the same issue at Hussein Chalayan with velourish-looking towel dresses, and molded gowns that were fuzzy at the bodice but melded into a smooth surface everywhere else.
On the other hand, Isabel Marant’s materials were a no-brainer. There were miles of ruffled cotton for peasant tops and zippered jackets with flouncy shoulders; frayed cotton denims with raised diamond patterns, and lace mini-dresses and bra tops. Where Marant’s collection had a natural, earthy realness almost everything Elbaz did shimmered and gleamed in the most unnatural way. Paris is in the throws of a passionate love affair with reflective fabrics.
One of my favourite Paris Fashion Week pastimes is watching the Showstudio live panel discussions. What stood out during the one on Dior was how the participants kept comparing Raf Simons’ Dior to John Galliano’s Dior. Interesting that Monsieur Christian Dior was barely mentioned
