The chronicles of John Galliano and the quickest pardon in fashion history
Galliano walking the finale of his spring 2010 show. Photography by Eric Ryan/Getty Images. As is the case with virtually any news story these days, the developments in the John Galliano story⎯the designer being accused of hurling anti-Semitic insults at an (incidentally non-Jewish) couple while drinking at the Paris café, Le Perle⎯can be measured in tweets, quotes and snippets. Given the proliferated speed at which these bits are published and publicized, it’s amazing to witness how quickly the industry’s reaction has gone from appalled to forgiving to looking forward to the designer’s imminent replacement at Dior. Given the industry’s propensity for forgetfulness⎯history has made fools of those who once condemned Coco Chanel for her involvement with the Nazis or Kate Moss for being caught with cocaine⎯we have no doubt that Galliano will be back at the top in no time. All references to the frankly horrifying severity of his remarks will vanish and whereas Chanel’s and Moss’s actions took years to do the same, Galliano’s have almost done so in a matter of 14 days. Meanwhile, as rumours swirl for a possible replacement by Riccardo Tisci, Alber Elbaz and Marc Jacobs, we take a look back at the quickest judgment turnarounds in fashion history.

PFW diary: ‘80s poofs at Lanvin, shoe heaven at Sergio Rossi, Hogan and Roger Vivier
Lanvin finale shot by by Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/Getty Images Sometimes you look and something coming down the runway and just think, “Huh?”
That happened last night at Lanvin when a black and white floral pouf dress appeared at Alber Elbaz’s fall 2011 show. As I watched the booted mini pass by, my next thought was “‘80s Wayne Clark”. Then, I noticed that the outfit was on Freja Beha Erichsen, and since designers tend to put their most important outfits on the better-known models, I wondered: should we to take this look as directional? Will we be seeing more poufy, oversized florals on the spring 2012 runway? Hmmm….

Fashion news: Karl Lagerfeld is “furious” with John Galliano
Photography by Jacopo Raule/Getty Images While the likes of Franca Sozzani and Patricia Fields have rushed to John Galliano‘s defense in the fallout since his Anti-Semitic remarks, Karl Lagerfeld has some harsh words for the disgraced designer. “I’m furious, if you want to know. I’m furious that it could happen, because the question is no longer even whether he really said it. The image has gone around the world. It’s a horrible image for fashion, because they think that every designer and everything in fashion is like this. This is what makes me crazy in that story,” he says. [WWD]

PFW diary: Gaga for Colette, Chanel and of course… Mugler!
Left: Lady Gaga shot by Marc Piasecki/Getty Images. Right: Coco Rocha shot by Eric Ryan/Getty Images. I wish I could tell you that after a transatlantic red-eye and a nap, my first day in Paris started with something noble, like the sculpture exhibit by contemporary British artist Tony Cragg at the Louvre. But, heck, Colette and Chanel have teamed up to create an “ephemeral boutique,” conveniently around the corner from my hotel!

MFW diary: Easy as 123 at Fendi and D&G
Photography by Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images. I was mesmerized by the soundtrack at Fendi yesterday—James Blake’s “Limit to Your Love”—and the collection in turn was just as beautiful as the music. There was a relaxed, easy feeling and a whiff of the English countryside to the felted wool swingy coats, cropped pants, tweedy knit sweat pants, luxe shearlings and furs. Karl Lagerfeld previewed a parade of colour and texture with subtle, sophisticated tones in structured top handle bags and in ribbed wooly tights that contrasted beautifully with block heel mary-janes. Shearlings were turned inside out and trimmed with croc. Melton and felted wool in khakis, ochres, and purples made for some boxy, simple leather trimmed totes and even a ruffle turned up in wool as a detachable jabot on blouses and dresses. Easy, rich and relaxed: just the way I’d like to feel and I’m guessing I’m not the only one.
