The Cannes report: Partygoing with Diane Kruger, Mia Wasikowska, Uma Thurman, Olivier Zahm, Clemence Poésy and more!
By Laura deCarufel
Here’s a fashion fan party trick: Determine how many pairs of white jeans Olivier Zahm owns. The Purple Fashion magazine editor-in-chief wore a slim-fitting pair at every major event I saw him at during Cannes: The Chanel Cruise 2012 after-party, where he snapped photos of Kristen McMenemy dancing on a chair, and then nuzzled with It Brit Poppy Delevigne; the Calvin Klein beach-side extravaganza, where he wore his sunglasses at night, sipping champagne near Uma Thurman and Rosario Dawson; and, of course, at the late-night piano bar, which Le Baron, the iconic Parisian nightclub, has taken over during the festival, and over which Zahm presided like hipster royalty.

Celeb poll: Vote for your favourite dress from the Met Gala!
The Met Gala, the annual celebration of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s summer Costume Institute exhibit, is loosely known as the Oscars of fashion. This year, models of the moment, editrixes, big-deal designers, as well as fashion-crowd approved pop stars and actresses flocked to the famed red steps in the name of Alexander McQueen, the subject of this years exhibit entitled Savage Beauty. While the designer’s famed creations didn’t dominate the carpet quite as we had hoped (but more on that later), there were lots of juicy bright hues (Zoe Saldana and Ginnifer Goodwin), ladylike lace (Rihanna, Taylor Swift), anything-but-basic black (Christina Ricci, Ashley Olsen, Stella McCartney), and plenty of glitzy gowns (Gwyneth Paltrow, Diane Kruger) to feast our eyes on.
As for our faves? We loved Diane in her up-to-there Jason Wu gown, and Liv Tyler in her breathtaking feathered Givenchy couture. And you?

NYFW party pics: Blake Lively, SJP and Claire Danes at the Chanel SoHo fete
What does one wear to a Chanel boutique re-opening party? Chanel, bien sur! Think gold chains by way of belt or bijoux, pearls (and lots of them, darling) and tweed anything. Oh, and keep that palette to a stark black and white. Throw in a camillia or two and you look, well…passable–especially in light of […]

FASHION editor frolics in the Chanel No. 5 meadows
With frequent email and twitter updates, we’ve been (jealously) following acting editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra play petanque with Diane Kruger, see Crystal Renn strut in Chanel’s 2011 Cruise collection and watch the debut of Karl Lagerfeld‘s Remember Now – all in St-Tropez. In her latest installation she’s moved on to the town of Grasse in the […]

Karl in purple, motorcycles, Crystal Renn and more from the Chanel cruise show
It’s the afternoon after the Chanel cruise show and the party animals are just beginning to stir.
In true St. Tropez form, Karl Lagerfeld threw a bash that went on into the wee hours, with free-flowing champagne, lots of Lady Gaga on the soundtrack, and models in full celebration mode (and flats) to fête Chanel makeup creative director Peter Phillips‘ birthday.

Diane Kruger beats our editor at petanque!
Call it the Chanel invasion of St. Tropez. Hundreds of models, fashion editors and Chanel groupies have descended on this chic port town for the unveiling of the Chanel Cruise collection.
Last night guests battled it out in a petanque tournament [Ed: basically lawn bowling played on gravel] in the main square, Place des Lice, that followed a screening of a short film by Karl Lagerfeld.

Red carpet round table: The best and the worst of the Met Gala
Now that fashion week, the Globes and the Oscars are all done, we’ve been starved for serious red carpet action for the past couple of months. Last night’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala in New York at least promised to give us fodder for red carpet punditry. The theme was American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity–the exhibit currently on at the Met’s Costume Institute and the most awaited guest of the evening was the American fashion force Lady Gaga. She didn’t show up on the red carpet and the result was a mostly-expected line-up of dresses. (Though even Gaga wore an Armani bodysuit that was near-identical to the one she wore at the Oscars, so yawn.) Diane Kruger’s blazingly white Calvin Klein was the clear winner of the evening, but Gap’s “collaborations” with Rodarte, Sophie Theallet, Thakoon and Alexander Wang were an almost universal disappointment.
After the jump, features director Leah Rumack, fashion market editor Sarah Casselman and I dish on the best, the worst and the most, um, interesting ensembles of the night.

Fashion news: Marc and Lorenzo still together, former Hermès CEO dies and memories of clogs
When it comes to fashion’s item, we can all breathe a sigh of relief: Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone are still a couple. Rumours were rampant of a break up, but the two recently attended tattoo artist Scott Campbell’s art show opening beaming, hand-in-hand. “They were talking about coming in and getting something together,” said Campbell of the duo. [The Cut]
It’s a busy day for new faces on fragrance campaigns: German actress/international superstar Diane Kruger will front Calvin Klein’s newest scent. Meanwhile, Lancôme is doing out with the old and in with the new by replacing Kate Winslet with Penelope Cruz as the face of Trésor. [Fashionista]
When she isn’t cooing audiences with her country/pop hits or having acceptance speeches interrupted by Kanye West, Taylor Swift is off signing up to appear in ads for Cover Girl’s new line of luxury products scheduled to debut January 2011.
