Les Parfums Louis Vuitton Pop-Up Lands At Yorkdale Mall
Everyday, the staff of Louis Vuitton at Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall check to make sure the recently opened fragrance pop-up is structurally sound. The reason for their concern: it’s constructed entirely of paper tube fragrance packaging containers, 2996 to be exact. But given that the pop-up has already traveled from Las Vegas, Miami and Houston, it’s […]

Yorkdale turns 50! A vintage look back at the mall’s fun fashion history
See the vintage Yorkdale images »
Within Toronto’s ever-changing retail landscape (hello Saks, goodbye Sears!), one shopping titan reigns supreme. Yorkdale Shopping Centre has been at the forefront, launching first-in-Canada boutiques by brands such as Mulberry, David Yurman, Kate Spade and soon, Nordstrom. But did you know that the mall was also the city’s first? Toronto’s purveyor of fancy duds to the north is turning 50 this week. Fun fact: it even predates the CN Tower and the Eaton Centre.
Built in 1964, Yorkdale was, at the time, the largest indoor shopping centre in the world. Going through something of a renaissance recently, thanks to a hefty facelift, Yorkdale has become the destination for designer labels and American retailers. Despite the cosmetic changes over the years, there are a few things that remain—Holt Renfrew and Fairweather have been at Yorkdale since the opening fifty years ago.

Inside Toronto’s newest J.Crew: The full details on the brand’s new unisex Eaton Centre outpost
Check out the photos of J.Crew Eaton Centre
For the first time in Toronto, men can shop at J.Crew. After the exclusion of the men’s line (much to shoppers dismay) at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, the newest J.Crew outpost in the Toronto Eaton Centre features all that the company has to offer.
The iconic American brand has settled in to a 9,000 square foot space in the on the third floor (formerly Bebe), and has filled the space with blonde hardwood and knick-knacks. Mannequins dressed in multi-layered outfits (think preppy collars poking out from underneath brightly-hued cashmere sweaters, crossbody bags and jeweled necklaces slung with ease) showcase what J.Crew does best.

They said/We said: Mary Katrantzou breaks the size barrier by creating a larger range for Net-A-Porter
Mary Katrantzou has yet to disappoint us: not only has her much-anticipated collaboration with Topshop already sold out in Europe and the U.S. (have no fear, it launches in Toronto on Tuesday!), but now she plans to create her trademark, surreal-print garms in larger sizes for Net-A-Porter.
Being full-figured herself, the designer is no stranger to feeling alienated in an industry that caters to petites. And so it comes as no surprise that she jumped on board when the luxe online shop asked her to produce plus-size attire.
“I was looking at a size 14 woman wearing our dress and I thought, ‘I can’t believe we don’t go bigger than that size!’ because she looked tiny. […] I buy online—I think as a bigger size, you feel more comfortable trying things at home,” she told the Evening Standard.
The clothes will go up to U.K. size 16 (the equivalent of a U.S. size 12), and while the bold prints may seem hard to pull off, the incredible figure-flattering silhouettes and refined structure will make wearing a kaleidoscopic garden a breeze.
Katrantzou and Net-A-Porter have certainly taken the ropes to create a path for plus-size fashion and we can only hope that other designers and retailers will follow suit. You should never have to compromise style because of a number on a label.
