MTV’s House of Style is back! But who will replace Cindy and Naomi?
In a bygone time, supermodels ruled the world, walking pack-like down a Versace runway or gathering en masse in front of Peter Lindbergh’s lens. Alone they were already unstoppable, but these Amazon women were also friends, a supermodel gang that had the world watching their every move. This supermodel-obsessed era was known as the ‘90s, and the true archeological evidence of this time was a show known as House of Style. In some of the most amazing news we’ve heard all week, MTV has just today announced the cult favourite will be returning in October, this time as a more digitally based series with lots of social media crossover.
Running from 1989 to 1999, the show’s 72 episodes not only captured the enormous power these women had at the time (in one episode, longtime host Cindy Crawford talks about how she once killed time trying to figure out how much money she made per minute) but the behind-the-scenes goings-on of their lives and of the fashion industry as a whole. The show took these seemingly untouchable beauties and made them a bit more real. Case in point: Naomi Campbell unabashedly applying zit cream on-camera.

Pouty and poutier: Blake Lively and Lana Del Rey both land major campaign deals
In two big announcements today, Blake Lively and Lana Del Rey have inked major deals that will undoubtedly send their respective It girl status into overdrive. Blake Lively, whose friendship with Karl Lagerfeld and romance with Ryan Reynolds is enough to induce jealousy, has added another entry to her list of fashion accolades—she’ll be the […]

Nail Corner: Do like Alexa Chung and Sally Singer! Here’s 2 takes on the all-seeing eye manicure
This week, all eyes are on Nail Corner—or actually, Nail Corner is all over the eyes. Ever since Sophy Robson did Egyptian all-seeing eyes for Topshop’s Spring 2012 show, painted eyeballs have been popping up in the most curious places. Alexa Chung showed off an evil eye manicure while front row at Jason Wu‘s Fall 2012 show—and has since tweeted other variations of the design. Just last week Emily Weiss from Into the Gloss shared a look at Sally Singer‘s nails, complete with pretty lashes and glittered tips. While it may seem like an unusual design, we promise: once you paint an eyeball or two on your nails, you’ll never want to do a regular manicure again.

TFW Diary: Jean-Pierre Braganza brings his brand of East London edge to Toronto
View the full collection »
See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »The ShOws were created to bring back talented expat Canadian designers showing overseas, and London-based Jean-Pierre Braganza is a fine example of a local boy doing good—he’s part of the just-announced Alexa Chung–fronted British Designers Collective for 2012, which means he’ll be retailing his wares in a six-week pop-up shop in Britain’s Bicester Village shopping centre alongside Preen, Holly Fulton, and Erickson Beamon. Toronto got an up-close look at his black, grey and plum and lilac fall collection last night, with its sharp-fitting pencil dresses with slashes of block colour or digi prints, wild patterned knits and voluminous, Westwood-ish bustled skirts.

Music festival style snaps: SXSW 2012
View our SXSW style snaps »
Catch up with last year’s music festival coverage »While we’ve been busy with all things Canadian fashion for the last few weeks, our friends south of the border have been living it up in the Austin sun for the two-week-long South by Southwest (SXSW) film, interactive, and music festival. While everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Jay-Z (!!!) to Sleigh Bells took to the stage, the stylin’ gals filled out the parties and the crowds in full force, including one Miss Alexa Chung, whom we snapped at the Spin magazine party in a rad metallic skirt, and two of the most babe-ular musicians, Margaux & Charly (they play violin and viola respectively), on bikes. Toronto-born and currently Austin-based writer and all around cool chick Lia Parsley was there to catch all the fashion action. And here, we bring you the best snaps!

