Runway to Real Life: How to wear Miu Miu’s red eyeshadow

At Miu Miu’s Spring 2012 show, the models’ faces were left mostly bare, save for a brazen swipe of red across each eye. Bright and severe, the look was a striking accompaniment to the collection’s fairly neutral palette. If you’re bold enough to try it, red is fabulous! So rather than tone down the colour to something more muted, I decided to use a bright, primary red, but soften it by adding both deeper and lighter colours around the edges.

Nail Corner: We do Effie’s over-the-top caviar manicure from The Hunger Games!
Aside from the excitement of the movie itself, obviously the best thing from The Hunger Games are the crazy manicures that Effie Trinket wears throughout. Unfortunately, only of a few are available to view close up (come on, Lions Gate Films, give fans a full gallery of nail art screen grabs!) but to our delight, one of the more intricate designs was shared by Elizabeth Banks—who of course, played the role of Effie. These Hunger Games nails include the soon-to-be-everywhere trend of caviar manicures—that is, manis with tiny beads that add playful texture—and thus, inspiration for this week’s Nail Corner was born!

A new Nars collection gives Andy Warhol fifteen more minutes of fame (well, that and a Men In Black 3 cameo)

Marilyn Monroe, Turquoise by Andy Warhol This just in: Nars will reportedly launch a cosmetics collection inspired by the artwork of Andy Warhol. While very little news is available at this time, we do have word that the limited edition collection will be colour-focused and developed by François Nars in partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation. Come on, “Campbell’s soup can red” lipstick and “Marilyn Monroe turquoise” eyeshadow! Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until October for the collection to hit counters, but if you’re in need of a Warhol fix now, you’ll be pleased (or likely, horrified) to know he has a cameo in Men In Black 3. (And of course, we have the clip below.)

Rooney! Emma! Angelina! Here are 5 of our favourite beauty moments from the Oscars
Well, our vote for the biggest upset at this year’s Oscars has to be the makeup. From Michelle Williams’ usual routine of a glossed lip and lightly lined eye to Cameron Diaz’s typical pink lipstick, it seemed like almost all the top stars were playing it safe on the red carpet. Neutral shades and sheer nail polish abound! That being said, amongst all the usual suspects it’s still possible to find inspiration—like Rooney Mara’s perfect brows, Angelina Jolie’s flawless red lip, and Emma Stone’s all-over pink shimmer. We’ve rounded up five of our favourite beauty outliers from the red carpet and have behind-the-scenes tips from the makeup artists who created each look.
See the best in red carpet beauty from Rooney, Angelina, J.Lo, Shailene, and Emma! »

Afternoon beauty fix: Stop a last-minute fleck of mascara from ruining an otherwise perfect makeup application
What am I supposed to do when I finish off a perfect eye-makeup application with a mistaken touch from my mascara wand? Black smudges ruin it every time!
It’s so typical that only when you’re halfway through your shadow application do you realize it may have been practical to apply your mascara first to avoid this inevitable flub. And since super lengthening and volumizing formulas have become en vogue, I swear it’s doubly difficult to avoid a dollop of the black wax. -
NYFW backstage beauty: Thakoon’s first-ever bright lip

“The inspiration is Audrey Hepburn,” said makeup artist Diane Kendal backstage at Thakoon. But that didn’t translate into liquid liner, one of the beauty signatures of the screen starlet. “We didn’t want it to be too literal,” explained Kendal. Instead, she did a bold red lip using Nars lipstick in “Heat Wave” and added neon-pink pigment on top for “a bright, luminous quality.” (Later I heard the designer himself doing an interview in which he mentioned it was the first time they’d done a lip at the show.) Cheeks were enhanced with Nars Multiple in “Undress Me,” (launching this fall), while lids were treated to a bit of white shimmer in the form of Nars eyeshadow in “Tibet.”
