NYFW diary: Back-to-back-to-back with Tory Burch, J.Crew, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, and more!
Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012, Photography by Peter Stigter From the prim to awesomely improper, yesterday at New York fashion week was another dizzying day of back-to-back-to-back shows. Let’s drill it down:
The liner notes at Tory Burch’s show yesterday referenced a proper girl who’s come undone by falling in love with the wrong sort of guy. Well, it might have been wrong for the girl, but on the runway it was very, very right. Self confessed, I’ve never prayed to the Burch alter, but the designer’s beautiful Fall collection might just have me changing my tune. Featuring pencil skirts, lacey dresses in wine, emerald, navy, and dusty rose, and some of the loveliest floral appliques and pearl details on done-up cardigans, the collection entered Carey Mulligan territory.

5 minutes and 5 news nuggets (New stores! A Manolo Blahnik collab!) with J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons and Tom Mora
Photography by Dario Cantatore/Getty Images Early yesterday at the jam-packed J.Crew Fall presentation, I got a peek at what the mega brand was planning. In and amongst the delicious layered, multicoloured looks, I found out some little newsy nuggets that I’m sure you will be thrilled about:
1. J.Crew will open three new Canadian locations in 2012: Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto Eaton Centre, all three of which will carry both womenswear and menswear. There will also be a specialty menswear shop coming down the pipe.

We’re celebrating National Sweater Day with 6 picks to don today (but before you check ’em out, watch a granny tell you to!)
Today, the WWF is teaming up with grannies nationwide for National Sweater Day—a day to raise awareness about energy conservation. Led by spokesgranny Gladys, in her poinsettia-patterned knit, the campaign is meant to persuade the thermostat-inclined (guilty as charged) to don a sweater and turn down the heat. As Gladys says, grannies are “natural energy conservers” who put on a sweater when they get cold. And as we learn in the hilarious campaign video, you can sign up to receive a phone call from an on-staff granny who will nag gently remind you (as grannies do) to turn down the heat. We’ve picked our favourite knits to help you conserve energy for the day.

Relationships (or lack thereof) come in all forms during 365 days of the year, and especially on this one, so we’d like to present our non-average gift guide for all those loves you might have, be it a boyfriend, a friend, or that person you just want to say ‘sup to.

Mix ‘n’ match to holiday perfection with J.Crew’s new V.P of womenswear’s top 5 festive picks!
As most of us can attest, our holiday budget has already been just about blown on treats, gifts, and the like. To help us eliminate the unnecessary glitz of tempting holiday displays and whittle our festive wardrobe down to the essentials, we turned to J.Crew’s newly appointed V.P of womenswear, Tom Mora. “It’s a great season for colour right now, and I think that we do it in our own J.Crew way,” he said during a recent stop in Toronto. What you can expect to see down the pipe? It is plain to see in the top five pieces he picked for the holidays that we’ll be seeing lots more colour. “We usually do a lot of sparkle in the holiday season, which we absolutely have, but there’s an opportunity to think about ‘how do I dress up in a different way?’”
So how? Well, we’ll tell you how!

To turtleneck or not to turtleneck? 5 picks in defence of this jugular-warming winter essential
Middle: The writer, over turtlenecked. View our 5 turtleneck essentials »
Baby, it’s cold outside. And we mean really cold. Not that scenic kind of “snow globe” cold, where everyone goes ice-skating wearing cable knit sweaters and sips gaily on hot chocolate, like in the Old Navy commercials. Rather, it’s that kind of cold where people curse under their breath when they first step outside, and take a cab to otherwise walkable destinations, spiking their hot chocolates on the sly as a means to survive the day.
Sadly, this kind of cold causes many of us to abandon all concepts style. “Oh? You don’t like this oversized puffer?” In that same vein, a fashion-friend tweeted this week that he was “disregarding trends, [and] embracing turtlenecks.”
