Your plus size guide to festival style: 3 looks with minimal cost, maximum appeal
While festival season continues through October, the last major stop on a music lover’s summer travel list will be Osheaga, the three-day music and arts jam hitting Montreal this weekend. And while the flower child meets-rock star girlfriend dress code has been set, we’re raising the bar on festival style with this plus size guide courtesy of our resident expert, Mo Handahu and her favourite source for all things unique: Value Village.
A haven for oversized, DIYable summer-ready pieces, Value Village, especially the men’s section, is a haven for festival style staples. With a little patience, you’ll find crop tops, knit vests, vintage tees and retro wash denim ready to be distressed.
To inspire you to hit the thrifting aisles, here are three looks that are street style ready for the festival circuit.

Your plus size guide to Spring 2014 trends: How to do crop tops, pastels and more!
After a slow start, it looks like spring is finally here. Months of ogling new arrivals has prepped us for taking the Spring 2014 trend plunge and while some (read: crop tops) seem made exclusively for those size zero girls, fear not: I’m here to teach you how to appropriate Spring 2014’s top trends for the plus size girl.
Since reawakening the drab wintery closet of a plus size girl may be limited as there aren’t as many on-trend offerings, it’s easy to get intimidated. And while your go-to retailer of extended sizes may not always have what you want, it takes a little ingenuity to scour the petite section for curvy-friendly pieces with a little give or the glorious two-way stretch. Before you go shopping, here’s some outfit inspiration on Spring 2014 trends for the girl with a little more.

Adele for Burberry? Rumour has it that the Brit singer will create a plus-sized capsule collection for the brand
British Vogue is reporting that singer Adele has been in talks with Burberry‘s creative director Christopher Bailey to collaborate on a line of plus-size clothing for the historic British brand. Although neither side has chosen to comment on the rumors, the songstress has apparently been asked to work on a “bespoke range for voluptuous customers.”

They said/We said: Full Figured Fashion Week moves to create equality in the market
The annual Full Figured Fashion Week may only be in its fourth cycle, but its message of empowerment is already abundantly clear.
“We need to stop with the marginalization. I’m not asking for couture, but I demand the right to go into any store and buy a simple black dress,” the event’s creator and former plus-size model Gwen DeVoe told WWD.
With the average woman’s dress size now sitting around a size 12–16, a huge portion of would-be shoppers have had to bypass size 00-12 retailers for years. But it’s not all bad news, at least not for the plus-size retail market: last year, they churned out a whopping $17 billion. In other words, curvy women are just as into clothes as their skinny counterparts.
“If you’re in this business for the sake of doing business, why are you excluding this entire community?” DeVoe asked. Fair enough!
The FFFW’s fourth year in the making marks quite a few firsts for the four-day-long event. Compared to its more modest first three showings, this year’s event was kick-started by an all-white sunset cruise Wednesday night. On the boat, the men got a nod in the Big and Tall male fashion show. Aside from runway shows later in the week featuring plus-size styles from designers like Jill Alexander and Ashley Stewart, the event has also organized blogger workshops, a runway show put on by Bloomingdale’s and shopping events.
Though there have been some recent instances in which the fashion industry has addressed size-related issues (including Vogue’s international health initiative and that scintillating Vogue Italia cover celebrating plus-size beauty), DeVoe has a point: many women are still finding it hard to shop for their body size, and as anyone who’s ever had a near-meltdown in a fitting room can attest to, that can be both demoralizing and infuriating. Anything to make the industry more inclusive is all right by us!

They said/We said: Mary Katrantzou breaks the size barrier by creating a larger range for Net-A-Porter
Mary Katrantzou has yet to disappoint us: not only has her much-anticipated collaboration with Topshop already sold out in Europe and the U.S. (have no fear, it launches in Toronto on Tuesday!), but now she plans to create her trademark, surreal-print garms in larger sizes for Net-A-Porter.
Being full-figured herself, the designer is no stranger to feeling alienated in an industry that caters to petites. And so it comes as no surprise that she jumped on board when the luxe online shop asked her to produce plus-size attire.
“I was looking at a size 14 woman wearing our dress and I thought, ‘I can’t believe we don’t go bigger than that size!’ because she looked tiny. […] I buy online—I think as a bigger size, you feel more comfortable trying things at home,” she told the Evening Standard.
The clothes will go up to U.K. size 16 (the equivalent of a U.S. size 12), and while the bold prints may seem hard to pull off, the incredible figure-flattering silhouettes and refined structure will make wearing a kaleidoscopic garden a breeze.
Katrantzou and Net-A-Porter have certainly taken the ropes to create a path for plus-size fashion and we can only hope that other designers and retailers will follow suit. You should never have to compromise style because of a number on a label.

They said/We said: American Apparel’s plus-size model search winner has been stripped of her title for making fun of the brand
Never far from controversy, clothing company American Apparel is in the news again after a plus-size-model search gone awry. Recently, they launched a contest to find “booty-ful,” “XLent” girls 18+ “with a little extra wiggle room where it counts” to model their new, larger sizes in basic styles. Nancy Upton, being “super ooged out by American Apparel in the past,” decided to poke a little fun at the company, and sent in pictures that she thought were equally as condescending and mocking as the search itself.
These pictures include Upton in the following scenarios: posing naked, in the position of a pig on a spit, with an apple in her mouth; bathing in ranch dressing; splayed on the kitchen floor, guzzling chocolate syrup; and fully clothed, old Hollywood—glamour style, in a pool, shoving a roasted chicken into her mouth.
Upton won the contest by an overwhelmingly popular vote but received a letter yesterday from creative director of American Apparel Iris Alonso, scolding her for her pictures and her attitude. Alonso, for some reason, also sent her snippy letter to various media sources, essentially giving the press another reason to prey on the company’s practices.
It’s a shame that your project attempts to discredit the positive intentions of our challenge based on your personal distaste for our use of light-hearted language, and that “bootylicous” was too much for you to handle. While we may be a bit TOO inspired by Beyoncé, and do have a tendency to occasionally go pun-crazy, we try not to take ourselves too seriously around here. I wonder if you had taken just a moment to imagine that this campaign could actually be well intentioned, and that my team and I are not out to offend and insult women, would you have still behaved in the same way, mocking the confident and excited participants who put themselves out there?
Turns out that although she won the contest, Upton will not be used to model the clothes, which doesn’t seem like something she wanted to do anyway. After reading extensively on this story we are hungry and exhausted, and even more weary of AA’s business practices.

They said/We said: The weight debate continues with the debut of TLC’s new series
Big Sexy, a new three-part reality series based around the burgeoning careers of five plus-size models in New York City, premieres tonight on TLC. With the tagline “Once you go big, you don’t go twig,” the show is getting all kinds of positive attention as well as negative vibes. While supporters hail it as the perfect vehicle to give big women their due, others have accused the show of encouraging obesity. Either way, the plus-size topic is again making waves. To boot, American Apparel just launched a plus-size model search, The Next Big Thing, to find models for their newly expanded size range (the brand is only now offering its clothes in XL). Ironically, as most would attest, the brand’s notoriously teeny sizes favour a slender figure so therefore a XL hardly qualify as plus-size.
