So what does a spokesperson/actress/TV host/social activist carry with her on a day-to-day basis? Daily affirmation cards, three pairs of glasses and one very necessary iPad, to start! Curious? Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Coral lips that are more than matte at Joe Fresh

The look:
Grace Lee, Maybelline New York’s lead makeup artist: “Joe Fresh is known for that really fresh colour. [Joe Mimran] told me that because there’s a lot of whites and metallics for spring he wanted to do a poppy colour. [The lipstick] is petty much that perfect, perfect coral.”Jorge Joao, Redken lead stylist: “We created a low ponytail and released some of the slack to have it droop a little bit, to give it a vintage feel. And from there we added a little bit of texture on the side, to make it more ‘now’ and to give it something fresh and urban.”
Top tips:
– The Joe Fresh Spring 2013 look takes the matte lip to the next level. With direction to make it look “like the girls had been in their lipstick all day long,” Grace Lee brushed translucent powder around the lip line after applying Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids lipstick in “Vibrant Mandarin,” which helped to diffuse the colour and give it that worn-in look. “We wanted to make it look almost like chalk,” she explained. -
Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: A twisted hair and modern take on ’70s makeup at Jeremy Laing

While the details on Jeremy Laing’s Spring 2013 collection echoed the ’90s, the beauty was tinged with elements from the ’70s. “Jeremy wanted the girls to look really handsome and sort of have this ’70s-eqsue feeling,” explained Greg Wencel, Cover Girl makeup pro. Also at play was a mix of textures: glossy eyelids contrasted with matte skin, which had been prepped with Cover Girl + Olay Simply Ageless Serum Primer ($18, well.ca) to keep shine at a minimum. Instead of eyeshadow, Wencel used Cover Girl Cheekers blush in “Iced Cappuccino” and “smoked it out on the eye and under the eye socket.” He then used the same blush to sculpt a high cheek bone but diffused it for a soft, modern effect. Because lashes and brows were left bare Wencel added some dimension to the eye with Cover Girl LiquilineBlast in “Brown Blaze” ($10, well.ca), but applied it by putting the product on the back of his hand and picking up some of the pigment with a fluffy brush. The final step was glossing up the eye with a dab of clear Cover Girl WetSlicks lip gloss ($7, well.ca) for what Wencel called “a ’70s high gloss shine.”

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: It’s all about aerodynamic hair and makeup at Sid Neigum

“It’s more about a mood than a theme,” said M.A.C makeup key Melissa Gibson of the beauty look for Sid Neigum’s Spring 2013 show. Featuring a strong eyebrow, smoky eyes and matte skin, Gibson referenced Helmut Newton and “Cindy Crawford in the ’90s” as inspiration. “It’s not just a heavy black smoky eye…there’s an edge to it, the fleck of grey metallic in there brightens it up for spring and summer.” To build this graphic-yet-soft look, she used a mix of three M.A.C eyeshadows–“Carbon,” “Print” and “Typographic” ($18 each, maccosmetics.com)—diffusing the pigment across the eye and blending out any straight lines. Fluidline eyeliner in “Blacktrack” ($18, maccosmetics.com) was also diffused at the lashline and lashes were curled and given two coats of mascara for extra drama. But it was two winged-out lines across the brows that completed the look, which was a last minute addition from Gibson: “At the end I threw on that eyebrow and that did it!”

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Dewy, metallic skin and crimped Venice Beach hair at Chloé Comme Parris

It was dewy skin like we’ve never seen before for Chloé Comme Parris Spring 2013, where the theme was California’s Venice Beach and models looked like they’d just emerged from the water. “It’s all about layering different kinds of textures to create this really beautiful, metallic skin,” explained M.A.C makeup key Melissa Gibson. To start, she used M.A.C Cosmetics Mineralize Charged Water Face and Body Lotion ($40, maccosmetics.com) followed by Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer ($22, maccosmetics.com)—though dabbed only where necessary. The almost supernatural glow, however, came courtesy of Mineralize Skinfinish in “Soft and Gentle” ($34, maccosmetics.com) which Gibson generously applied with a brush “literally all over the face.”

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Double braids and graphic blue liner at Jean-Pierre Braganza

If you’ve been working on your braiding skills, good news! The popularity of plaits will continue through Spring 2013—however the variation shown at Jean-Pierre Braganza brings a whole new level of complexity to the style. Featuring a stark middle part and two braids—one interior, one exterior—the double look was described as “pretty, but weird at the same time” by Pantene Pro-V consulting stylist Justin German. After prepping the hair with Pantene Pro-V Normal to Thick Straighten and Smooth Crème ($6, at drugstores) he separated a section of hair at the crown for the interior cornrow braid, which ran down the back of the head.

Lindsay Lohan is attempting to be a redhead again
Photography by Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic Sometimes it seems that nothing can ever go right in Lindsay Lohan’s life. Whether it’s a night out that turns into a screaming match with her mom (featuring an appearance from the police) or a seemingly simple trip to the hair salon that ends with her the wrong shade of red, things aren’t always easy for Lilo.
The star of Liz & Dick (which we’re actually excited to see) walked the red carpet at the Mr. Pink Ginseng Drink launch party last night and debuted a new and extremely uneven dye job. After being a strawberry blonde for most the summer, the actress/singer/paparazzi’s #1 gal showed off a deep auburn colour with an accidental ombré effect. Her roots show a tinge of deep-purple, the middle is washed-out and the ends seem to be doing their own fiery red thing.

Jennifer Aniston announced as co-owner of Living Proof hair care
Photography courtesy Noel Federizo/Living Proof Jennifer Aniston’s hair played a leading role in the ’90s, inspiring women everywhere to ask stylists for “the Rachel” and today it was announced she’s taking on a leading role with hair care company, Living Proof.
Aside from being the face of the brand, Jennifer Aniston has also invested in the company as a co-owner—a move that will give her some say in the products that Living Proof develops. The Boston-based company prides itself on scientific innovations for hair care and beauty products, and considering that they keep scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on staff, it’s not shocking that their frizz-defying Nourishing Styling Cream is a cult favourite.

Do Britney Spears’ and Christina Aguilera’s matching rainbow dip-dye hairstyles signal the return of their pop star rivalry?
Left: Photography by Isaac Brekken/Getty Images Watch Christina Aguilera’s new music video! »
We should have known there was more to those rainbow highlights than a desire to be on trend! Britney Spears, who’s no stranger to communicating through the state of her hair, debuted turquoise and pink dip-dyed tips this weekend for an appearance at the iHeart Radio music festival. Aside from the fact that she hasn’t changed her hair colour in a few years (which, for Britney, is a very good thing) we didn’t think anything of it—until the video for Christina Aguilera‘s new single “Your Body” debuted this afternoon. You guessed it: Christina has the exactly same rainbow dip-dye style.

Later, Balenciaga blonde. This season’s power hair colour is brunette
Brunettes overshadowed the Fall 2012 runways. Celia Ellenberg reports on the power colour.

For two full seasons, Guido Palau made an indelible mark on the backstage beauty game by dyeing models’ hair a frothy colour often described as “Balenciaga blonde” because of its prevalence on Nicolas Ghesquière’s runway. But last September in Paris, the Redken creative consultant shocked the show-going set with some black magic—make that brown magic—by taking a previously platinum Kasia Struss to a warm shade of chocolate. “She just looks tougher with brown hair,” he said at the time.
