The battle against colourism: How beauty brands are addressing darker skin tones
In the days before the Academy Awards, actress Lupita Nyong’o could have stuck to primping for her big night, but instead she chose to speak about “dark beauty” at the annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon. She read aloud a letter from a fan who, after seeing her success, had decided not to buy a skin-lightening cream. Nyong’o explained that she too once hated her skin tone, that she was teased and taunted, and that her “one prayer to God was that I would wake up lighter-skinned.” That fan wasn’t the only one paying attention: When Vanity Fair was accused of lightening the 12 Years a Slave star’s deep brown skin for her portrait in its February 2014 Oscar issue, armchair comments ranged from “Black people like to be adequately lit too” to “It’s so nice to finally see a black celebrity with really dark skin.”
It’s easy to think of Beyoncé, Rihanna and Freida Pinto as symbols of inclusivity; they are, but with their light skin and/or light eyes, they represent a beauty ideal that many women of colour can never hope to achieve. Colourism (or shadeism) is a type of discrimination that occurs within ethnic groups, creating a quiet divide between light- and dark-skinned people of colour. It drives women to choose too light a foundation; use lightening creams with dubious ingredients and results; or opt for surgical treatments. If you’re any type of brown, hearing an auntie say, “Stay out of the sun or you’ll get too dark!” is about as common as being told to eat your vegetables.

Exclusive: Yadim is the new global makeup artist for Maybelline New York
Maybelline New York has been full of big news lately: first came the announcement that British model Jourdan Dunn is its new global face, and now 30-year-old Yadim has been tapped to be the brand’s new global makeup artist, replacing Charlotte Willer. Now based in New York, San Diego-raised Yadim grew up hanging out with club kids and drag queens in downtown L.A. He’s brought his creative sensibility to ad campaigns for Balmain (with a glowing Rihanna), H&M (featuring a wave-splashed Gisele) and the Gap (the much-discussed shot of Waris Ahluwalia and Quentin Jones), as well as runway shows such as Emilio Pucci, DKNY and Haider Ackermann, and editorial shoots with Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga.

Jourdan Dunn is the new global face of Maybelline New York
Big model news: Maybelline New York announced today that Jourdan Dunn will be the new global face of the brand. After being discovered by a model scout in the sunglasses section of a British store in 2007 (the dream, right?) Dunn’s impressive career has included walking the runway for top designers like Oscar de la Renta, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga, as well as appearing in print campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Burberry and Rag & Bone. The London native (and BFF to Cara Delevingne) will be gracing Maybelline New York’s print and television campaigns beginning this month.

See the Joe Fresh Fall 2014 backstage beauty gallery »
We may be itching for spring weather to arrive, but there’s nothing like a superb Fall 2014 show to make us—dare we say it?—want to embrace the cold just a little bit longer. At Joe Fresh, the beauty was just as pitch-perfect as the winter-ready collection. Maybelline New York lead makeup artist Grace Lee said that Joe Mimran wanted “the girls to look like they’ve been out wandering in the nasty polar vortex,” and, well, we’ll happily spend some more time outside if we can look as perfectly flushed as these models.

Pink Tartan backstage beauty: The “Veruschka bundled up in furs” look may be the prettiest makeup yet for Fall 2014
See the Pink Tartan Fall 2014 backstage beauty gallery »
Weathering an ice storm doesn’t always look as pretty as it did on the Pink Tartan runway last night. Makeup artist Grace Lee gave the models a slight windburn flush on the cheeks using Maybelline Master Glaze in “Pink Fever,” icy highlights with snow-white Color Tattoo in “Too Cool” mixed with Baby Lips, and a glow of bronzer all over the face for a touch of winter sun. Skin was evened out with Baby Skin primer and given a matte finish with Fit Me foundation. Designer Kim Newport-Mimran referenced Veruschka bundled up against the snow in furs, from a classic Richard Avedon Vogue shoot, so the eyes were given a slight ’60s look with fake upper lashes and a sweep of warm brown gel liner blended out in the crease of the eye. Brows were filled in with pencil and brushed upwards, so they looked full and perfectly groomed. Lee further “contoured” the eyes using kohl pencils—in cream along the waterline to make eyes appear wider, and in warm brown underneath the lashline. Lashings of Pumped Up mascara completed the look.

Is it possible to wear retinol during the day?
We’re encouraged to apply retinol at night for multiple reasons. First off, your skin is more receptive to active ingredients (like retinol) at night because it’s entered a reparative state. Secondly, retinol can make skin sensitive to sun, so daily SPF application is crucial when you’re dabbing on the retinol at night. All that being said, if you combine an SPF with a retinol, rules can indeed be broken. StriVectin-AR Advanced Retinol Day Treatment SPF 30 ($109, murale.ca) is the ultimate daytime face product. Not only does it work to reverse wrinkles and fine lines, it will even out skin tone, refine texture and fight off UVA and UVB damage, all without irritating skin. Quite the multitasking product to put into your daily rotation! -

How important is sleep to healthy skin? I haven’t been getting much sleep lately and I’m not sure if it’s negatively impacting my skin.
While a lot of emphasis is placed on the importance of healthy eating, exercise and proper skincare, getting a proper night’s rest is often underestimated in terms of how much of a difference it makes to overall health, skin being no exception. While skincare products cannot entirely replace the benefits of a good night’s sleep, they can help prompt an earlier bedtime. If you aren’t able to unwind at the day’s end, the lavender scent of Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Skin Protectant Nighttime Miracle Moisturizer ($47, thebay.com) can help slow you down. It’s incredibly soothing and the formula contains shea butter and vitamin E to hydrate, as well as salicylic acid for a bit of exfoliation— revealing skin that looks the precise opposite of exhausted.
