Preview: Mark Fast’s new lower priced line, Faster
It’s hard to think of a designer right now who’s more white-hot that Mark Fast. So the anticipation for his upcoming diffusion line, Faster, is–safe to say–pretty high. The London-based Canadian’s intricate knit dresses usually run in the thousands of dollars, but the new line will come in at a more accessible price-point. The leggings, […]

Fashion news: Polaroid goes gaga for Gaga, a new prez at Holt Renfrew and Louise Goldin does spiky shoes for Topshop
Matthew Williamson will launch a men’s capsule collection next month. The line, which features tees, cashmere sweaters and silk scarves in the UK designer’s signature prints and vivid colours, will expand to a seasonal collection. [Vogue UK]
Lady Gaga has been named creative director of a specialty line for Polaroid. You may be scratching your head as to why, but just think about the innovation: a camera that adjusts for those wearing an eye patch, or, as our Halifax blogger Nadine suggested, one “that only works when you happen to have forgotten to put on your pants.” [Racked]
Oh, but Jason Wu is also going to be designing cameras, so maybe this is going to turn into a thing. The designer will launch a line of digital point-and-shoots at New York Fashion Week next month. [Styleist]

Fashion news: Gaga Barbie, Coco Rocha does the Grammys, a Rihanna picture book and more
Doll “player” Veik would surely win any contest for “Dress your Barbie as Lady Gaga.” The intricate costumes include Jean Charles de Castelbajac’s Kermit coat and Gaga’s “Paparazzi” and “Bad Romance” outfits–there’s even a DIY for the mini McQueen anteater shoes! [Refinery 29, Veik Flickr]
Coco Rocha will be doing fashion commentary for the home crowd at this year’s Grammy Awards. Rocha will be working the red carpet for ET Canada. No telling yet whether she’s a Joan Rivers or a Ryan Seacrest. [Oh So Coco]

Think fast: Mark Fast’s Toronto meet-up
On Friday morning we trekked out to Plutino Groups gorgeous loft offices to shoot an interview with London’s designer of the moment, Winnipeg native Mark Fast. Christopher Bailey wins big and Karen Elson takes a fall at the British Fashion Awards
The British Fashion Awards were held in London last night. Christopher Bailey and Burberry were honoured twice: Bailey for British Designer of the Year and his label for Best Designer Brand. During his speech, Bailey announced that he would be showing the Prorsum collection in London again for the fall shows in February. While we were crossing our fingers for the Canadian talent on the nominees list–Mark Fast for emerging ready-to-wear talent and Todd Lynn for Best Menswear Designer–those awards went to Peter Pilotto and Kim Jones for Dunhill, respectively. (Don’t feel too bad for Fast–dressing Julia Restoin-Roitfeld on the red carpet was a win of another kind.)

Canadians Mark Fast and Todd Lynn nominated for British Fashion Awards
On December 9th, The British Fashion Awards 2009 will recognize the most influential players in the British fashion industry. Among the nominees are two Canadians: Winnipeg’s Mark Fast is up against Medham Kirchhoff and Peter Pilotto in the emerging ready-to-wear designer category, while Todd Lynn is nominated in the menswear category with Graeme Fidler of […]

Fashion news: Gap founder dies, a curious menswear movement and a raft of designer collabs
Donald G. Fisher, co-founder of the Gap, has died from cancer at the age of 81. Fisher and his wife Doris opened the first store of the retail chain in San Francisco in 1969 following their inability to find jeans that fit properly. [NYTimes]

A new wave of masculinity has arrived: the mantyhose. Selfridges’ tights for men by lingerie brand Unconditional are available in black, beige and charcoal. Menswear director David Walker-Smith calls them “extremely versatile,” going on to say, “we expect men to be wearing them not only as a way to give legs an extra boost of warmth on the chilliest nights, but as a true style statement.” [The Cut] What do you think of the mantyhose movement? Is it the ultimate in Shakespearean-inspired fashion or far too feminine for the modern man?

Dispatches from London: LFW opening weekend
Welcome to London Fashion Week! After religiously checking the weather for days before my departure, this fashionista has been blessed with dry weather and sunshine—shocking for this city.
No major Anna Wintour sightings yet—although she is reported to be here covering the shows for the 25th anniversary of the British Fashion Council. I did spy her at the fall shows last February in New York, though, so I know exactly what the tiny bobbed one looks like in person. I’m keeping my peepers peeled!

Mark Fast’s size scuffle, model flops at Phillip Lim and more
Mark Fast’s show at London Fashion Week is causing a stir for his use of three average-sized models. Two staff members–the stylist and creative designer–quit because of the decision. The real upset here is that it’s even a big deal that these girls are giving the rake-thin beanpoles a run for their money. There’s plenty of room on the runway for everyone, right? [Fashionista] [YouTube]
What do you think of Fast’s decision? Do you want to see more realistic sizes on the runway? Tell us in the comments!

London: Mark Fast, Mary Katrantzou, Fashion East, Vauxhall Fashion Scout Fall 2009
Everywhere I’ve been seeing this intense, starkly angular, raven-haired woman, and wondering, how do I know that face? What magazine does she edit, again? And it’s only on the last day of London Fashion Week that I realize: duh. Erin O’Connor.
