CFDA Awards 2013: Our recap of the winners, the red carpet outfits and more
See photos from the CFDA Awards 2013 »
The who’s who of fashion piled into the Lincoln Centre’s Alice Tully Hall last night for the CFDA Awards 2013 in New York City. For those who are a little unfamiliar to the event, the ceremony is to the fashion industry what the Grammys are to music. Let’s just say, you’re more likely to see Zac Posen on the red carpet, that you are J Biebs.
From Hilary Rhoda’s Helmut Lang number to Nicole Richie’s metallic maxi, the red carpet saw fashions finest (accompanied by their favourite six-foot-tall friends) in a variety of daring ensembles. Adriana Lima’s floor sweeping Givenchy frock left little to the imagination with its sheer skirt, while Jessica Chastain’s little black after-party-ready dress looked fabulous with her main accessory, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, whom she later presented the international award to. Erin Wasson looked positively futuristic in her edgy Alexander Wang gown while Miranda Kerr supported the boys at Proenza Schouler with a stunning blue mini by the label. Kerr’s fellow Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel accompanied a very lucky Prabal Gurung to the event. Poor Michael Kors, who couldn’t decide on which model-friend to be his plus one, ended up bringing two dazzling dates, Karolina Kurkova and Cody Horn, who wore shimmering pieces from his collection. Meanwhile, Mary-Kate Olsen swapped sisters for the night, dressing Elizabeth Olsen in The Row while she stuck to her vintage penchant in Issey Miyake.

Miu Miu Spring 2013 Ad Campaign: Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima and Arizona Muse star as innocent ingénues in the seductive new photos

By Lindsay Tapscott
Ruby red walls and delicate pink flowers; tie-dyed furs casually slung over shoulders; duchesse satin dresses and dark denim overcoats: Miu Miu’s modern “dishabille” femme fatale is here, in these just-released images from the label’s Spring 2013 ad campaign.
Photographed in New York by Inez & Vinoodh and starring many models of the moment, including Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima and Arizona Muse, the campaign follows Miu Miu’s tradition of subversive advertising imagery, offering us an updated, very Miuccia Prada-perverse, take on contemporary femininity, rich with nuance and authenticity. Celebrating the Miu Miu woman and all her facets—femme fatale, innocent ingénue, playful belle, nostalgic beauty—the campaign depicts a series of mise-en-scenes in an ambiguous domestic setting. Nonchalant groupings of the girls in various states of (un)dress, crumpled bedsheets, close-ups of a hand here, a high heel there, the campaign is quietly seductive in its portrayal of a new kind of insouciant feminine elegance.

Glitter, gloss, wings, 6-inch heels, plenty of pink, big, sexy hair and legs that go on for days—the Victoria’s Secret Angels know how to give good glam. Hours before the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show began, we headed backstage amidst clouds of hairspray, racks of Swarovski-encrusted pink satin Victoria’s Secret robes and throngs of editors/bloggers/photographers to get the inside scoop from the heavenly ones (The jitters! The diets! The costumes!). Pre-show, Twitter was a-buzz with news of Karlie Kloss’s new ‘do but post-show it was all about her controversial Native American-inspired costume, which subsequently will be pulled from the televised show on December 4th. From Justin Bieber to Bruno Mars to mega-babe Rihanna, the musical performances didn’t disappoint, nor did the star-studded front row which included Alexander Wang, 30 Rock’s Katrina Bowden, Debbie Harry, members of Kings of Leon , Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szohr and Vanessa Hudgens and her boyfriend Austin Butler. Here, FASHION shares our all-access pass to this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, backstage and beyond….

They Said/We said: The scoop on Donna Karan’s controversial new ad
Donna Karan’s Spring 2012 collection was heavily inspired by Haiti. Karan’s been spending a lot of time in the Caribbean country doing charity work since last year’s earthquake, and uses her celebrity to raise money for her own charity and several others. All of the print ads for the collection were shot in Haiti, and they’re rich in the country’s culture but—surprise, surprise!—sources are claiming one of the pictures is insensitive and even racist.
The controversial picture has Adriana Lima in front, glowing in an olive-coloured jumpsuit and statement necklace, with two Haitian men lurking in the shadows in the background. The complaints again these ads range from the choice of using a white model in Haitian-based photos and the placement of Haitian men in the shadows of an otherwise glamorous photo, to the picture drawing attention to the huge divide between a luxe fashion brand and the Haitian population. None of the pictures make direct reference to Haiti’s extreme poverty, but the juxtaposition is very clear.

They said/We said: About Face, a new documentary about supermodels reveals what it’s like behind the scenes
We all know modeling has always been somewhat of a controversial issue. Retailers are often criticized for their depiction of the female body—just yesterday Jezebel recently reported that fast-fashion empire H&M digitally produces the models’ bodies on their website and sticks on a real person’s head in post production. There’s also the whole “do models really eat?” issue, which recently made headlines when Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima revealed her diet prior to the big VS fashion show. A new documentary About Face, premiering at Sundance next month, is also making headlines for its gritty portrayal of how supermodels like Christie Brinkley, Jerry Hall, Cheryl Tiegs and Christy Turlington were treated during the peak of their careers in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

They said/We said: Want to look like a Victoria’s Secret Angel? Adriana Lima shares her intense diet leading up to the annual show
The question of what or even whether models eat is nothing new and when asked, models usually give the standard answer, “anything I want,” and are sure to mention pizza or burgers. So it’s (kind of) refreshing that Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima has been so blunt when talking about her diet leading up to the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show airing on November 29.
Millions watch the angels walk the coveted runway wearing barely there lingerie, so it’s not surprising that Lima has been working with a trainer since August (she’s since increased her workouts to twice a day). During her training a nutritionist also prescribes the right protein shakes, vitamins, and supplements to keep her energy up and Lima will drink a gallon of water a day. Nine days before the show, Lima will only drink protein shakes that include powdered eggs (yum). Two days before the show she’ll drink “normally” instead of a gallon of water and, finally, 12 hours before the show she’ll stop drinking all together.
The intense diet matches the over-the-top show that Victoria’s Secret puts on every year. While all of the angels look amazing, we’re not sure we’re ready to give up solid food for powdered eggs.

The spotter’s guide to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
Let’s be clear about one thing: The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is not really about fashion. But we knew that, and anyway, it doesn’t really matter. Not to the hordes of young women that appear out of nowhere, pink shopping bags in hand, within a 500-metre radius of any of the lingerie titan’s locations. (There are eleven stores in Canada–four Victoria’s Secret and seven for their younger Pink line.) Not to the crowd that piled into the Armory on Lexington Avenue on November 10 to see the show–a group that included Gerard Butler, Adrien Grenier, Russell Simmons, Malin Akerman and Paris Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. Not to every person who we’ve spoken to in the two weeks since who want to know how the Angels look up close (gorgeous, obviously), how much they have to exercise (Adriana Lima trains six days a week leading up to the show) and whether the wings are heavy (Candice Swanepoel‘s trainer give her extra shoulder exercises to prepare).

Angels (a.k.a. Adriana Lima, Chanel Iman and Erin Heatherton) descend to Toronto for a private Victoria’s Secret party
You know you’re at a Victoria’s Secret party when you have flower petals stuck in your teeth–pink flower petals garnishing your pink cocktail, no less. In honour of Toronto’s first Victoria’s Secret, at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, some angels flew over to help us celebrate at a private in-store event, which felt like a salute to bras, panties and the colour pink. Naturally, the few male attendees looked slightly out of place until, of course, the angels descended, at which point their eyes grew to be the size of dinner plates.
