Mikhael Kale Fall 2014: Painterly smudges and bad-ass stud details open World MasterCard Fashion Week
See the Mikhael Kale Fall 2014 collection »
Mikhael Kale’s Fall 2014 show opened World MasterCard Fashion Week last night in Toronto, marking the designer’s first time showing on the official fashion week schedule. Film of a twisting nude female torso began the show, foreshadowing the nearly nude sheer organza to be featured later on in the designer’s latest edgy yet feminine collection.
Beginning with a series of stud-embellished cashmere and tweed pieces, the show moved into vibrant territory with shades of pink and green continuing throughout. Kale was inspired by dinner napkins, which he translated by folding organza and incorporating arty smudges to mimic stains. Creating the prints through a series of fabric manipulations, Kale’s incorporation of painterly prints echoes the same trend seen on runways internationally for both spring and fall.

Mikhael Kale Spring 2014: The designer kicks off Toronto Fashion Week with 21 vibrant, geometric looks

Mikhael Kale debuted his ultra sleek Spring 2014 collection in a mid-renovation loft in Toronto’s east side on Friday night. Launching the Spring 2014 season of World Mastercard Fashion Week a few days early, the Toronto-based designer celebrated the female silhouette through cut outs, shadows and hues that demonstrated a great eye for detail.
Powder blue leather commingled with a textured and distressed orange knit set the tone for 21 pieces inspired by geometrical renderings. From colour-saturated suedes and a seafoam green moto jacket, the collection moved on to a pale lavender leather mini dress with a plunging neckline. Layered fabrics subtly printed with varying forest greens, greys and gold, showed a softer feminine character from the strong-featured leathers. The jaw dropper of the show came in the form of a gold leather midi-skirt and jacket combo. The metallic look styled with six inch heels and slicked back hair made for one badass femme. A futuristic black leather two-piece was the perfect finale to the show.

In ode to the art-inspired clothes that took to his art-inspired Spring 2013 collection earlier this week, Mikhael Kale’s latest show was granted special access to the usually un-bookable Corkin Gallery in Toronto’s East end Distillery District. The exclusive setting is also the current home to the Nigel Scott’s “Conversations with Blue” exhibit that inspired the collection. Not the first art-meet-cute for the two, Mikhael Kale and Nigel Scott collaborated on a special artistic project featured in our November issue.

TFW diary: Mikhael Kale and Mark Fast’s unlikely pairing
Last night, pre-fashion week continued with the unlikely pairing of Mikhael Kale and London-based Mark Fast taking over an even unlikelier spot: the new and un-finished Trump International. And we mean unfinished… we were even given hardhats upon entry! Opting to collaborate after meeting in Toronto last summer, the two designers showed their fall collections after a short panel discussion lead by Jeanne Beker. Similar only in their penchants for sex appeal, Kale opted for heavily slit skin-baring silk dresses adorned (and adorned) with floral appliques while Fast was busy leaving his signature webby dresses in the dust. A selection from the pieces he showed in London last month, Fast’s experiments with leather⎯in collaboration with Danier⎯and merino wool were truly sights for sore eyes.
