New York Fashion Week: Embellishment reigns supreme at Rodarte, Narciso Rodriguez, Jenny Packham and Tory Burch for Fall 2013
See our favourite detail shots from Rodarte Fall 2013 »
New York Fashion Week is full of sparkling moments, and any magpie worth her shiny nest knows how to spot them. Take Tory Burch’s Fall 2013 show, held in one of the opulent salons at The Pierre Hotel. Crystal chandeliers, gilded sconces and the plushest of carpets made for a very luxe start to the day. Over at J. Crew, Julianne Moore, looking oh-so-radiant sans makeup and sporting an effortlessly cool topknot, seemed to leave a trail of stardust as she glided through the room. The star power continued over at Dennis Basso’s 30th anniversary show with a double dose of Joan (Rivers and Collins). And judging by the rest of the well-heeled attendees, the 3F’s–furs, fine jewels and facelifts–were out in full force to celebrate this luxury brand’s milestone. At Rodarte, swirls of kaleidoscopic colour updated the go-to summer staple–the maxi dress–but it was the illuminated set, inspired by the Santa Cruz boardwalk, where the Mulleavy sisters grew up, that shone like a beacon when the lights went down. Want to turn up the flash factor in your closet? Fall 2013’s runway collections are filled with glittering looks and decorative details. Here are 5 fresh ways to wear embellishment:

Chanel’s hula hoop bag! Anna Dello Russo in head-to-toe Prada! A post-Rodarte psychedelic ombré! Boy, are there ever some treasures to behold in today’s batch of street style photos out of New York Fashion Week. All that realness we talked about on Friday seems to have poof! melted with the snow—fashion’s show ponies are truly working for their place in the Fall 2013 spotlight.
While capturing the latest from street style regulars Susie Bubble, Miroslava Duma, Man Repeller Leandra Medine and Shala Monroque ducking in and out of It ticket shows including Rodarte, Narciso Rodriguez and Kate Middleton-favourite Jenny Packham, a few old favourites made their return to our the Fall 2013 radar. Case in point: the newly blond Ulyana Sergeenko, who with regal walker in tow, looked every bit as poster princess for Moscow’s matryoshka doll society as ever. Oh, to be a pore on that skin.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2013 backstage beauty: Brushed out curls and cherry mouths at Marc by Marc Jacobs

Makeup inspiration at Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2013:
“Marc [Jacobs] wanted to do something very sophisticated and chic. There’s quite demented hair going on, so what I’m doing is very classical. Everyone has their little reference: Someone said it looks like a [Michael] Fassbender woman, someone else said a Guy Bourdin [photograph], but I was thinking more along the lines of Fanny Ardant, the French actress.” – Dick Page, Shiseido artistic directorGet the look:
On the eyes, Page used two cream shadows. He blended a shimmery taupe from the lower lash line up to the crease and brushed it along the lower lash line. He applied black shadow to the upper part of the lid, diffusing the colour. He also used some black mascara and did “a light groom.” And just before the models hit the runway, Page patted one of his favourite products—Shiseido Benefiance Full Correction Lip Treatment—on lids for a glossy finish. To achieve the “very glossy, wet-looking lip” Page mixed two Shiseido Lacquer Rouge shades: “Sanguine” and “Drama.” -
Street Style, New York: 33 photos featuring Doutzen Kroes, Carine Roitfeld, Michelle Harper and some new faces to watch outside the Fall 2013 shows

Fashion’s fixations were back for another day of street style action outside Fall 2013’s edition New York Fashion Week, and while the usual suspects were out in full force to see big name collections including 3.1 Phillip Lim, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan, there are quite a few new darlings that are catching our eye.
Case in point: Our new favourite gal, Shine by Three blogger Margaret Zhang who looked ripe for the ‘80s-era Wall Street picking in grey suited layers. Obviously a fan of plaid, we photographed her wearing the same pattern in Friday’s street style batch alongside a few more layers of grungy goodness. Watch that face. Another new beauty, Natasha Goldenberg, whose matador-meets-Frida Kahlo-meets-Dries Van Noten look had us all abuzz. Save for the cell phone, she looks like a snapshot of another time we’d really like travel to.

Coco Rocha vs. Shay Mitchell: Who wore brights best at the Diane Von Furstenberg show?

