Beauty Confessionals: I learned that Cara Delevingne probably doesn’t wax her brows
A couple of years ago I attempted to do something only highly skilled professionals should be allowed to do—I waxed my own eyebrows. See, this was a sad attempt to save money because at the time I was a starving student and any money I had left over after paying for books, food and rent […]

Beauty Confessionals: I wore fake nails for two years straight and will regret it forever
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY FINGRS/FLICKR We’ve all made beauty mistakes—from the chunky blonde streaks of our youth, to self-tanner blunders, we firmly believe that missteps are how we learn what works for us and what doesn’t. In our new series, Beauty Confessionals, our editors are admitting to some of their biggest beauty regrets. We do this because we care and we want you to learn from our mistakes (and because we want to hear your beauty confessionals, for we are all children of the internet and enjoy embarrassing ourselves online). Since this series was my cruel idea (am I cyber-bullying my coworkers?) I’ll kick things off.
One of my biggest beauty regrets is my total lack of regard when it comes to maintaining fake nails. In my lifelong quest to become Rihanna, three years ago I adopted her signature nail look—long, bright, and obviously fake. My shape of choice was pointy stiletto nails, partly because I was never brave enough for the square tips she’s been sporting as of late. Regardless, my motto was “the longer, the better” which is all fine and well, until you take into consideration the fact that I went two full years of getting bi-weekly fills and never giving my nails a chance to breathe. It’s no secret that fake tips aren’t great for the health of your real nails, but if you get them removed for a week every two months or so, it’s possible to maintain tips that are in pretty good shape.

Forever bronzed: Confessions of a long-time tanaholic
Photography courtesy of H&M See our favourite self-tanners »
Growing up in my family, tanning was pastime, pleasure and competitive sport. Pale was pejorative. My parents, both great tanners in their youth, lived in East Africa in the early ’70s, before I was born. That time in their lives seemed to me fabulously glamorous—never mind the fact that my sister, a baby then, contracted malaria and nearly died—because for two years, they were tanned. Deeply tanned. Not the amateur-hour suntan you might obtain after a week in Fort Lauderdale, the kind of profound, layered tan that makes you look like another person—an exceptionally well-leisured one.
I remember the four of us in the ’80s, lying on a quartet of loungers and passing the Hawaiian Tropic SPF 4 down the line like a familial baton. If my friends enjoyed splashing around in swimming pools and lakes, I liked lying down next to them, and nowhere in the vicinity of a sun-blocking parasol. Parasols were meant for other people, the ones who took long luncheons in the shade during prime UV time. (I preferred to feast on rays.)
When my sister and I had a productive tanning day, we’d high-five each other as the sun sank into the horizon and our freckles settled into our still-warm cheeks. A tan, like the travel that furnished it, was an escape from our regular selves, a gilded (if short-lived) costume.

Beauty fix: How to curb shine once and for all, a miracle brush for thin hair and more
Every week our Beauty Fix columnist takes on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more. Have a beauty question we haven’t answered? Email us at beautyfix@fashionmagazine.com or ask away in the comments below.
How can I curb shine without powdering repeatedly throughout the day?
There’s obviously an argument in favour of luminous skin in summer, but that usually means being in control of the areas that are radiant and glowing. If your rendition of “radiant and glowing” veers more towards “shiny mess,” then you probably should enlist the help of a product to reduce shine. Powdering your face is a bit high maintenance, and it’s also bound to lead to product build-up if you’re touching up throughout the day. Avoid that heavy look by misting your face with Face Atelier Ultra Matte ($40, faceatelier.com) instead. It can be used before or after makeup to minimize shine. The formula contains silicones that are heat-, moisture-, and sebum-resistant, which eliminates shine while giving skin an optical blur effect that softens the appearance of fine lines and pores. This stuff is a must-have for brides!

Now trending: 12 perfect pink perfumes that will have you smelling like everyone’s favourite spring hue
Check out our favourite pink fragrances »
On Wednesdays we wear pink… you just can’t always see it. Warmer weather brings with it a sense of hazy nostalgia and longing for simpler, sweeter times, and that goes for scents as well. We’re putting down the bold, androgynous fragrances that we’ve been infatuated with, and are taking a look at some of the pretty perfumes that always manage to leave us feeling as carefree as ever.
With the exception of the satin jacket uniform that belonged to the Pink Ladies of Grease, pink (especially light pink) has never really been considered a cool-girl staple. However, thanks to the reemergence of the ’90s that’s infiltrated the fashion and beauty world for the past few seasons, baby pink is back in a new way and this time, it’s badder than ever. While the pretty shade once belonged to the likes of teenaged Britney and Christina, these days it’s being accepted by the cool kids, including the original bad gal herself, RiRi.

Introducing Elizabeth and James Nirvana, Mary-Kate and Ashley’s newest fragrance collab
While you may have owned an assortment of Olsen twin-branded drugstore fragrances in the mid-’90s, the multi-millionaire moguls’ newest offering is of a much different calibre. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have ditched the pre-teen scent scene and entered the world of adult fragrance with two alluring eau de parfums. Launched as an extension of their contemporary Elizabeth and James brand, Elizabeth and James Nirvana White and Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black hit Sephora shelves this month and are sure to, for lack of a better cliche, fly off them.
Because in the era of just about every personality wanting to grow their brand—and audience— with a fragrance, it was actually consumer demand that prompted Sephora to partner with the Olsens. “Roughly two years ago, Sephora’s Kendo division — the development arm that handles strategic partnerships — approached Mary-Kate and Ashley after a fashion market research survey commissioned by the beauty retailer continually referenced the Olsens’ Elizabeth and James brand,” WWD reported in November.

Think about it: from nail polish to lipstick, eyeshadow to blush, Radiant Orchid is an ideal shade—and one that wears well on all skin tones. Of course, Pantone is one step ahead of us, releasing the details today for their forthcoming cosmetics collection with Sephora.
