Cannes 2013 red carpet beauty: The scoop on Aishwarya Rai’s hair, Marion Cotillard’s mascara and more

FASHION’s beauty editor Rani Sheen is currently at the Cannes Film Festival getting the red carpet scoop on all things beauty. Here’s what she witnessed over the weekend.
The inclement weather at the beginning of the world’s glitziest film festival did nothing for the beauty looks on the red carpet—Carey Mulligan bravely battled sheets of rain trying to derail her pale-pink Dior Couture gown and sleek centre-parted hair at the Great Gatsby’s premiere. However, the sun started to shine on Sunday and the stars took full advantage. Aishwarya Rai (commonly referred to as the most beautiful woman in the world) let her long, brown hair flow in natural waves at both the premiere of Blood Ties and the Cohen brother’s latest, Inside Llewyn Davis. But at Sunday’s gala for 100 Years of Bollywood, the Indian film and actual princess tried a style that quite befitting for the occasion.

Cannes 2013: Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson, Nicole Kidman and more top our best Cannes red carpet looks
See all the Cannes 2013 red carpet photos »
The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival is underway and the never-ending parade of red carpet dresses certainly makes it one of the top sartorial events of the year. As a twelve-day film festival that hosts multiple parties, photo calls and premieres each day, A-list stars and international icons bringing their best looks to the French Riviera. To help keep track, we’re rounding up the top looks from the Cannes 2013 red carpet so far—and we’ll keep adding more as the festival continues.
Arguably the most anticipated movie of the year, The Great Gatsby, had its European premiere at Cannes last week—and the red carpet was filled with outfits just as glamourous as the film itself, including Cara Delevingne’s sultry Burberry laced ensemble and Carey Mulligan’s Dior Couture gown.
Meanwhile, Emma Watson turned heads last week at the premiere of her latest film, The Bling Ring, in a stunning Chanel gown. Earlier in the day, the wizard-turned-fame-obsessed-teen (that is, on screen!) showed off an equally stunning burgundy ensemble by Christopher Kane.

It’s only day three of the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival and the glamour just keeps on coming. In keeping with the trends we saw throughout this year’s award season, many shades of champagne are coming down the Cannes red carpet. Standing out from the set are two raven-haired stars, Eva Longoria and Rooney Mara. Donning different styles of form-fitting gowns at their respective Cannes events, both of these leading ladies flaunted their amazing figures and classic beauty on the red carpet.
Though she was not the star of today’s premiere of Le Passe (The Past), Eva Longoria definitely knows how to make an entrance at the Grand Palais at Cannes Film Festival. As one of the brand ambassadors of L’Oréal Paris, Longoria looked every bit of a golden girl in a heavily embroidered gold gown by Zuhair Murad, from the Spring 2013 Couture collection. Complete with a floor-sweeping train and a low cut back, the ex-Desperate Housewives actress gracefully worked the red carpet showing off her toned back (and her Celtic tattoo!) while posing for the cameras. Allowing her intricately designed dress to steal the spotlight, she finished off her look with cat eyes and neutral pink lips, with her hair tied back in a low ponytail.

It’s the second day of the Cannes Film Festival and the glamour continues on the red carpet with the premiere of Sofia Coppola’s film The Bling Ring. Though Emma Watson does not play the main character of the film, she definitely took centre stage turning heads today at her first Cannes 2013 event. Donning two different outfits for day and night, the Brit actress effortlessly pulls off both her looks.
At The Bling Ring photo call earlier today, Emma Watson, who showed no signs of her alter ego Nicki, wore a burgundy outfit by Christopher Kane, which consisted of a burgundy crop top with feather trimmings and a matching skirt from Kane’s Fall 2013 collection. Watson showcased her natural beauty by keeping her makeup at a minimal and hair tied back in a neat bun. She finished off the look with a pair of sky-high black suede stilettos.

Cara Delevingne vs. Carey Mulligan: Who wore it best on Cannes opening night?

