Who would you crown Queen of Cannes? Our 5 best dressed on the red carpet
See the complete Cannes 2014 red carpet »
After nearly three full weeks of glitz and glamour, the 67th Annual Cannes International Film Festival is sadly over, cold turkey. If you, like us, are struggling through day one sans Cannes, fear not because we have just the thing to combat glamour withdrawal. In the spirit of festival competition, and an attempt to fill that Cannes-shaped hole in your heart, may we present, Queen of Cannes: A fashion roundup.
Five fashion powerhouses stood out amongst the plethora of worthy candidates at this year’s festival. Off the Richter web buzz ensued over Blake Lively’s style during the festival. From the burgundy Gucci Premiere dress she wore to the festival’s opening ceremony to the black and white gown she wore to the premiere of The Captive, Lively proved she could hold her own as the (potential) Queen of Cannes. Also showing off her fashion queen qualifications, Cate Blanchett never fails to amaze us in the sartorial department from channeling her inner déesse in a champagne-toned Giorgio Armani Privé form-fitting lace gown to working a bedazzled Givenchy couture dress. While Jennifer Lawrence was back to stunning us in Dior Couture ensembles, Jessica Chastain experimented with bold-coloured gowns that naturally blew us away. But if we were to call out one A-list who arguably wore the most unique dress of the entire festival, it would have to be Marion Cotillard. The cinema darling donned a Maison Martin Margiela Couture dress encrusted with tiny random objects like screws and bits of beer cans. All of the curious sequins were found at flea markets in Brussels and Paris, and the unusual dress took 67 hours to create.

Cannes 2014: The 11 best dressed on the amfAR red carpet

The amfAR gala, largely considered a social highpoint of the Cannes Film Festival, consisted of a Red themed, Marilyn Monroe inspired fashion show extravaganza! The term “extravaganza” may seem a bit over the top, but so is this event.
The show, now in it’s eleventh year, featured one-of-a-kind pieces from 35 of the top fashion houses (Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Tom Ford, Givenchy just to name a few) with nearly 40 models working the runway in the one-off couture gowns. The dresses are subsequently auctioned off to raise money for AIDS research. Last year the gowns raised a whopping $2 million dollars.

Cannes 2014: The best men’s fashion moments (and by that we mean eye candy)
See the Cannes 2014 men’s fashion »
Images of beautiful women in couture gowns gracing the Cannes red carpet have dominated web buzz for the last several days and though we can’t get enough, we think it’s time for a valid chiffon pause in honour of Hollywood’s snappiest gentleman dressers. The Cannes 2014 red carpet has been good for men’s fashion, from Gucci lapels to laid back button downs.
Who are we kidding—roll out the eye candy!
A very grown-up Robert Pattinson emerged for the premiere of his new work, Maps to the Stars, looking festival apropos in all black and sporting a shorter, more mature (and therefore, more hot) haircut. And, whether Ryan Gosling was intentionally smoldering for the camera, or blinded by the Cannes sun, he seemed to gaze right through the lens and directly into our souls. The Canadian heartthrob looked handsome as ever in a light blue button up, brown trousers, and well-worn brown leather shoes. Blake Lively’s red carpet co-star Ryan Reynolds pulled his fashion weight wearing head-to-toe Gucci with a Bulgari watch (those two sure know how to work the red carpet)! With all the cinema excitement along the Riviera, one thing remains clear, no one can rock a light beige three-piece suit better than Adrien Brody.

Beyond the foamy curtain of the Côte d’Azur lays the scene of cinema’s annual cult gathering—Cannes, a festival like no other. It is an event that has captivated audiences for the past 67 years with its unique and intoxicating brand of Mediterranean glamour.
Besotted by champagne soaked parties, historic hotels, and delectable French fare, it is a veritable paradise of indulgences for the beautiful, rich, and famous (which is at least what reading Assouline books on the topic will lead you to believe). The level of exclusivity on the Cannes red carpet guarantees that only a negligible percentage of the population will ever be granted access beyond its velvet ropes, which of course only adds to its prestigious reputation.

Cannes amfAR Gala: We rub shoulders with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessica Chastain and more at the star-studded charity night

It was a cool, wet week for the Cannes Film Festival, but the skies cleared in time to cast a warm glow over the 20th annual Cinema Against AIDS amfAR (the Foundation for AIDS research) Gala at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.
Our tinted Mercedes SUV was one of many that lined a steep incline to the luxurious venue just outside of Cannes. After passing through gates (with a smattering of fans waving), we were led past a pack of photographers who urged us civilians to “hurry up!” so they could shoot the likes of Heidi Klum, Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Aishwarya Rai, Rosario Dawson and Zhang Ziyi.
Inside the main house we spotted Adrien Brody waiting for his girlfriend outside a washroom, while John Taylor of Duran Duran air-kissed a friend. We moved to the rear of the building to arrive atop a wide dramatic staircase. A long path leading to the sea was covered in a cushion-like platform. Perhaps to protect the grass? Or visitors’ heels?
Nearby we saw Jessica Chastain and Milla Jovovich posing playfully with host Sharon Stone for an event photographer. Down the stairs were tables stacked with Moët & Chandon Imperial. I drained my glass as Jeremy Renner popped out from a shrub and Pucci designer Peter Dundas wandered by laughing, with two models on either arm. A ragtime jazz band played as we followed the band in to dinner. En route we passed a seated Leonardo DiCaprio talking with Goldie Hawn—over the evening he was lauded repeatedly for his philanthropic efforts.

Goodbye LBD because this summer it is all about the LWD. With the 66th Cannes Film Festival still going strong, we’ve noticed many leading ladies opting to wear white on the red carpet. Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Biel have all been wearing white throughout the festival—the way the colour complements the beautiful French Riviera setting could of course, be a strong reason why it’s been so popular. Most recently, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Marion Cotillard caught our eye, with both working variations of the little white dress on the Cannes red carpet. It’s certainly made the LWD a must-have on our summer shopping list.
Supporter of the cause and one of the top models for The Ultimate Gold Collection fashion show, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley arrived at this year’s amfAR Gala looking glamorous in the most effortless way possible. Wearing Dior, the white crepe strapless dress consists of an off-white and pink-print silk and satin skirt. She accessorized with a pair of crisp white pointed-toe Christian Louboutin heels and completed her look with smoky eyes and loose, wavy hair.

The Cannes Film Festival is not only an event to premiere new films, it’s also a time to celebrate the timeless films. In commemoration of Cleopatra’s 50th anniversary, many stars, including Jessica Chastain and Milla Jovovich, attended a special edition screening of this classic film last night. Though the two starlets dressed in very different looks (dark versus light, lots of skin versus completely covered), both of these ladies bewitched every single camera in their own glamorous way.
Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain may have been the luckiest girl on the Cannes red carpet. The co-host of the Cleopatra screening donned a Bulgari diamond and sapphire necklace and a matching ring that was given to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton as a token of his love. Looking every bit as regal, Chastain allowed her exquisite jewellery to take the spotlight and opted for a simple, long sleeve ivory Versace gown from the Spring 2013 collection, paired with nude platform heels. With finger waves and side-swept hair, Chastain dazzled the red carpet with her natural beauty.
