Inside the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M launch party in New York: Kanye West, Sarah Jessica Parker and interpretive dancers take over a 9-storey dilapidated building

See the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collection photos»Leave it to Maison Martin Margiela to choose a dilapidated 9-storey building hidden within New York’s financial district to house the launch event for its upcoming collaboration with H&M. To say “event” is to put it simply—performance art installation/dance party/pop-up shop would explain last night a little better. Each floor of 5 Beekman Street was reimagined as some sort of exhibit, with dancers choreographed by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker making art pieces from the aftermath of dancing around on a floor covered in white sand. Elsewhere, installations by Daniel Arsham, Frederique Chauveaux and Noemie Goudal brought the Margiela collaboration pieces to life, by projecting tableaus and hand gestures right on the pieces themselves. Atop the building, a pop-up shop stocked with the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collection was swarmed by the 1,500 guests trying to snag a purchase in advance of the re-edition collection launching in stores on November 15.

It’s official! H&M announces collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela
See the photos »
See the videos »After yesterday’s reported rumours, it was officially announced by H&M today that the brand’s next collaboration would indeed be with art house favourite, Maison Martin Margiela. “We are very happy to present Maison Martin Margiela pieces with H&M, to offer a new interpretation of our vision,” said the team through a press release sent out early this morning. “The democracy of our fashion has always been at the centre of our creativity, and the collaboration with H&M allows us to push this instinct further. We will bring together the contrasting universes of the two houses in ways that will surprise everyone.”
As for details of what the wears will actually look like? The only viable hints, a turtleneck sweater dress for women and a car coat for men, are sketched by a mystery hand in the video below. As for the photos? They show mainly works-in-progress: A hanging muslin, a detailed jacket pattern draft and a…pair of scissors. Get your cleft toe boots at the ready: the bound-to-be-unique men’s and women’s collection will arrive at 230 H&M stores worldwide on November 15, 2012.

Maison Martin Margiela to launch online shopping
Maison Martin Margiela is the latest fashion label to join the world of e-commerce with the launch of their online shop at maisonmartinmargiela.com. The e-boutique, which launches on October 1 and is powered by the fashion retailing site YOOX, will look like a photo negative of the current site and the official font will be that of MS-DOS. (Already the site reminds one of getting a syntax error).