See all the best Cannes 2013 red carpet photos so far »It may have been pouring on opening night of the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival in France but no natural condition could dampen the glamour of this event. Kicking off with the European premiere of The Great Gatsby, celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, and Frida Pinto (with their umbrella holders in tow) graced the glamorous carpet.
Changing out of her menswear-inspired strapless Balenciaga jumpsuit from the photo call earlier in the day, Gatsby star Carey Mulligan gave us major Gwyneth at the Oscars in an iridescent pale pink princess gown by Christian Dior. Pairing the look with Tiffany & Co. drop earrings and a statement red lip, Mulligan swapped her typically pinned back hair in favour of a middle-parted straight down-do.

Robert Pattinson follows in Kristen Stewart’s footsteps: He’s signed a deal to promote perfumes with Dior
If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, consider Kristen Stewart to be blushing. Stewart—the face of Balenciaga’s Florabotanica—can now offer her boyfriend and fictional vampire husband, Robert Pattinson, some tips on being the face of a fragrance because he has reportedly signed a contract with Dior.
RPatz will be modeling for men’s fragrance campaigns (unlike a certain Brad Pitt we know) and a source told E! News, “Rob likes the brand.” We consider that statement has to be true because Robert wore Dior Homme while walking both the red carpets at the Teen Choice Awards and the Cannes Film Festival.

Best dressed in Venice: Vote for your favourite red carpet look
As a pre-cursor to TIFF, the Venice Film Festival can sometimes be seen as a rival to our Canadian red carpet extravaganza. Luckily though, the Italian festival has given us a glamorous preview of what to look forward to style-wise from the celebrities that are expected to hit our fair city later this week. In past years at TIFF, stars have been know to dress down for their big premieres, rather than go full-out glamour as they have this year at Cannes and now in Venice. But don’t fret, we can still expect to see all of our favourite designers showcased on and off the red carpet this year. Stay tuned, as we’ll be updating the latest looks from Venice as they come in.

They said/We said: Harvey Weinstein reportedly believes that Lana Del Rey has the acting chops to make it as a movie star
Photography by Larry Busacca/Getty Images Love her or hate her, Lana Del Rey’s meteoric rise to fame is showing no signs of flagging. After critics harshly panned the plush-lipped singer’s Saturday Night Live performance in January, it seemed like for a moment there, Del Rey’s star appeal was beginning to wane. However, one fashion accolade, a trip to Cannes’ red carpet and news of a big film industry opportunity later, and Del Rey is back on top.
First, there was the creation of her eponymous Mulberry bag, which was first announced in February. Its sales are fast approaching that of another famous Mulberry bag: the Alexa, named after Alexa Chung. “We wanted it to be functional with an uptown twist as Lana is such a wonderful uptown girl herself,” said Mulberry’s creative director Emma Hill.
The fashion world aside, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was reportedly overheard at the Cannes Film Festival telling the “Video Games” singer that the “camera loves her.”
Weinstein, the co-founder of Miramax, is said to think Del Rey has all the makings of a movie star, from her stage presence to her stunning features to her gritty-meets-chic sense of style. The man obviously knows the movie biz inside and out (The Artist and The King’s Speech are two heavy-hitters that he’s responsible for), so if he is giving Del Rey the stamp of approval, other movie industry types will probably follow suit.
Whether or not she ends up on the big screen anytime soon, one thing’s for certain: this “self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra” has an It factor that is opening doors for her in every direction.

Prada, Polanski and Helena Bonham Carter redefine retail therapy at Cannes
Roman Polanski and Prada debuted their film-meets-fashion collaboration at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend. The film, A Therapy, stars Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Kingsley, and is a quirky three-and-a-half-minute reminder of what it’s like to fall in love with fashion.
We’ve all been there—that moment your eyes fall upon an irresistible piece that you simply must get your hands on. Kingsley, who plays therapist to Bonham Carter, is not immune to this love of fashion, and when he lays eyes upon his client’s Prada purple fur, he finds himself hypnotically drawn to the coat. Hey, just like the film states, Prada suits everyone.
