Cruise diary: Floating in Le Cap d’Antibes with Chanel (and Karl, Carine, Alexa and Freja)
By Laura deCarufel
It was always going to be major, the kind of major that connotes italics and inspires emails with the subject line “OMG”—or, more accurately, “Oh mon Dieu.” Last night’s Chanel Cruise 2012 show was a heavenly—and très French—affair.
For starters, the location: The fabled Hotel du Cap Eden Roc, perched on a cliff in the south of France, has the vibe of a continental Gatsby mansion, complete with cream hue, palm trees, and a pathway-cum-runway leading from the terraced steps down to a rock wall overlooking an infinity pool.
Tables with striped umbrellas were set up along the runway so that everyone had a front row seat. Waiting for the show to begin, I sipped chilled Perrier-Jouet and watched the other guests smoke and double-kiss. Most of them were wearing Chanel, and all of them were wearing it differently. A French reporter dressed up a pair of jeans with a black lace dress accessorized only with a cigarette. Princess Caroline of Monaco chose a monochromatic ivory look (satin blouse and trousers), while screen stars Anna Mouglalis and Vanessa Paradis were chic in classic black.

Music festival style snaps: Coachella
The stylish set hit the desert this past weekend for Coachella, the three-day celebration of hot new bands in the California sun. In and amongst a huge crowd rocking out to the likes of Kanye West, Interpol, The Strokes and The Arcade Fire, Toronto gal Lauren Baker (owner and curator of one of the city’s most beloved designer consignment and vintage stores, LAB Consignment) was snapping photos of some of the cutest guys and gals, including a one Miss Alexa Chung.

Toronto shop notes: The oxford
Blame it on It girl Alexa Chung, but oxford shoes have stepped onto the footwear scene in a big way.

Red carpet round-up: Plenty of quirk and black dresses at the British Fashion Awards
The British Fashion Awards were handed out last night at the Savoy in London. (Check out the winners here.) The red carpet scene was one of the more enjoyable we’ve seen in a while–even the sea of black dresses gave us something interesting. Standouts were Alexa Chung, who paired prim Chanel with a biker jacket, and Lara Stone doing her best Diane Kruger in a minimalist Calvin Klein sheath. See the rest of the red carpet–with Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon, Thandie Newton, Daphne Guinness and more, after the jump.

Celeb vote: Alexa Chung does demure. Do you like her look?
Last night, Alexa Chung walked the red carpet for the Love & Other Drugs premiere in New York City. The former MTV television host wore a garden party–floral Valentino dress with a pair of Louis Vuitton low-heel pumps. Do you like her look? Vote after the jump.

Celeb vote: Who was best dressed at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards?
Last night, menswear designer Billy Reid was awarded the US$300,000 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize and the fashion firmament was there–from Kim Kardashian to Karl Lagerfeld and every socialite, starlet, stylist and designer that exists in that rather considerable chasm between. We picked some of our favourite looks of the night and threw in a few outliers because, frankly, the young starlet uniform of a short dress and booties is starting to get a little boring. Who do you think was best dressed? (If you need a better view, there’s a full gallery after the jump.)

Fashion news: McQueen label to carry on, models-turn-DJs, Anna Wintour abandons the Diesel show, and more
One week after the news of Alexander McQueen‘s suicide, the Gucci Group confirmed that the designer’s label will continue. GG President and CEO Robert Polet said, “We believe in the future of the brand…Lee was very proud of the people working in his company, and so am I.” [Vogue UK]
Meanwhile the British Fashion Council will pay tribute to McQueen at London Fashion Week, setting up a wall in the main tent where guests can pin notes written to the designer and his family. Dispatch from London: Dancing with the stars at Burberry
In New York, celebrities and other pretty young things are given the ultimate VIP treatment (think private areas at nightclubs and concerts, and multiple security guard escorts before and after fashion shows). As I look around me at the Burberry Prorsum after party, held at Burberry headquarters on Horseferry Road, I realize that is not quite the case in London. To my left? Mary-Kate Olsen. To my right? Emma Watson, the face of Burberry’s fall/winter ad campaign. Yes, we are all bouncing around together to the music of The Kooks, who have arrived to do a live set (the lead singer makes sure to thank “Christopher.” Could that be Christopher Bailey, I wonder?!).

Fashion news: Anna is not amused, Tom Ford looking for funding, Lara Stone apparently tired of being so “fat”
Anna Wintour looked displeased at being seated front row next to Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof at the Twenty8Twelve show. The girls garnered attention, hugging and fawning over one another, while the famed editor looked unamused in every shot, hiding behind her oversized dark sunglasses. The camera never lies, and in this case, it failed to hide Ms. Wintour’s obvious disdain. [Daily Mail]
Nordstrom is launching a line of Twilight clothing that will hit stores in a few weeks. Eager to take a stab at sporting the New Moon ensembles? MTV will be hosting a sneak peek at the collection in what they are calling “Twilight Fashion Week.” The Twilighter tees will broadcast support for either ‘Team Edward’ or ‘Team Jacob,’ since, of course, we’re all dying to know.
