Growing up Gomez: Selena Gomez is leaving the kiddie shows behind and moving on to more adult pursuits
By Dennis Hensley
On her new album, When the Sun Goes Down, Selena Gomez sings about self-acceptance (“Who Says”), infatuation (“Whiplash,” which Britney Spears co-wrote) and taming a misbehaving guy (“That’s More Like It,” co-written by Katy Perry). Yet when asked which track reveals the most about her, Gomez ditches the hearts and flowers and goes right for the jugular. “‘Bang Bang Bang’ is probably the most personal,” she says, referring to a snarky kiss-off anthem directed toward an ex, in which she coos put-downs like, “My new boy used to be a model…he looks way better than you” and “When I’m out having fun, you’re gonna be the one that’s broken.”

NYFW diary: Anna! Stella! Diane! Our recap of the Fashion’s Night Out madness!
Singer Estelle and designer Diane von Furstenberg shot by C. Madden While TIFF-goers will be clambering to get a glimpse of Brad Pitt at tonight’s Moneyball premiere, nothing could compare to last night’s flashing of bulbs and girlish screams that echoed throughout NYC for Fashion’s Night Out. I spotted Diane von Furstenberg addressing the crowd at her meatpacking store in Pope-like style, arms waving soothingly at her fans. Later in the night as Anna Wintour made her appearance (a show-dog circle and then, poof, she was gone!) outside Pastis where I was noshing on late-night frites, a parade of fashion followers braved her bodyguards and the cobblestone streets in six-inch stilettos, chasing after their fashion god for just a glimpse. At Stella McCartney‘s downtown store the crowd was smokin’ hot, and I’m not talking about their looks. A broken air conditioner had guests passing the Perrier like it was crack.

From hot-dog aficionados to star-struck lovelies: Join us behind the scenes at the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards
Check out images from last night’s show! »
Vote for your favourite red carpet look! »Year after year, music’s most passionate fans tune in to the MuchMusic Video Awards, the most intimate and out-of-control awards show around where anything and everything goes. The 2011 MMVAs exceeded all expectations, with not one but two performances by priestess of pop Lady Gaga, five outfit changes by co-host Selena Gomez, a surprise tag-team appearance by Canada’s sweethearts Drake and Justin Bieber, and a slew of super-high-energy performances.
Backstage the performers, presenters and VIPs mingled. Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev told us that the first thing she does when she returns to Toronto, her hometown, is eat street meat, with “lots of ketchup.” Presenter Cassie Scerbo of Make It or Break It found herself star struck, but luckily, she had her mom in tow to keep her focused. Performers and Pop Video of the Year winners Down With Webster wandered the lounge in matching mechanics’ jumpsuits embellished with strips of LED lights, crediting the Beastie Boys as their sartorial inspiration.
