Snapped by Tommy Ton: “Think of your coat as a dress”
“Coats are a security blanket during the cold season, so investing in one that’s out of the ordinary is very important. Think of your coat as a dress—every day is your red carpet, so choose one that makes a statement. You can never go wrong with Dries Van Noten. This one is cut to be […]

How to wear your coat as a dress: 3 Style Panel tips for tackling this fashion week trend
In these desperate days of the Polar Vortex, there’s no denying the functionality of a coat. It’s pretty much the only way to get out alive, but in the world of fashion, it’s also become the latest way to create a statement. Whether it’s flung over the shoulders of chic editors or worn as the whole kit and caboodle via the latest trend—the coat as dress—it’s an essential.
On the runway, Christopher Bailey showcased the coat-as-dress look in his Spring 2014 for Burberry Prorsum, with soft shoulder pastel coats, which were worn with virtually nothing underneath. On the street, Hanneli Mustaparta was captured by Tommy Ton rocked the look in voluminous Calvin Klein. Another street style favourite, Anna Dello Russo, lives for coatdress as the perfect accessory for a pair of bare legs.
So, how do mere mortals pull off the coat as dress trend? 3 Style Panel members try it out! While both Becky Kung of Velvet & Vino and Alex of To Vogue or Bust attempt the bare leg look, we suggest discretion at this time of year. After all, there’s nothing less chic than wind burned appendages! Pairing a stocking with a great winter coat can be just as effective when you focus on the details like Barbara Ann Solomon, who added a punch of luxury with the addition of a fur collar to the look.
For more tips and info on how to rock the coat as dress trend take a cue from our Style Panel this week.

Stylish winter coats: Prep for the polar vortex with 13 ultra-warm picks
See our stylish winter coat picks »
It’s official. 2014 can now lay claim to the coldest day of the century. And while the frigid temperatures caught everyone off guard, the polar vortex will come again, if you can believe it. Layers upon layers of sweaters and scarves all piled under a bulky overcoat simply ain’t going to cut it anymore. You owe it to your closet, and to yourself, to invest in a quality stylish winter jacket. Consider us your winter wardrobe therapists.
One of the greatest winter conundrums of maintaining steez in the snow is how to find a unique coat that highlights your style. Lo and behold: the yearly challenge of finding a “not-completely-heinous-and-isn’t-a-black-hooded-fur-trimmed-parka-but-will-still-keep-you-toasty-warm” coat. We say: bring it on.

Street Style, Toronto: Fur, chunky scarves and hats keep the city’s trendsetters warm on the last day of fashion week
See all the street style looks »
It was a chilly last day of World Mastercard Fashion Week, which brought out the heavy style hitters in chunky knit scarves and all kinds of fur. Torontonians sure know how to add a little extra coverage without compromising that one last hoorah before hiding out for the winter months.
The colour of the day had to be black, ranging from head-to-toe incognito looks to pops of the hue showing up everywhere. Model Stacey McKenzie didn’t let the chill stop her from wearing a printed black and white mini showing off her long gams. Style Panel regular Nicole Wilson ended the week on a girly note with a black tulle skirt paired with an animal print blouse.

Fall 2013, Illustrated: Jamie Lee Reardin dreams up 5 of this season’s iconic looks

For the fashion-minded folk, fall is the time to go big or go home. It’s the time to fantasize about impossibly elegant wardrobes full of designer duds so delicious that they only exist in your dreams. We’re all about perpetuating fantasy, and today, we’re doing just that with the help of Los Angeles-based and Toronto-born illustrator Jamie Lee Reardin. Known for her leggy drawings of fashion icons for Moda Operandi, V Magazine and Dior Beauty, Reardin took her usual pencils to the next level by illustrating five of Fall 2013’s strongest looks using the insanely cool Windows app, Fresh Paint. The app, which we discovered on HP’s light as a feather Envy x2 tablet while on a trip to Stockholm with Windows earlier this year, allows you to paint on the screen, literally, with the use of sensor-induced paintbrush. It’s like using an oil canvas, but easier!

The list: Fiery accents set classic black-and-white houndstooth ablaze
See our editor’s houndstooth picks »
Black and white houndstooth is by no means a new trend in fashion—it gained mainstream popularity in the 1930s and has been modified many times over. For Fall 2012 designers have once again put their spin on the classic look and there are many houndstooth pieces that can be kicked up by simply adding red and gold accents.
Maisonette 1977’s form-fitting dress is not full-on houndstooth, but rather gives a hint of the pattern on the top and bottom in case you’re too nervous to go for the whole nine yards. However, for full-on houndstooth try the popular pattern on pants (like this pair by Melanie Lyne) or on a Jacob skirt. If you’re wearing houndstooth on the bottom, be sure to not do the same on top—break it up with a bold colour, like a red blouse from Equipment.
You can also add pops of colour with the accessories you choose to accent with. Red and black heels by Aquazzura will keep you completely on trend, or go small with jewellery. A red and gold ring by Kate Spade or some gold bracelets from Pandora will add just the right amount of colour, turning a classic outfit into something fiery and fresh.
