We Chat With Janelle Monáe About Her Explosive Film Debut
Janelle Monáe has spent most of her career learning how to embellish and magnify every moment she can when she’s on stage or in front of a camera. When you watch her sing live or perform in videos for tracks such as “Tight Rope”, “Q.U.E.E.N” and “Electric Lady”—you immediately understand why so many people compare […]

Eight Braids You Can Do Without Being Culturally Offensive
Some of my earliest childhood memories are of my mom parting my hair with comb at the centre of my head before braiding my long black hair into two elbow-length plaits. It’s nice to know that I have something in common with North West, although her braids are probably not being done by mommy, Kim […]

Street Style, London Fashion Week: 29 shots from this weekend’s shows
After a week of looking at snowy, fur-filled street style shots from New York, what a breath of fresh air it is to see bits of spring popping up outside London Fashion Week. Now, whether or not the lighter clothes are warranted (last time I checked, it was only 6 degrees across the pond) is […]

Chanel’s Cruise show brings glitzy celebrity style: Who was best dressed in Dubai?
See the Chanel Cruise celebrity style up close »
Given the fact that the Chanel 2014 Cruise collection took place in Dubai, there was never a doubt the A-list guest list would be anything short of the best.
Dancing to the tunes of Janelle Monae in the jewel of a city, celebrities were dressed in the most recent Chanel-clad ensembles, making any fan of the designer house swoon with envy. One to lean towards more gentleman-inspired outfits, Tilda Swinton surprised us in an elegant black tweed dress that featured a corset-inspired cut from the Fall 2014 collection. Dakota Fanning also sported a similar silhouette standing out against the grey skyline in a multi-colour feather-inspired Spring 2014 couture dress. But if it were a competition of who embodied the culture of the city best with their sartorial choices, it would have to go to long-time ambassadress Vanessa Paradis and Freida Pinto. While Paradis teamed a ‘20s-inspired hairstyle with an ivory sleeveless embroidered dress, we loved how the Indian actress worked a frilly two-piece ensemble from the Pre-Fall 2014 collection making it the ideal outfit for the desert city.

Inside Chanel’s Cruise show in Dubai: Oilcan handbags, crescent double Cs and more!
See the Chanel photos from Dubai »
Talk about an oasis. Over the course of eight weeks, Chanel turned a completely barren, man-made desert island off the shore of Dubai into a party venue for the unveiling of its 2015 Cruise collection.
“This probably cost more than any film I’ve made” remarked Tilda Swinton, one of 1,000 guests who boarded a wooden “abra” launch for the 5 minute journey across the placid Arabian Gulf. A sand pathway led to a lattice facade of stylized double Cs.
Inside the air-conditioned hall, built just for the night, sunken banquettes surrounded low tables topped with ornate lanterns and tiers of savoury pastries. The crowd was a veritable United Nations, from Asian men with Chanel Boy bags slung around their suits to cloaked ladies with violet and emerald croc 2.55 purses popping against their black abayas.

The Suit: A look back at the smouldering Le Smoking
See the tuxedo suit on the Spring 2013 runways »
Sometimes a woman feels like puttin’ on the Ritz. Whether it’s worn by Marlene Dietrich, Bianca Jagger or Rihanna, a tuxedo suit has the power to ignite a room faster than any little black dress. With its sharp lines, classic appeal and feminine details—a frilly shirt here, a rhinestone bow-tie there—it’s little wonder that fashion houses like Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent and Ermanno Scervino have reimagined this iconic eveningwear look for Spring 2013.
The first haute couture tuxedo suit—a black velvet pantsuit with a matching vest and a white shirt with ruffled cuffs—was designed by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966. Dubbed Le Smoking, this gender-bending look instantly caught fire, and soon afterward the designer launched his ready-to-wear label, Rive Gauche, with more accessibly priced smoking suits. The timing couldn’t have been better, since the second wave of the women’s emancipation movement marched into the history books that same decade. Power dressing after dark was now an exercise in equal opportunity.
When YSL took his final runway bow in 2002, he had played on countless variations of this signature ensemble in his 45-year career. “Fashions come and go, but style is forever,” he once said. May the tuxedo suit always burn bright.
