With the weather rapidly cooling down it’s no surprise how many cozy knits, leather jackets and tailored pants appear in today’s batch of street style pictures from London Fashion Week Spring 2013. Houndstooth print paired with black tights and a bright red sweater brought elegance to the streets, while ripped jeans and fur vests were prominent visions and gave an edgy vibe to otherwise dressy attire. Black and white was also big—clearly colour palettes have toned down as the transition into fall officially begins—as were animal prints embroidered onto sweaters. (Part Givenchy panther, part Opening Ceremony kitty?) The biggest trend we spotted, however, goes to knits—a fall favourite for many. Knitted hats, sweaters and skirts in assorted patterns graced the streets of London, as well as our Fall & Winter 2012 trend guide. Olivia Palermo did knits differently, by pairing a cozy grey sweater with a textured leather skirt and lots of chunky jewelry. And while we may be at the end of London Fashion Week Spring 2013, there are many more street style pictures to come—after all, it’s time for Milan!

It sure wasn’t easy getting into the groove of fashion week the day after Labour Day weekend, but this season’s Semaine de la mode was a success on many levels. A brand new venue, the return of practically all of Montreal’s cult fave designers and the city’s first ever participation in the global event of Fashion’s Night Out made for four fabulous days that will be hard to forget—and difficult to outdo next year. London Fashion Week is already underway and our street style photographer Stefania Yarhi has left New York City just in time to catch up on all the Spring 2013 goings-on across the pond. Meaning: get ready for some pretty stunning street style shots from the streets of London! Right from the pages of our Fall & Winter 2012 trend guide, embellishments were everywhere—from sparkling add-ons to elaborately woven prints, you’ll see an array of colourful designs that brought life and vibrance into the bustling streets.

Remember when makeup artist Francois Nars created 65 different looks for the Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 show? Well, that didn’t happen this time around at New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 but some designers did decide to deviate from a uniform beauty statement, creating a few different looks for one show. Here’s our rundown of the best double takes from backstage:

Alexander Wang
Though Guido Palau gave every girl at Alexander Wang a tight, low ponytail, the accessory that ran down the centre part differed—a glow-in-the-dark adhesive strip on blondes and a black one for brunettes. The fair-haired set also had a different experience in the makeup chair: Diane Kendal bleached brows and created luminous skin, while their dark-haired counterparts had strong brows and matte skin.

The street style in and around the last two days of New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2013 shows were a frenzy of varsity jackets (Opening Ceremony), motorcycle jackets (Acne) see-through bags (from Kenzo to Claire’s) and Asian-inspired printed silks (Proenza Schouler, obv) jealousy-inducing heels (and even a few flats) as shot by our street style photographer Stefania Yarhi. Amidst the madness, Bill Cunningham was playing with some adorable bulldogs. You better bet we caught that too.

Backstage at Rodarte, I bumped into former FASHION cover girl Jessica Stam, who opened the show. I almost didn’t recognize her because of her raven hair, which she switched to a few months ago for the Met’s Schiaparelli and Prada exhibit. The shade really seemed to suit the “modern medieval” look and severe side parts Odile Gilbert crafted to appear as though models had shaved one half of their head. “I did it [again] a week ago,” Stam said of her new colour, leaving out the part about it being a cover up for a dye job gone wrong.

Even though New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2013 show season is only just winding down (and there are still three fashion capitals left to visit!), it’s never too early to predict trends. Here’s my breakdown of the top 10 trends from the runways this week:

“I always love a greasy eye,” said Dick Page, backstage at Marc By Marc Jacobs describing the punked-out makeup for the show. “I guess [for this look] I’m pre-empting the morning after, because if it’s pre-destroyed it can’t go bad, you already know it looks like shit,” he further explained. His greasy-eye-making product of choice? “I use a stupid-expensive lip balm from Shiseido. What I like about it is that it’s got a little pink in it.” There’s a worn-in tube of Shiseido Benefiance Full Correction Lip Treatment ($38, at department stores) on his makeup table that verifies his love for the product. For Marc by Marc Jacobs, Dick Page layered the slick balm over top of beige and black cream eye shadows on lids and upper and lower lash lines.

Oxblood is certainly the colour of the season and from what we’ve seen so far at New York Fashion Week it’s still going strong for Spring 2013. And, like many colour/fashion/beauty trends it’s a shade that’s been in the spotlight before. Deep red lipstick definitely had its moment in the mid-’90s (hello, Drew Barrymore!) and I distinctly remember being obsessed with a special edition bottle of Wet n Wild nail polish that was a rich oxblood shade.

From the city that never sleeps, it also seems that the fashion crowd never sleeps during fashion week, as photographer Stefania Yarhi has caught even more stylish ladies (and a few men!) outside the shows at New York Fashion Week Spring 2013.

The excitement was in the air as Hollywood’s elite sat in the coveted front row of Rodarte’s Spring 2013 show on Tuesday. Plunked beside Rachel Zoe and Anna Wintour in the front row was Kirsten Dunst (fresh from her visit to Toronto for TIFF to promote her upcoming film On the Road), who Yahri captured leaving the show wearing an on-trend cream and brown striped dress with lace and ruffles from Rodarte’s Fall 2012 collection.
