The mean streets of New York were looking might friendly/trendy on Day two of New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2014 season. Showgoers were looking comfier than ever having ditched their sky-high platforms for comfort soles and sneakers (our feet are thanking them already!). Grunge was still a major player with heaps of plaid (think sleeves, shirts, and pants), graphic tees, and ripped, worn-in denim on the streets. Some were moving away from the standard street style maximalism to a simpler kind of stylish: black and white.

Street style, New York: It begins! 33 shots from outside the Spring 2014 shows on the first day of NYFW

And we’re back! New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 has officially kicked off, and with it a whole new season of street style photos are en route. While designers like BCBG, Tadashi Shoji, Richard Chai and Toronto-born, New York-based Tanya Taylor were busy yesterday showing us what to expect for the Spring 2014 season, photographer Stefani Yarhi had her eyes on the attendees outside the tents.
The beauty of September is that the weather allows for us to play with both spring and fall trends. While temperatures may be getting cooler, fashion die-hards were definitely keen to get more use out of their spring pieces—mini dresses, graphic tees and gladiator sandals were definitely favourites outside the shows. Sport jersey dresses also made appearances on some of the ladies—perhaps a nod to NYFW’s recent kickoff with the NFL?
However, there was no doubt that fashion enthusiasts were eager to include fall trends to spice up their outfits: Plaid and prints popped everywhere from jackets to skirts to bags. But the two ladies who pulled out hot pink to brighten up the scene were the ones who really caught our eyes.

Marc Jacobs used his forthcoming nail polish collection (!) at the Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 show
Photography courtesy Nars The punk rock-inspired beauty look at the Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 show had many elements worth obsessing over. Models all wore cropped, shaggy wigs which were done as homage to Joan Jett (remember when Kristen Stewart had the same hair?), covered in so much hairspray that they looked authentically rock show sweaty. The makeup—which cited Marianne Faithful as muse—was equally gritty, with heavily-lined eyes that had “cool girl” style. “The eye is smoky, but round and defined and we created really matte, perfect skin,” explained lead makeup artist François Nars of the look.
However, it was the nails at Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 (it always comes back to the nails, doesn’t it?) that had everyone excited.

The sun finally showed itself for our final batch of street style from New York Fashion Week, allowing the kaleidoscopic effect created outside Fall 2013 to take hold. Be gone, grey skies!Swedish blogger Elin Kling embraced the cheery lighting with a long and lean white blazer, classic Ray-Ban wayfarers and slim jeans. Giovanna Battaglia brightened her day by pairing unexpected plum purple with brown fur. Anna Wintour debuted what is sure to be her new favourite Prada coat and it even seemed sunny and warm enough for Derek Blasberg to break out his adorable bike, which he rode to fashion week with nothing but a denim jacket to keep him warm. Shine bright like a diamond, y’all! That’s a wrap for New York Fashion Week Fall 2013 street style.

At the Calvin Klein Fall 2013 show yesterday afternoon, Jessica Chastain and Olivia Wilde were seated front row to witness the impeccable tailoring of Francisco Costa’s latest collection first hand. In keeping with the sophisticated Calvin Klein runway looks, both Chastain and Wilde looked gorgeous in dresses designed by Costa for Calvin Klein.
Wilde looked classy and refined in a stunning netted blue cocktail dress with a small black belt to define her waist. The former star of The O.C. complemented the look with a chic black clutch and a simple ponytail. This was the only New York Fashion Week show Wilde attended this week, so she definitely pulled out all the stops.

On the heels of his recent capsule collection with Target, Prabal Gurung is quickly becoming known as a designer who embraces collaborations. His latest –and most prolific—venture comes in the form of nail polish, specifically with Sally Hansen. For a sixth consecutive season, Gurung has worked with Sally Hansen to create new nail polish shades to be used on the runway—and then later sold at retail.
Three new shades were used this week for the Prabal Gurung Fall 2013 presentation. The runway show, which had a strong military feel, was complemented with nail art that reflected the dark colour palette of the collection. The new Sally Hansen colours include “Loden Green” (olive), “Night Watch” (navy), and “Coat of Arms” (gold). For the runway show, manicurist Jin Soon Choi used the three new shades together by layering them and creating a sharp triangle shape that extended from the moon, meant to reflect the unique style of Prabal Gurung.