See the Diane Von Furstenberg looks up up-close »
Forget the runway, everyone knows there’s a whole other fashion show going down on its sidelines. At Diane Von Furstenberg’s Fall 2013 show during New York Fashion Week, we spotted two pretty little Canucks sporting two pretty little pairs of pants in dueling Valentine’s Day hues.
Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell wore DVF’s bright pink Naples tuxedo pant and paired it with very classic pieces allowing that power piece to shine: a relaxed black blazer, black blouse and black Christian Louboutin pumps. Mitchell complemented the pant with a pink pout perfectly highlighting the bright shade.

Makeup inspiration at 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2013:
“She’s a sophisticated girl. She spends time in the mirror in the morning. She has an edge, she could live uptown and have a downtown boyfriend, or at nighttime be in a rock band.” – Francelle Daly, Nars lead makeup artist.Get the look:
Daly applied Nars Luminous Moisture Cream and a illuminating foundation for a dewy effect. She also used a peachy highlighter (Nars highlighting blush in “Miss Liberty”) on cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. “It’s a flawless complexion, but it’s effortless.” Daly brushed “Yamal,” a camel shadow, on lids, defined brows with a pencil and curled top and bottom lashes with a clear mascara. On lips she used Nars lip liner pencil in “Kenya,” a brownish red shade, to trace and fill in the mouth. Then she brushed “Mambo” eyeliner pencil on top to give it “depth and richness.”

See our top 5 colours for New York Fashion Week Fall 2013 » Winter whiteouts wreaked havoc on highways (and hair) over the last couple of days but they didn’t blow onto the runways at New York Fashion Week Fall 2013. From the neon green topper I spied in the crowd at Diane Von Furstenberg […]

Street Style, New York: 56 photos featuring Man Repeller, Miroslava Duma, ASAP Rocky, Taylor Tomasi Hill and more outside Fall 2013 fashion week

Storm? What storm? If these street style photos from the last few days at New York Fashion week were any indication, Snowmageddon was but a blip on the Fall 2013 show season radar. Despite a record-breaking snowfall (ahem, have you seen the Long Island Expressway?), the fashion flock was rearing to go.
Whereas fur is typically the go to for cold weather fashion weeks (and was worn well by Joanna Hillman and Shala Monroque), it seemed there was a new motto this weekend: tailoring. Peacoats, riding coats, double-breasted wool coats and raincoats were largely favoured this weekend, with everyone from Miroslava Duma to Taylor Tomasi Hill diving in. Outside Friday and Saturday’s shows, Man Repeller Leandra Medine showcased two very different layered looks—a way oversized peacoat layered over jeans, a baggy blue jean button down and heeled white loafers on Friday, and a worn out motorcycle jacket overtop a loose flannel shirt, light boyfriend jeans and black suede booties on Saturday—both worn avec toques with enviable flops.

Street Style, New York: 17 photos of fur, plaid and coat-over-coat layers outside Fall 2013 fashion week
Photography by Stefania Yarhi See our street style photos from outside New York Fashion Week »
It’s on! The first day of New York Fashion Week already under our belts and we’re slowly but surely getting back into the street style spin. Despite the snow, the fashion flock has returned to mount Lincoln (Center) to show off between shows that yesterday included BCBG, Richard Chai Love, Creatures of the Wind and homegirl Tanya Taylor. It’s pretty frigid out, and so far it looks like people are keeping it real (save for the bare legged Lauren Santo Domingo at last night’s Dannijo presentation party). Furs, heavy plaids and coat-over-coat layers were all favourites for practical cold weather dressing within these first 17 selects. The 1990s grunge trend seems a perfect match for the weather as well, with many of these ladies sporting button down plaid shirts tied at the waist and worn over shorts layers with toques and bowler hats à la Bridget Fonda in Singles. Oh yes. Stay tuned for our next batch of photos on Monday and enjoy these grungy nuggets in the meantime.

With designers opting for pale, neutral polishes, simple manicures and (possibly, worst of all) French tips on the Spring 2013 runways, nail art fanatics had to look elsewhere for inspiration. However, we’re just a few shows into the Fall 2013 collections and things are looking up: there are already some great nail art designs coming out of New York Fashion Week.
