Shop the October 2012 Carly Rae Jepsen cover shoot »The first thing to come out of Carly Rae Jepsen’s mouth after she rushes into Vancouver’s Sugar Studios, fresh off a flight from Los Angeles, is an apology. She wanted to arrive at her first fashion magazine cover shoot early, she tells the crew, but her driver had to “circle around the streets a bit” to shake off the paparazzi. The way she explains the schedule hiccup isn’t blasé, showy or even caustic. Jepsen’s honeyed tone conveys a blend of amazement and excitement that can only come from being nouveau famous. Unlike new wealth, freshly minted fame is not about flaunting what you have, it’s about being humble about what you’re worth.
At 26, the Mission, B.C., native has no reason to be modest right now. Ever since Carly Rae Jepsen’s song “Call Me Maybe” was unleashed last year, and fortuitously reintroduced to the Twittersphere by Justin Bieber (Jepsen is signed to Bieber’s U.S. label), the track has taken on a career of its own. It became a number one hit in 37 countries, achieving the kind of global success that has Lady Gaga going, well, gaga over it (Mother Monster tweeted “I’m coming after you” to Jepsen).
As of press time, Jepsen’s flirty anthem is 2012’s longest-reigning chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100. Armed with a lyrical hook that brings to mind the mania of Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Outta My Head,” Jepsen’s synth-laced cut is so omnipresent that nobody from her team calls it by its name. It’s referred to as “the song.” Will she be singing “the song” on The Tonight Show? Does she know Will Ferrell is protesting “the song” right now? Oh, my God, did you see what the hot guys on the baseball team from Harvard did with “the song”?

Just announced! Rihanna will perform at this year’s Victoria’s Secret fashion show
Photography by Mark Davis/Getty Images As if the prospect of watching supermodels like Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and Alessandra Ambrosio model high-fashion lingerie wasn’t enough to get us to tune in to the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, it was just announced that Rihanna is going to be involved.
Today the singer revealed the news on her Facebook page that she will be performing at the annual event, which will be televised on December 4. The spectacle has seen past performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake and the Spice Girls, as well as Rihanna’s friends Kanye West and Jay-Z. Rihanna—who has been quite busy lately, from closing the Paralympics to working on her seventh (!!) album—will sing two songs at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, including her new single “Diamonds.” She will also be joined by two other acts, one of which is some guy named Justin Bieber. No big deal.

TIFF 2012: Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Jello shots for all at last night’s Spring Breakers party

If you never had the chance to participate in the grand North American tradition of spring break (which, FYI, should always be pronounced in full caps and followed with a fist pump cheer) last night’s Spring Breakers party brought quite the facsimile. Vitaminwater transformed Brassaii’s sleek patio into a Daytona Beach-eqsue nightclub, compete with bikini-clad girls frolicking in hot tubs and Jello shots for all. At the Spring Breakers press conference earlier in the day, Selena Gomez warned her fans that the film is R-rated and not for younger audiences—a sign that she was ready to break out of her Disney-approved bubble?

View the performance photos »Another year, another explosive MMVA street party. This year, some of the biggest names in pop (shout out to those Canadian-made!) took to MuchMusic’s famed Toronto headquarters to delight thousands of screaming fans (and millions watching via the tube) with glitter, champagne showers and more. Co-Hosts LMFAO creeped us out in a partially good, partially bad way as this year’s co-hosts, while everyone from Selena Gomez to Kelly Clarkson to Katy Perry (in butterfly wings, no less) took to the stage. MMVA first-timer Carly Rae Jespen ruled the night with her triple award wins for Video of the Year, MuchMusic.com’s Most Watched Video and the fan-driven UR Fave Video of the Year for “Call Me Maybe.” Oh, and Justin Bieber held a baby (his brother, not his spawn) on the red carpet. NBD.

We’re into Selena Gomez’s new purple and blue highlights (and so is Justin Bieber!)
Selena Gomez tweeted a picture this weekend that revealed some electric purple and blue highlights in her hair, and we’ve been itching to see this new style in more detail ever since. Unfortunately, it seems like Justin Bieber is the only one with that luxury—the best shots of her new hair are ones the paparazzi […]

SNP’s word of the day: Holidaze
Illustration by Lewis Mirrett Word: Holidaze
Meaning: The state of being totally confused about whose festivus fete you were supposed to attend at 6, which of your disgusting exes you should still send a “Happy 2012!” e-card to, how much to spend on your step-aunt, whether or not cranberry sauce is “better for you” than gravy, and what constitutes appropriate attire for the one time of year you don’t have a choice about going to church; also, not caring one tiny bit.
Usage: “Happy Holidaze!” — from me to you because I’m so nice

Vote! Best look from the MTV Europe Awards red carpet: Jessie J, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Bar Refaeli
Jessie J, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, and Bar Refaeli at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards. Photography by Getty Images While Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga were the big winners on stage at last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards, we have our top picks for best dressed on the red carpet. Singer Jessie J kept her typically ferocious look going strong with a black and yellow leopard print dress by Dolce & Gabbana—one of many outfits she wore during the night. Selena Gomez also made multiple outfit changes during the awards (9 to be exact!), but with good reason: she was hosting the show. We love her in this white long-sleeved minidress by Marchesa, it certainly pulls the focus away from those pesky rumours surrounding her boyfriend… Moving on! Katy Perry continues her retro-girl vibe with pink pin-up curls (we’re thankful she finally touched up her roots) and a Grease-worthy ensemble from Jeremy Scott’s Spring 2012 collection. The designer was also her date to the show. And model Bar Refaeli wore a custom-designed dress by Replay, which, if you like it, can be described as having an ombre waterfall hem. If you don’t like it, we’re not entirely opposed to the term “mullet dress.”

SNP’s word of the day: Paternity
Illustration by Lewis Mirrett Word: Paternity
Meaning: The legal acknowledgment of the parental relationship between a man and a child.
Usage: “As her boyfriend Justin Bieber began fighting a paternity suit accusing him of fathering a fan’s child out of wedlock, Selena Gomez put aside any upset she could be feeling to attend the “Stars” gala at the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday night.” — the L.A. Times
