Inside the Bata Shoe Museum’s Roger Vivier retrospective opening party: Champagne flutes and many a pilgrim buckle
Last night, Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum opened its latest exhibit, a retrospective of Parisian shoe designer Roger Vivier, with a glittering fête complete with champagne flutes and many a pilgrim buckle. The exhibit follows the designer’s career from his couture-style creations for Christian Dior in the 1950s to his legendary pilgrim-buckle flats made famous by the likes of Catherine Deneuve in the swinging ‘60s and beyond. Italian-born designer Bruno Frisoni, who helms the label in the present day, was there to toast to the exhibit, alongside our editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra (donning—what else?—pilgrim-buckled silver flats), Alexandra Weston, Jeanne Beker, Marilyn Denis and the museum’s grand dame, Sonja Bata, whose star shone brighter than ever with her lively opening remarks.

Game on: 4 steps on how to wear Spring’s sport utility trend
The race is on to find this season’s most sleek, athletic-inspired pieces. “Sport was touched on in almost every collection,” says Nicholas Mellamphy, creative director of The Room at the Bay. He points to Anthony Vaccarello’s use of tech fabrics and utility details, Antonio Berardi’s strong colour and stripe detailing, Yves Saint Laurent’s “sporty but elegant” eveningwear jumpsuits and J. Mendel’s play on the old-school sports jersey. The question is: Can sporty wear be made office-appropriate? Mellamphy laces up to give us a pep talk.

PFW diary: Welcome to the jungle at Hussein Chalayan, Roland Mouret, Vionnet, Roger Vivier, and Lanvin
Finding your seat at a Paris fashion show can sometimes pose un problème: some spaces are as dark as haunted houses (Hussein Chalayan) while others are so tiny that introductions often aren’t necessary before making body contact (Carven). Finding my seat at Roland Mouret proved to be a rather glam experience; the ornate ballroom in L’Hôtel Westin is the perfect place to rise and shine. It’s like freshly squeezed OJ served in a gilded chalice. The show was very Parisienne chic (tailored cropped jackets paired with body skimming pencil skirts, flirty ruffles, the perfect cap sleeved shift dress in several shades of blue, sexy peek-a-boo accents on hemlines and playful sartorial accents like the not-so evil eyes) though there was one surprising models-they’re-just-like-us moment: the cone-heeled shoes squeaked with every step.

PFW diary: ‘80s poofs at Lanvin, shoe heaven at Sergio Rossi, Hogan and Roger Vivier
Sometimes you look and something coming down the runway and just think, “Huh?”
That happened last night at Lanvin when a black and white floral pouf dress appeared at Alber Elbaz’s fall 2011 show. As I watched the booted mini pass by, my next thought was “‘80s Wayne Clark”. Then, I noticed that the outfit was on Freja Beha Erichsen, and since designers tend to put their most important outfits on the better-known models, I wondered: should we to take this look as directional? Will we be seeing more poufy, oversized florals on the spring 2012 runway? Hmmm….

Catherine Deneuve is Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest star + front row mayhem caught on camera!
Jean Paul Gaultier always delivers entertainment in addition to standout clothes. But for his spring 2011 couture collection, he proved just how clever a showman he is.
His Rue Saint Martin headquarters was packed with heavy hitters: clients (including a young oil-type who was veiled and sabled to the floor) as well as high profile friends like model, Ines de la Fressange who wielded a peacock blue crocodile handbag, from the Roger Vivier collection she is ambassadress for, no doubt.
But what really sent the paparazzi into a tizzy was the double-whammy of Catherine Deneuve and director Pedro Almodovar, who were encouraged to nuzzle in their front row seats, guaranteeing that everyone walked away with a money shot.

Celeb poll: Carey Mulligan wears brilliant red. Do you like her look?
Carey Mulligan joined Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Roberts at the 2010 British Independent Film Awards yesterday in England. The rising British actress wore a bright red Prabal Gurung dress with corsage detailing on the bust which she paired with an embellished Roger Vivier clutch and Brian Atwood peep-toe pumps. Mulligan is known for sizzling on the red carpet in stylish yet demure dresses, did she succeed this time? Let your voice be heard after the jump.

Paris: Sophia Kokosalaki, Jean Paul Gaultier and Roger Vivier Fall 2009
I suppose there could be worse jobs in the world than to have to start your day with a tour through the über-chic Roger Vivier showroom to get a sneak peek at fall’s treats. “Catherine” (as in Deneuve) asked Bruno (as in Frisoni, the Vivier designer) for a new ballet flat,” the PR rep tells me, “so he made her one!” (Hint: it has a pointy-toe with a slight platform). A deck of cards is the theme for the season, and I don’t want to give to much away, but I really heart it in spades.