LFW Diary: More brilliant showings from Peter Pilotto, Burberry, and Christopher Kane. Plus, Kanye shows up front row at Mark Fast!
It brings a tear to my eye that London Fashion Week is almost all over for another season—but my feet are not-so-silently rejoicing. A 9 a.m. start at Peter Pilotto meant leaving the house just past 8 this morning, but it was worth it. The Topshop venue, which is the old Billingsgate Market this season, always serves up coffee, tea, and all sorts of yummy dishes (yesterday there was a creamy soup with truffle oil; today there was porridge for breakfast); there’s also the NewGen pop-up where I scored the Erdem tank with a blue porcelain print and white lace collar and the Mary Katrantzou floral tee. Breakfast, shopping, and a show? Every day, please.

Lana Del Rey’s a model now! Are you surprised?
Coming as a shock to no one, or at least not us, Lana Del Rey‘s face (and bod) has been signed with Next Models. Joining a roster shared by the likes of Karlie Kloss, Alexa Chung, and Arizona Muse, the agency will likely be handling all of her upcoming campaigns. Whilst we’ve only been able […]

Vote! Who takes the cake for best dressed designer/muse duo at the British Fashion Awards?
Some of our favourite fashion talents were celebrated last night at the 2011 British Fashion Awards in London, with Sarah Burton, Mary Katrantzou, and Charlotte Olympia (to name a few) coming out on top in their respective categories. As always, what everyone was wearing was equally top of our minds, and we’ve especially enjoyed these neat little red carpet photo combos of megawatt designer avec megawatt muse (or muse-come-designer in Victoria Beckham’s case). In one corner, we’ve got the bright-young-thing duo of Christopher Kane and Alexa Chung donning a look from his Spring 2012 collection, and with Charlotte Olympia kitten heels. In the other, you’ve got the black-on-black pairing of Marc Jacobs and Beckham in her own design (may we just say, Vicky’s looking less extreme than usual, and we like it) The always-cool McCartney and Moss duo triumph with Stella in a sexy-tomboy suit and Kate in all-over fishnet. So, who takes the cake for the best dressed duo?

Alexa Chung and Rachel Weisz’s new hairstyles are not bang on
Vote and tell us what you think! »
Alexa Chung and Rachel Weisz both showed off new hair this week: loose, piece-y bangs that hit below the brow line. Frankly, we’re not sure if the look works for either. While Chung is usually the queen of turning casualwear into pretty and polished, she looked rather frazzled at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. (However, she still won the British Style Award!) Actually, Chung’s makeup artist should take some of the blame. While “no makeup” is on trend, it still requires a solid base—by the end of the night, Chung’s dewy skin just looked washed out. And with the new messy bangs hiding her eyebrows, the rest of her features seem to fade away.

They said/We said: Kate Middleton snubbed by the British Fashion Council! As if!
Though fashion critics gushed over her wedding dress, thousands flocked to see it in real life, and pieces by designers like Erdem instantly sell out after she’s seen in them, Kate Middleton was overlooked by the British Fashion Council when they announced their shortlist for the 2011 British Style Icon award. As if!
Who was included? Alexa Chung, Lara Stone, Florence Welch, and Victoria Beckham. Sure all of these Brits have It-girl appeal, but none has the extensive coverage surrounding their every outfit as Kate. Outraged by the snub, Telegraph UK encouraged readers to vote on the BFC’s website to include Kate. As of post time, her die-hard fans have spoken and Kate is included in the shortlist.
Ironically, Harper’s Bazaar UK has published their Britain’s 10 best-dressed list today and who else is at the top of the list? Kate, natch. We’re not sure why the duchess was initially left out, but if royal watchers have anything to say about it, she’ll have the award in the bag.

Rules were meant to be broken: These celebs are teaching us how to be fashion rebels!
Old-school fashion rules are generally to our benefit. In a world of muffin tops and visible panty lines, they give us some Emily Post–like structure on how to flatter our bodies and look put together in the currently “anything goes” state of sartorial modernism. That being said there are some rules that just aren’t relevant anymore, limiting your wardrobe instead of making the most of it. Here, we learn from Hollywood’s finest that rules really are made to be broken.
