At some point this week it actually snowed in Toronto—huge fluffy flakes!—and the snow globe-like atmosphere instantly became Nail Corner inspiration. I’ve been dreaming of opaque white glitter for a few months now, but after going down a rabbit hole of searching for such a polish, it seems it’s a mix that’s nearly impossible to acquire. So nail art, paired with two of my all-time-favourite glitters, seemed like an appropriate substitute. (For now, that is!)

You would think Avril Lavigne has her hands full with her music, her Abbey Dawn clothing line, and her boy toy, Brody Jenner, but the 27 year old just announced another project: a deal with beauty giant Sally Hansen to produce a limited edition Salon Effects Nail Strips collection this spring.

This week on Nail Corner, we feature two designs that make clever use of manicure guide stickers—a half-moon mani and a tone-on-tone diagonal stripe. This week in Nail Corner, we’re bringing you glitter in three ways: as an accent, in an artistic design, and in a whole new format. The holiday season is always a great excuse for wearing glitter polish non-stop, especially since almost all the brands include a few glitters in their holiday collections. It also takes the stress out of matching your attire to your manicure—glitter is, in a way, somewhat neutral. (We’re not the only ones who pick an outfit based on our polish, right?) And don’t let the difficulty of removing it get you down: we have a solution. The matte magenta mouths at Prabal Gurung were gorgeous at first glance, but look a little closer, and they were blackened in the center. Since the designer was inspired by Japanese photographer Araki’s shots of exotic blooms (as well as aggressive-looking nudies, we just discovered while Googling him), he asked makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury to create the illusion of “this orchid that was sort of coming out of the lips.” To do that, she used M.A.C. Pro Process Magenta Chromagraphic Pencil to slightly overdraw the lips “like they’ve been kissing,” while MAC Pro Pigments in “Burgundy,” “Fuschia,” and “Black” provided the slightly ombre effect to mimic the flower. Cheekbones were contoured for “slight definition and structure” with cream bronzer. Next, silver grey shadow was stroked across the sockets of the eyes, and Strobe Cream was added on top for a gleam. To create highlights, Luna Cream Color Base was blended in a C shape around the temple and eyes and a lick of mascara and gelled up brows finished the look. On nails, Jin Soon Choi used Sally Hansen’s “Loves Me Not,” a dark purple with subtle glitter, as the main tone “to make a strong statement” edged by “Lacy Lilac” “to show a soft side.”
